SFM Sonic Tutorial: P1- Basics and Posing

- I've decided to make a Tutorial series for those who want to make Sonic animations in the SFM. This tutorial series will only cover the Basic SFM controls, and the bare basics of animation and lighting. Along with some exporting tips that I use.
In this part, we'll be covering a couple basics for SFM, including the Requirements to run it. Now I didn't explain this all too well in the video, but it's recommended that you have these Specs to run SFM on your PC/Laptop.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
OS: Windows 7 / Vista (Windows 7 64 bit suggested)
Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
Memory: 2GB (4 GB suggested)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 200 series card or better, or AMD Radeon 3000 series or better (NVIDIA GeForce 400 series or AMD Radeon 5000 series preferred)
Now although those are the minimum requirements, you CAN technically run the SFM on an older computer so long as it has a Dedicated Graphics Card (No Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA Graphics Chips, they'll lag like hell), and a good amount of Memory, as well as at least a Dual Core Proccessor. It won't run smoothly, but it'll run.
The Sonic Models Pack I use:

Hey all! Wanna thank you for the constant feedback on this old video! I'm glad I've been able to help you all out in some way or another with 3D animation!
Where did you get all the characters? You said you would link the all the characters as a package, but I think you might have forgotten, please send me the link if possible. Thanks in advance c:
Absolutely!
steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=281311378
All the models in that link are the ones I use :D
That reply was so fast, dude you're awesome thanks a bunch! Cheers C:
where did you find that tails model I kinda need it
Yo thank you for making that video I've been wondering how to open up Tail's eyelids without making him look like a crackhead lol 😂
What a legend, still responding and haerting comments, an idol, new subscriber!
Creating Sonic SFMs Or Not, This Is Probably The Best Guide Out There For The Time Being, Because It Tells You Everything, And I Can Run SFM Smooth As F#*@ So I'm Good! Thanks For Making This, Looking To Become An SFM Animator And This Has Taught Me All The Basics And A Lot Of Extras! Thnx!
Thanks for making this. I was making a game for RAGE that needed SFM cutscenes, and this tutorial was invaluable for ensuring... well, that Sonic didn't have his eyes closed the entire time. Thanks again!
Wow, your tutorials are the best! I've been looking for Sonic-centered SFM tutorials and yours was the perfect find :). Very cool, funny and easy to follow! I used this to experiment with the Rouge and Tails models.
I know you will not read this comment but thank you for making this video because this is helping me make a really big project so I appreciate it, so thank you so much
What I love most about this guy is that if there is a problem, he always gives a counter method so we do it without worry! You've earned a SUB from me!!!
i'm new to SFM , i searched normal SFM tutorials and all of them just mumbling non-sense , while your tutorials - and exactly sonic is what i wanted - are Great , easy and straight to point , you also explain the shortcuts which is an important step for a newbie , now I was able to pose and do emotions and face movement for the eyes , head , trunk , spine .......etc.
i can't thank you enough for your help , i'll try to follow up with the other parts of the tutorial as well
Thanks man, this was actually easier for me to understand than the official ones :D
Keep doing what you're doing cuz it works!
Thank you so much for this! I'm just starting out on SFM and this has been SO helpful.
Thank you for this video, I'm trying to learn SFM in general and as you said, a lot of videos assume that you just know the basics. Very helpful!
Thank you so much! This helped A LOT!
Thank you! I've always wanted to learn how to make visual stories using my childhood characters. This means so much to me!
good! i am happy because i need it to do my own SFM! Thanks!
Best of luck!
Dude your a legend thank you for making this
I've been wanting to get into sfm for years now and I'm looking up as many tutorials as I can find.
one of the best tutorials so far!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for teaching me about sfm
This is the best tutorial out there! Thank you!
Not a problem! I hope you stick with the channel pal!
All I can say is.....Thank you very much for this Sonic Character Tutorial. I am trying to practice with SFM because I always wanted to animate with Sonic!! With your video and help I thank you very much!!!
thank you
Awesome! I'm new to SFM, so This'll be helpful.
11:44 How'd you get the purple dots to appear? They're not appearing on my screen.
This really helps! Thank You! I'm using your technique for an SFM of Silver The Hedgehog! This is the only tutorial on CZcams that is in English where as all the others are in Spanish or something.
That's really helpful. Thanks dude.
jediwarriormike No problem! Thanks for the support!
Thanks for making this!
Not a problem! I hope you stick with the channel and the new stuff that's to come! Appreciate the support as always!
I actually made this after watching part 1. How is it for a first model? His right hand is screwed up, so try to ignore that, lol. jdniscool.deviantart.com/art/SFM-Pissed-Off-Prower-740941899
Uh question- how do you get the lighting to look like yours? BTW this is the best tutorial yet! I just started SFM today : D
11:44 How to interact the dots? It looks easier to know what bone and easier to see.
Thanks man you earned a subscriber 👌 (From 2021)
great posing vid!! did you make an animation tutorial with controls, like taking the pic after pic to create movement
Nice work!
+Yellowsky Tyleese Thank you so much!
+aRRZee Gaming My pleasure. Hope you can show more, dude!(≧∇≦)
+aRRZee Gaming I am also interested in these three dimensional models and SFM film making. You provide me a way to know about it. BTW, I'm looking forward to seeing more film works. Just keep doing!
I can never find any good enough tutorials for animating.
I'm using this video for Shulk, and it's really effective so far. lmao
(And also Lucas model)
I have a quick question about using models: What kind of format is used for Source Filmaker?
good work
+ABDO GAMES Thank you!
do sonic plz
Oh uh, sure! Though honestly saying, the animation tips shown in the video, pretty much apply to all of the Sonic models.
ok but do more
Good work there! Correct me if I'm wrong but the framerate you should choose can be different depending on what region you live. What I mean is that in America the usual framerate is 30 FPS while in in Europe is 24 FPS so I guess that the framerate we choose will depend on the region you live in right?
+Flyer Fox The framerate can be anything you'd like it to be. Though typically, 60FPS just looks smoother.
Yeah that's the framerate that games use normally.
Wow, no dislike
Nice, 😎
ur aewsome
Thank you!
ur welcome by the way its true u r awesome!!!
How do you import models from steam sfm workshop and does the subscribe button mean you have to pay for the model ?
Im getting a new pc so I can animate. Is RX 560 graphic card good for SFM?
are you using the ik rig from the workshop?
how do you get off the rotate thing? when I click away from it, its still there...
how can center that orange cercle while using a laptop ?
My camera view just goes black when I click and hold and do nothing with my mouse, any suggestions to fix this?
EDIT: I found out that in the top tab: 'Windows > Engine Window > Autohide Engine Window', was for some reason toggled on.
Arrzee, when I load a model it has a white outline and it doesn't look as goo and realistic as when you loaded it. Is it a bug or something?
what is a controll bot because i cant get the dots on him
how do you drag the sliders?
plz tell me how i can unlink stuff like sildors hat or bomb and delete him if you tell me
I am very appreciative you for help
The reason it looks weird when you zoom in is it messes with you field of view on your camera
I tried importing Classic Sonic the same way you imported Tails. He is invisible. Why is this?
Bluecore I'm not exactly sure really....
I finally got it to work. I just had to close and open the program twice.
If you did putting Models, did you use Download Install Models or You Souce Filmmaker is already after Install Complete?
+CrossWiiU7 Almost all models on my SFM are downloaded from the Steam Workshop.
+aRRZee Gaming Ok thank you. Is click with Subscribe Workshop.
i didnt know what he said on 6:43 can someone help plese and i hold ctrl and it didnt work
How to download source filmmaker
Did i fight you on sonic forces mobile app?
help me please:
When I press E in the root transform or something else, which key should I press to return to move him around?
and can you make a tutorial on how to make the running, please?
Every time I move the right arm it moves the left
what did you write to change the size of his eyes?
r_eyesize 0-5 for bigger eyes, 0-(-5) for smaller eyes, leads to some seriously funny effects!
So is SFM animation work for any laptop or no just wondering
Yes, it works if you have a powerful enough laptop.
Woah legit i just notice no one disliked this video xD
***** lol
LEMME DO BUT I STILL LIKE THE VID

@@SaviorOfEdge yup
@@SpinDash225 indeed... I'm gonna beat the shit outta that person xD (jk)
I installed the sonic pack from steam workshop. I when I type Sonic it just says error
If you still have SFM open when you installed it, be sure to refresh the model loading screen with Rescan button. If that still doesn't work, restart SFM. It should prompt you to download the SOnic pack
test is a tutorial. right?
link to models?
But what if my program does not have a Tails model in it?
+Gary Lu Productions You download them from the SteamWorkshop.

SFM maps available on the workshop are free, yes.

Bluecore It's sad I know :(
classic sonic has only 1 eye idunno why
Sonic characters wont come up for me
Sorry but how do you move your self in sfm
Hold left mouse in the camera and use wasd
how did you make the bones purple so that its able to move?
+Miningfrog Hit f4, or f3 to switch into the graph, and motion editor!
i did but i cant move the bones around, whenever i try to click on one of the bones they become invisible...
+Miningfrog Odd...do you have somewhere I can contact you at to help you out more?
on twitter: twitter.com/MiningFrog
or by email: jonathanpokemon@icloud.com
im using a modern sonic model if that helps
When ever I load in tails I don’t see him. Someone please help!
It works now :)
I can't seem to move Sonic's arms. I need help.
What issue are you having exactly?
@@VellvetFoxie Okay so I was using Apoc Hedgie's Shadow Model. And for some reason, the software is not letting me move his arms correctly. I have the certain parts unlocked though.
Hm. Are you using the rigs? Or are you just moving each bone independently?
@@VellvetFoxie I'm using the rigs
@@MikeAndRevioAdventures Alright then, make sure you're using the "rig_hand" bone to move the models arms. Moving the bone up, down, left, or right will move it in that direction while using the rotate tool will rotate the hand. It may be a bit of an odd way to do it at first, but it's muuuuch easier to move limbs this way than individually moving each limb. If you need any more help, I'd be happy to assist! Just shoot me a message if you have a Discord by adding me:

Make sure you're logged into Steam.
god i hate! the posing mechanics and or features! in SFM is all weird i wish it was more like blender quick and simple! where you can just switch to pose mode and controls for posing is easy, fun and super fast! on top of that! why the fuck! do we have to have steam running in the background for!? what is that suppose to do?! that right there is the worst of it! other than the file size of 16gigs. i sometimes wounder if i regret downloading this.
I only did it, so that i can improve on my animation skills and to have fun while doing this which makes almost no sense when i could just do it all in blender. but this already has all the things ready for animating like models, backgrounds, props, sound, music etc. that's why i'm giving it a 2nd chance! last time i gave up just because of the controls alone and also the amount of space it took! i found out that after downloading some assets it came down to over 60+GigaBytes that right there was a mayor turn off! since i'm a super download freak! but this i should be a bit more passion because i need to be and i need it to for improvement.
+TOONYMAN STUDIOS Don't give up, keep trying man.
where the link to the model packs? you only put the one for SFM.
where the link to the model packs? you only put the one for SFM.
+TOONYMAN STUDIOS the models you can easily find by searching in Sonic in the SFM workshop.
