  • In this video we will be looking into one of my favorite Aquarium Plants Cryptocoryne Usteriana. I had a few years with this one in the past, and it took a long time to find some replacement!

Super cool plant. I love crypts because they grow in my cold water tanks and tropical tanks. Great content on preservation and how to be mindful of our plant sourcing.

I had C. usteriana a while ago from a fellow hobbyist, It's a lovely big beatiful Crypt. My experience with it is that in about a year it took over an entire 20 long. I went from 3 mature plants to something like 10 or 15 over that year. It also threw up spathes for me on a couple occasions. The person I got it from recommended I keep it in a pot to control the runners and honestly I don't disagree.

So I just got this plant. They’re only 3 inches tall and already sending out runners! How is that even possible?! My undulatus reds took over a year to mature and then began to send out runners. 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • @bonwrentaylor2743

Great & informative video, thanks. Is it possible for this plant to go through cycles of healthy growth, followed by melting off again, for several months before the plant eventually settles and grows healthily. Mine has been going through these cycles for about 4 months now and it's becoming a bit frustrating. According to my test results the aquarium environment has remained stable with no fluctuations and all other crypts (Crispatula, Becketti) are doing well. Lighting is medium strength Arcadia LED, temp 79 fahrenheit, Ph 7, Nitrates 20ppm, and weekly dose of complete fertiliser following 30% water change. There's no CO2 injection and substrate is plain gravel that isn't vacuumed around the base of the rooted plants. I'd have thought my Usteriana would have fully acclimatised to my tank after 3-4 months. Do you think it's still adapting/settling in .....?

So what is mine potentially if it doesn't get much beyond 24"?
I started from a tissue culture, it claimed to be usteriana and maybe the leaf portion itself caps out around 24" but the stem is another 12"+ after 18 months, but otherwise it looks exactly like yours with the red bottoms. I sell GIANT bags of it at my local aquatic plant association. Should I just "trim" it like the people shipping it out and let it grow back? I actually find it is spreading okay, I've got extras just sitting in other tanks because there's only so many people with huge tanks and ponds in my local club. I've actually never seen much algae on it and the light in the tank is rather high... though some other plants definitely have developed algae in there at times.

    • @CorvusOscen

You likely are just growing it perfectly! There are a few variants within tbt species, that are larger and smaller. Mainly accomplished through selection processing.
