    Planned retreat can be done passively too. For example, after Hurricane Sandy, homeowners on some of the flooded barrier islands off of New Jersey were offered government buyouts for their wrecked houses. The smart ones took the money and rebuilt inland. Changes to zoning law, tax law, city services and insurance regulations can strongly encourage people to move themselves out of harm's way.

    Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor. Why import fossil fuels when wind and solar energy can be produced locally and solar energy can power electric vehicles. We need solutions not just sympathy.

    • @Rnankn
      @Rnankn Před rokem +2

      Yes, absolutely, in the aggregate. But the resources to support a population are usually concentrated with a minority, so without redistribution someone struggling with survival will never sacrifice when other live in abundance. That is true on a global level, since the biosphere does not stop at national borders. And it isn’t just having enough resources. Extraction, production, consumption and disposal have wider impacts on everyone, while resource use often depletes finite stocks that was a shared endowment. As I see it the larger the population and greater the speed and intensity of energy and resource use, the more constrained the species is as a whole. Under current conditions, there are two options. Either complete planetary equality around consumption levels of developing countries with central planning to ensure minimum standards are met, and maximum impact is not exceeded. Here a high quality of life could be met through essential public services in a paradigm of private ‘sufficiency’ and public luxury. Or local agrarian economies similar to the 17th century, but hopefully with internet and some essential medical capabilities. Either way, the dream of green capitalism is simply not viable for at least another century or two when population levels come down to within planetary boundaries.

    If you think it only affects poorer nations, think again! Natural disasters don't pick their locations. I am experiencing this in a first world country! I live in Germany and already lost months of sleep (accumulated in the last 6 years) due to hotter than "usual" summers. Modern apartments are NOT being built with passive house certification, nor basic geothermal cooling. The horrendous housing market isn't making it easier either. It's nearly impossible to find a decent place to live in, let alone ideal place and design. Old buildings are constantly being renovated, but renovation doesn't solve their fundamental design intentions, which were to survive through winters, not summers.

    Errr.. Communities? I'd talk about moving whole countries. Like Nauru, Bangladesh and so on. We are talking about moving billions, not millions of people in this century. But that af course means that we want to keep them alive. First shots against climate refugees has been shot already in borders like mediterraneian and US south. We are rather building walls (USA, India, Hungary, Finland, ...) or blocking refugees with any means possible, like EU did with Syrian refugees with agreeing Turkey to keep them. The recent refugee crisis was too hard to handle for EU, but that was a minor one when you start to compare it with the ones that are coming because of the climate and ecological crisis.
    But also keep in mind that even moving to other locations won't always help. Whole mediterraneian is on fire and under heat/drought/floods. Moving from Africa to southern EU won't help much. Even in not that hard hit Scandinavia food crop has vained many years in a row.
    We should really start planning how to manage incoming population in masses. What happens to a country that currently has 10 million people and there is 50 million people that wants to move there? Even if there is enough land to move, it will change the whole country to something else. And building infrastructure for them, will make huge emissions and environmental impacts that will make things even worse. And ofc economy is altered too. We have already huge opposition that is called rightwing racists, that often are against migration and against scientific facts including manmade climate change. And their numbers will rise when situation worsens.
    I bet that mass migration that is coming will cause wars. It already has.
    We are currently at 1,5C (august, 2023). Temporarily, but soon permanently. Climate chaos effects are rising all across the globe.

    Just so that everyone is absolutely clear here; climate is long-term shifts, and weather is what is going on outside right now. With that out of the way, what the world is going through this year, how winter has all but just skipped us; that is NOT climate change. That is weather. The HungaTonga - Hunga A'apai volcano reupted in January, last year. It was mostly under water, and it had the opposite effect on our atmosphere than what above ground volcanos have. So instead of cooling our atmosphere down, it warmed it up. The moisture and other gases it ejected into our atmosphere, giving a very strong greenhouse effect; allowing light in, but acting as a mirror across the blackness of space. And it is classified as weather because this is not a long-term phenomenon, as it will dissipate over the course of the next year or two. And then we will get back to our regularly scheduled climate change discussion. Sadly, we have to pretty much bury the climate change debate for a bit. We cannot honstly point to what is going on right now and keep brandishing climate change as the cuase, and holding a debate right now about it is equally as useless. All we have is "Yes, but what about after the effects of Hunga Tonga - Hunga A'pai are over?!" And that is not going to work in a debate with people who are already refusing take into account existing evidence.
    And as to migrants? Well, take them in, give them a place to stay, and open up opportunities for them to find a new path. And as to those who can't? Well, all I have to say is, we are a part of nature, we are merely animals, and when push comes to shove we got to let nature take care of the weak ones.
    Why bother wasting precious resources trying to help those who *_WILL NOT_* help themselves(even after being educated and informed)?
    WILL NOT

    Incredible how the Economist can kick off this piece with images from refugee camps that have little to nothing to do with climate change. The majority of poor Africans who are being ravaged by climate change simply cannot afford to leave. Pastoralist communities in the Horn lose virtually all their assets (livestock) during times like now when major droughts strike (sadly, a more frequent occurence now). Those fleeing such places and other areas like north west Africa, really aren’t predominantly ‘climate migrants’ but persecuted people fleeing war, terror, and authoritarian power structures. My bet is we’ll see a whole lot of people from the rich world - California, the Gulf, parts of Europe, and rich coastal cities - really the kind of people with the means and access to migrate - make up the majority of climate migrants. Another stereotype we seriously need to move away from is that Africa cannot possibly be a place of refuge, too

So unless the immigrants you know came from a place like Tangiers Island, I wouldn't expect them to be fleeing climate change right now. But, by around 2050-2070, I'd expect a lot more people to be fleeing climate change, and that's something we have to plan for.

I have spoken to many immigrants to the US and they are getting prepaid credit cards and other government benefits to ENCOURAGE the migration.
