Coover wrote my all-time favourite book, The Universal Baseball Association, so I will always check out anything he does. I don't know that I would have heard about this had it not been for your channel, so thanks!

It's a pleasure to spread the word about this book and about isolarii because--you're right--not many are going to know of it. This doesn't have the deep-pocket marketing dollars behind it. So I'll do what I can!

Coover & Spiegelman: a match made in heaven.
I love both but I didn't know about this joint effort.
Once again, thanks for enriching my bookcase and impoverishing my bank account.

Very cool! Can't wait to read this after listening to your thoughts. Had to subscribe to their releases as well since I love the idea + execution of the project based on what I'm seeing. Grateful for the introduction, thanks!

So glad to hear it! It's a really cool concept, indeed, and they already have some gems (like this one)!

I honestly can't believe that Art Spiegelman is involved with your upcoming book - that's such fantastic news for you. He's not one of my personal favourites, but that man arguably did more than anyone else to show that comics are a medium capable of the highest artistic achievements, through his work as the editor of Arcade and RAW. I'm pretty hyped to see how your book turns out now.

      @@geronimo8159 Long comment inbound:
The one that I always recommend to the western canon fans is Grant Morrison's comic The Invisibles, which in my opinion is the greatest comic ever made, and probably the only example you'll ever find of a comic book version of maximalism a la Pynchon, Gaddis, DFW, etc.
A not-so-close second favourite would be Alan Moore's comic From Hell, which masquerades as a horror comic about Jack the Ripper, but is actually a very meticulously detailed account of Whitechapel in the 1890s, and deals with the author trying to make sense out of hundreds of overlapping theories, from the occult to the geographical to the conspiratorial.
Some others that I would consider my favourites are, in no particular order:
Grant Morrison - The Doom Patrol, Animal Man, Flex Mentallo, The Filth, and his non-fiction prose work Supergods, which is a holistic interpretation of the superhero genre.
Alan Moore - Watchmen, Marvelman (now published as Miracleman), The Saga of the Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta.
Chris Ware - Building Stories, Jimmy Corrigan, Rusty Brown.
Dave Sim - Cerebus (which, altogether, is something like >6000 pages long), The Strange Death of Alex Raymond.
The Hernandez Brothers - Love & Rockets (the first three volumes make up the acclaimed 'Locas' storyline, the next three make up the acclaimed 'Palomar' storyline - all of the subsequent volumes are pretty much just supplemental).
Joe Sacco - Palestine, Safe Area Gorazde.
      Richard McGuire - Here.
Lynd Ward - Vertigo (but also everything else he did).
      Carla Speed McNeil - Finder.
Stephen Murphy - The Puma Blues.
      Dave McKean - Cages.
Tillie Walden - Basically everything she's made.
      Barry Windsor-Smith - Monsters.
I would say that most, if not all, of the above works could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best literary fiction that came out alongside of them, and many would easily surpass those same literary works in terms of quality for me.

Thanks for pointing me towards isolarii. In the market of "subscription boxes" it's hard to find something unique and worthwhile.

So cool that you’re working on a project with Art Spiegelman. Maus is a great graphic novel. I’d recommend you check out Second Generation by Michel Kichka.

To be a little more specific: he and I are both contributing to the same book. I still haven't even met him...yet! Maus and Maus II are the only other books of his I've read, but they are great indeed. Thanks for the Kichka rec!

That’s a very tiny book! I really like the writing/art collaboration. It reminds me of Japanese visual novels. I always thought the west should do more things like visual novels.

Hey Chris, just wondering what do you do with the notes you write in your books? do you transfer them into a commonplace book? I know some authors like Robert Greene transfer their notes onto notecards and review them regularly.

    • @LeafbyLeaf
      @LeafbyLeaf  Před 2 lety +1

Hey there! I don't really have a set system in this regard. I do write in my books and in a commonplace book, but I can't recall ever doing and transferring between the two. I actually keep several commonplace books: fiction, philosophy, theology, and lit crit. I do regularly flip through my commonplace books though. Actually--yeah--now that I think about it, I technically copy over stuff I mark in my books into the commonplace books (reading books is how material makes it into the commonplace books to begin with!). But I definitely don't transfer all my intra-book notes to the cp books.
