How to sound like David Gilmour on a budget - Boss SD-1

  • In this video we'll examine the classic Boss SD-1. Is it capable of replicating David Gilmour's Tube Driver tones?
    The SD-1 came out of the OD-1 - one of the first ever compact overdrive pedals. Like the Tube Screamer, it has a noticeable mids boost but a tad more low end and gain.
    The SD-1, like the Tube Screamer, needs a bit of hair from the amp otherwise it tends to sounds thin and dull. I've set the Laney Lionheart up for just a tiny amount of gain - not much but enough for the tubes to add a bit of compression.
    Is the SD-1 capable of replicating David Gilmour's Tube Driver tones? Well, you tell me but for a fraction of the price of the Tube Drive and the fact that just about any guitar store carries these, the SD-1 offer a very affordable and great sounding alternative.
    I've added a bit of delay with a TC Electronic Flashback set up with 440ms and 7 repeats. At the end of the clip, I've added a Boss CE-2 chorus for a bit of that mid 90s flavour.
    As always, let me know what you think in the comment field below.

    Guitar - Fender Stratocaster, with D Allen Voodoo 69 neck and middle pickups and Seymour Duncan SSL5 bridge pickup.
    Amp - Laney Lionheart L20H, Laney LT212 cabinet with Celestion V30 speakers
    Mic - Sennheiser e906

    My SD-1 and OD-2 sat in the closet for many years. I used to be tempted by every new specialty/ boutique overdrive on the market until I realized it all really comes down to two things, gain stacking and EQ. If you have two basic overdrives, each with at least a treble and bass control rather than just a tone knob, then you can get from edge of breakup all the way to super compressed fuzz tones. Add any old graphic EQ pedal, one in front of and one behind those two overdrives and you can theoretically sculpt almost any overdrive tone you desire. My experimenting began with running my OD-2 into my Way Huge Green Rhino so that I could recover the bottom end that the Boss shelved off. My advice to anyone is to dig into and experiment with whatever you’ve got lying around before starting a big collection of OD pedals, each just for one particular sound.

    This is excellent. Boss makes my favorite drive pedals... They sound excellent and you cannot break them. If they were more expensive people would think they sounded better lol... Well played sir, keep the tones coming.

    • @lueyteledeluxe7457
      @lueyteledeluxe7457 Před 5 lety +6

      A million per cent, they would (think the sd1 better if it were more expensive)! In Marketing, we call that (price) a surrogate indicator of quality. i. e. Expensive=good, cheap=crap. It's reinforced, correctly, so much that we, as consumers, simply cannot accept that cheap can equal good, let alone the best.
      So if Boss wanted to be like every other capitalist pig, they could increase the price by 250%, hand paint generic dyi stomp box kits and name them some ridiculous thinly veiled sexual innuendo that just oozes bad taste.... and watch the internet break giving them 5star reviews. Well. That's how it plays out in a Marketers daydream anyway. In reality, such a play would likely work, short term at least.
      I don't know about everyone else, but I own boss style compact fx boxes, and I own boutique pedals. Both good tones. But for physical function, boss boxes (sd1, or ts9 - not "boss," but same style) are the most comfortable and convenient to stomp. Imean , who wants to aim the soft underbelly of their foot at a metal rod that looks like the nine inch nail coming out of Jesus' feet?!
      Boss= best. Even Josh at jhs says it. Therefore it IS GOSPEL!! 🤗

      @@lueyteledeluxe7457 Oh yes, the price gouging Hypnosis trick; very interesting Mind Control there. I believe the Lego corporation did the same when they were in financial straits by raising their prices to unreasonable levels to make themselves seem more "high end" or "luxury" and therefore somehow more "desirable". There are definitely enough REALLY crappy and ridiculously overpriced "Luxury" vehicles out there that will reliably leave you constantly stranded or dealing with safety recalls. One of my all time favorite pedals. THE original overdrive. Very over looked, and underated. Still the absolute best pedal to tighten up a loose and flabby amp. The trick to the SD1 is to get the amp as close as possible to the sound you are looking for and let the pedal get you the rest of the way. On a different note I'll add, way before the boutique overdrive pedal explosion with pedals costing $200 and more. No pedal, not even the Tubescreamer got you that tight aggressive metal sound quite like the SD1 can, and I have both brands and many more. Just ask Zack Wylde. Nice job reintroducing a legend to the masses.

    One thing I always wanted to ask: with a delay like TC Flashback, Boss DD-7, any small pedal that doesn't have a readout for delay time, how is it that you can set the delay time so precisely (eg: 300ms)? Do you just take the maximum delay time "sweep" (for want of a better word) then work out roughly where 300ms is on the knob? I use a DD-7, for example I want to do Run Like Hell dotted 8ths part. I select 800ms mode, then I would set the delay time knob to where I think 440 ms (is it 440?) liies, is that sort of right?

    Great demonstration! Do you think one could use a SD1 to cover some of the tones from the Colorsound Powerboost era? Also- as far as budget pedals go, ya gotta check out the TC Tube Pilot. It’s like a very scaled down Tube Driver, imho, and with the right set up can get you some great Gilmour Tube Driver tones.

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před 4 lety +1

      The BD2 is much closer to the Powerboost. The SD1 is basically a Tube Screamer, with lots of compression and mid range. Quite the oposite of the Powerboost. Check out my review of the BD2 here on my channel :)

    • @gilmourishofficial
      @gilmourishofficial  Před rokem

      No I don’t think you need it but it depends on how much distortion you’re using. Noise suppressors often kill the dynamics of your tone. Better to roll back the gain, use shieldrd cables, good quality powering and learn how to turn away from the amp to avoid feedback and your pickups picking up hum.

    Nice tones and nice playing Bjorn. Thanks for uploading this! I always liked the SD1 for that mid boosty, smooth compression thing; even better than most tube screamers (except the 808 original). I don‘t think the SD1 sounds anything like the Tube Driver though. It does not produce this insanely rich overtone spectrum that the Tube Driver does, it is more mid focused and it compresses differently (to my ears). You always sound Gilmour‘ish to me through whatever you play because you have the picking and technique down to a science, I guess :-) anyways, thanks again and cheers.

      gilmourish riis thank you! IMHO the BD-2 is closer to the Tube Driver than the SD1 - I tested it after reading about it on another Website and found it to be true. Nonetheless, the SD1 is a very nice pedal with a hard to beat price/performance ratio (as is the BD2 of course). Thanks again for the nice video.

      I did not say that the BD-2 has a boost in the mids ... it doesn‘t. I love that thing - it sits so well in a band mix, just great. I like the brightness of the BD-2. whether you can take the tone past 10 o clock or not is a matter of how you EQ your amp. I never really go past noon though.

      Depends entiry on what amp you're using and how you've set it. As I said in the clip too, although I must say that I prefer the TS808 over the SD-1, the latter has more gain and low end, which makes it more suitable for clean amps and smaller setups but again, it all depends on the amp and settings...
