    I think this is the first time I have EVER seen a new car review provide centimetre dimensions of the boot space, rather than just quoting the sales brochure spiel of '670 litres' . This should be mandatory for all car reviewers, it makes narrowing down your car choice much easier when you have snowboards, bikes, golf clubs etc to carry.

    Congratulations Thomas, you are the best motor journalist on the web.
    Recently I bought a new car, your reviews were really helpful to make up my mind...
    Now I have the new Ford Focus Hatchback ST-Line with 17 inches alloy wheels, I think the car is very comfortable if we chose to use the right tire pressure - indicated by Ford 2.3 psi - or a little bit above - 2.5 in front and 2.4 in the rear. When I picked up the car from the dealer the tire pressure was about 2.8 and the driving experience was quite rigid.
    In my opinion, the new Focus is an excellent car, good looking, fun to drive and very, very safe.
    Keep on with the good work, cheers from Portugal.

    Hi, l found your review to be be very balanced and fair, with much the same views as my own.
    I do not have a new Focus Turnier but my test drive found much the same as yours.
    I like the Turnier model because it looks really very sporty, having said that the Hatch version has never appealed to me.
    The front of this version l feel is rather ugly, unlike the previous face lifted models.
    The rear of the Turnier is a slight improvement although possibly a little Volvo influence creeping in.
    I would have liked to have seen a split tailgate entry arrangement allowing the opening of the rear window without the need to open the whole rear door to make the car even more versatile.
    Inside the additional length is long overdue of course and now it may be to late in the day.
    The mechanics of the focus speak for themselves and are excellent .

    This model is getting bigger and bigger with each generation and parking spaces in car parks hadn't got wider or longer and roads are still the same width as before. Its probably the same size as the next model up the Mondeo from the previous generation!

    • @pellekuipers4076
      @pellekuipers4076 Před 5 lety

      no, as a mk4 Mondeo driver I can tell you it's not. The mk 4 Mondeo is still 17 cm longer, 6 cm wider and over 100kg heavier than the new Focus. The curent (mk5) Mondeo is even longer.
      The most intresting difference is the trunk. The new focus has over 600l of cargo space with the rear seats up. That's massive, more than any mondeo and even more than many E segment cars. It is only when you put the seats down you will notice the car is not that big and the additional size of D and E segment cars becomes apparent.
      I agree on the parking issue, every centimeter you ad to your car makes it harder to park. Especialy in urban garages. In the end the focus wagon is just a C segment hatchback with a big trunk, but still smaller than a Mondeo

    Not sold on the side profile, but I really like the hind quarters. The front is an evolution of the previous gen focus, so that is OK. Ford build quality has never been the reason to buy their vehicles, though crappy trim fitment at eye level and loose mirror parts seem like a particularly poor engineering / production decision. I think that the 16" rims are nearly perfect, allowing taller tire walls for rougher roads into camping destinations or post winter pothole navigation. The engine choices are rough once that estate is loaded up with more than one person, luggage, etc. How is the brightness on the infotainment system screen? It looks quite dim in the video. Damn, I wish that Ford would offer this revised Focus hatch and estate in the USA.

    • @skagerstrom
      @skagerstrom Před 5 lety +1

      16" wheels are probably just there because of winter wheels. ST Line will probably have 18". People rarley get large rims on winter wheels. Expensive and low profile is bad in deep snow as snow gets inside the rims and can cause vibrations as it freezes etc. And small rims will somewhat protect the brakes from salt splashes. Looks weird on this ballony sport styled car though. But it's the reality of the winter part of the year - at least here in Sweden :P
      I'd say that low profile tires really doesn't affect how the car handles bad roads though. I have 18" 225/45 winter wheels and it works just as fine as anything els.

    Great review. I however disagree with you regarding the dashboard design looking aged. It is contemporary and functional, thankfully retaining actual buttons and physical shortcuts instead of dirty screens and slow menus that could potentially cause serious accidents in the name of gadgetry modernism. If it works best, don't change it ;) As for build quality, these are typically pre-production cars improving considerably over time. Considering promotions and discounts and the fun you get at the wheel, this car should be a much needed huge success seeing Ford's poor selling results in Europe lately.

      Having just bought one, I do agree somewhat with him about the interior design. It's absolutely fine, nothing wrong with it. But it could have been 5 years old. It's certainly not amazing like the new A-class and Peugeot 508. Considered the C5 Aircross and it sure looks a lot better inside, but the driving dynamics and technology of the Ford won me over (and an unbeatable lease deal, woop)

    The bright red colour does not suit the Focus' shape. It would look much better in a darker colour and with 17 or 18 inch rims, as Thomas says.
    I actually like the assymmetrical exhaust.

    Is there really more leg room in the estate? It's very rare for manufacturers to change the wheelbase length (or the position of the seats). Normally it's just the boot area that's extended.

    Nice review! I'd always put handling and driving experience in front of most of other components of a car, since we spend most of the time handling it, right? Interior, both design and comfort wise is already an improvement comparing to previous generation. Dating it 5 years old is too harsh. Sir, please, a metallic gray hatchback for me!

      @Aleksandar Zolotic - Agree with you - but in the UK we don't spend most of our time 'handling' our car. We spend most time in traffic jams, or stopped at roadworks, or moving slowly over broken-up tarmac. Then there is usually a low speed limit on other roads! A nice interior that you look at when stopped is good thing in a car. And soft springs for the potholes!

    • @CherryGS
      @CherryGS Před 5 lety

      For german roads the ride is just fine. Firm, but far from "harsh". I once drove a 2007 "Seat Leon II FR" for a couple of months, that one had a really harsh (bumpy, shaky) and upleasant ride (and that opion comes from a way younger me). The ST-Line just feels very well planted, not to much body roll, while at the same time smoothing out the bumps very nicely. I was very positively surprised by the ride quality after having seen some reviews calling it "too firm".

    Great vid as always....now.
    A) looks better than the Astra
    B) rear of estate looks just like the fiat Tipo estate, which looks good.
    C) the focus badge looks naff in my opinion.. I have seen a few around already in the uk.
    D) would never buy a petrol ford, not after the reliability issues and the 2 litre diesel bhp is VERY low.. So as a prospective customer the octavia is looking better alround
