Why Do My Film LUTs Look Bad ? - KODAK 2383

- No Intro - PRO techniques from an experienced colourist - Why do Film Luts look Bad in DaVinci Resolve. There is a BIG MISTAKE lots of people make when applying the film luts - fixed here in 5 minutes.
*Just to clarify throughout I mention Cineon as 'Colour Space' - I mean Cineon as 'Gamma'. It is not a colour space change but a gamma curve change. I know it has confused a few people, and understand so clarifying here - pressure of recording for CZcams - hopefully the main take away of this episode is still apparent.

Thanks.
few addictions to this method:
1) you "should" put the "resolve tone mapping" to "none" so the transform is more mathematically correct, this is a change from v16 where the default was "none"
2) if you have a log input you can go straight from log to cineon log, for example if you have alexa log files, you can do alexa logC/logC to rec709/cineon log.
3) you can (should?) add a small highlights corrections to smooth the shoulder of the curve, those luts are particularly aggressive in clipping the highlights
4) I recommend a node after the lut that only deals with the flare of the lut, you can make the output black a bit more intense just by lowering the shadows. a grayscale before the lut will shows where the true black sits.
Hi Walter, Yes, seems the Resolve tone mapping with default wide gamut needs looking at on a node basis. Your point 2).. I get..trying to keep the workflow here easier for the vast majority of my subscribers .. I think my workflow helps that here, but appreciated technically of course.
3 and 4 are great tips - appreciated and I see the clouds clipped - on a real grade I would fix pre 709 CST - I wasn't intending to get too detailed in this episode - its hard to know where to stop on CZcams to keep attention and not lose people - appreciate the notes though. This was of course an example grade. Thank you for contributing - so much appreciated. Hard to balance going too deep on CZcams - I think that is where Masterclasses are king! Watch this space. !! All the best, and thanks for contributing. Darren.
@@DarrenMostyn of course! I was trying to go "the next step".....
@@waltervolpatto6096 totally appreciated!!! The fact you are even looking at this is making me smile! I get it - I have to work out my next strategy to get this info that we have when experienced users on here without opening lots of questions that will confuse less experienced. I have a plan though. Keep you posted! I would love to think you have picked up 'some' tips from my channel!! All the best, and thanks for contributing! Darren.

Thanks. Appreciate the subs (double subs in fact!). I'll be doing a LIVE after I hit 20K subs so thank you for getting me closer. All the best.
Best tip ever! I've been perplexed why using lut's has given me such a horrible experience, and I even have tried reducing the opacity to no avail. This is huge for me, thx!
Great to hear it helped you Ken!
WOW I have had a million questions about the film LUTs in resolve forever now and you answered them all in 5 minutes!!!! Thanks for sure!!
You are welcome Jonathan.
This is the only place we can learn proper color grading
Humbled. Thank you.
totaly agree!!
the TRUTH. the Resolve Trifecta Darren, Patrick, Mr. Alex ❤
Exactly
YES! Finally this makes sense. Thanks Darren.
always great to explain these things. there are QUITE a few people who think LUTS are "filters" and obviously they arent (well, in a sense they are but you know what I mean). I had a friend who made a short and showed it to me. He was literally applying the film LUTS on top of rec709 and just left them dark and crunched. I said "what the hell happened?" and he said "you dont understand, these are 'film LUTS' and this makes it more cinematic. this is how films in the 70's were shot!". I explained the basics of color grading to him and he was like "ooohhhh" ha ha. Don't ever underestimate the importance of these "simple" tutorials. they are anything but. You touch on things that many people ignore, as they've usually gotten to a particular link in the chain and never go further because they don't understand the importance. This is where you come in:). cheers!
Thank you again, Darren!
Like always: competent, straight to the point, no unnecessary introduction, no advertising and foremost: no stupid intro!

Yet another useful Video Darren, I did exactly what you have said NOT to do .. and did dial it back with terrible results, now I know how to do another CST and the Compound Clip. thanks as always !
Glad you got it working.
Amazing as always!

The node prior to the Film emulation LUT gives much more control. So I usually tend to put three nodes. In first I convert image to Rec.709 using DCT. then I put another node where I use Lift, Gamma, Gain to adjust image and then again I convert it to Log as you shown and put the Emulation LUT.
Well, well, well - up to the very last step with the compound node and the key output - I thought that I knew everything about that. So a big little lesson there for me. Thanks Darren. When I thought that the film emulation was too contrasty I tended to try to pull some contrast out. This method you use is a better and faster choice.
I think that people might be confused as to why the emulations work on some things and not on others. The reason that happens is because there quite a few LOG gammas curves that are based on Cineon gamma. So someone may have tried it directly on Arri log C, or Vlog, or Slog-3, and it looked pretty good without doing any CST.
I always forget about using the compound node, and this is good application of why I should be using it. Thanks again.
Glad you like the compound node trick. I actually sometimes use Arri LogC instead of Cineon (just for a look - even if not Arri source) but though that might be too heavy to explain in this episode. Hope you are keeping well...all the best, darren.
Oh man, another good one. Respect my man. I often wondered what was the point of those LUTs when they never looked good when applied. Thanks for this.
Glad I could help!
thanks so much m Darren Mostyn 🙏🙏🙏

Great stuff for me, a guy that is new to log grading and want to try luts. This technic got me better result than I have before. So much to learn :)
Glad to hear Tarjei. Have a good weekend.
Finally, someone shows us how to dial it back properly...I've been trying to figure this out for some time now.
Interestingly, some people insist on putting the CST, and film LUT near the start, with maybe some adjustments in between, but sat, look, and other nodes after it all, not before. I think I prefer it at the end, like you did it.
Anyhoo, thanks for clarifying this procedure for me.
Cullen is a very good friend of mine, and very respected in our industry. His knowledge is vast, deep and accurate.
You are most welcome. Im sorry that so many people have been using it wrong for so long!
@@cicolas_nage qazi puts on a very good show. For someone who is a beginner, he's very convincing. I certainly learned a lot from him. I had a look at a bit of Cullen, different style, already learned some huge timevsavers from him.

@@DarrenMostyn a huge difference. Perhaps counter-intuitive as the LUTs are labelled Rec 709, but need the Cineon Film Log transform first. Thanks again.
@@raywatts5702 agreed, but that means they go to REC709, and there is also P3 options too.

Awesome! Thanks

You can also select your node, change the node to Rec.709 gamma Cineon: then apply the Lut to that same node.
This single node based colourspace/gamma transform only applies to tools within the node, then after the node out reverts back to your timeline settings with Resolve doing all of the translation work.
The CST node transform shown here to change the working gamma to cineon adds extra steps that are only useful when you need a complex CST with changes to IDT, and ODT characteristics.
The single node method is often used to slip into HSV to apply saturation purely to channel 2., or to shift into a linear gamma to use offset as an exposure tool.
Newbie here: correct me if I get anything fundamentally wrong, or if the way I explain things is confusing.
Ahh, I see Walter Volpatto has already mentioned why and how a complex CST solution is warranted. So my two cents is only fit for newbies.
Thank you, you solved my problem very well!
Thats what I love to hear!
thank you very much
