- Ok someone already made a video like this one, but there were lack of transitions and has too much talking, especially for an all fights video. So I decided to fix these problems by adding transitions and have less amount of talking, hope you enjoy.
Super Mario Bros. Z is a sprite animated mini series created by Alvin-Earthworm. He remade episode 1 as he was working on the series reboot from scratch after episode 8 was released. He had a patreon involving the reboot but was later shut down by Nintendo. Fortunately, Alvin has recently started to continue working on the reboot in 2020. When he finishes the reboot, I might do the same thing with it like this video so I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Just to be clear about the music: I DID NOT add any music at all, all I did was ripping all episodes of this series and adding transitions. I don't know why there's music overlapping each other in some of the fight scenes but that happens on the original sources.
It's not your fault some people just don't know that SMBZ was originally viewed with flash rather than an mp4

The 3 way battle between Mario and Friends, Koopa Bros., and Axem Rangers was a revolutionary fight. The dynamism, choreography, and environment interaction was all way ahead of its time.
and we have sonic not using its max speed like he did when the axem rangers black and yellow transformed into a ball
I think that was the biggest battle ever done in animation at the time, because damn, a 12 man brawl is something extremely difficult and it was made by a single guy with lots of free time

Sometimes, Luigi is more than a number 2.

Yeah, I watched it on CZcams before I knew so much about Mario
@Michael Miller Uncultured Swine alert
I’ve been playing Mario since I was a toddler
I used to watch it on fucking Newgrounds, and it was in Chapter 3 in that moment.
I still watch SMBZ to this day
Man, one thing I love about this series is how all the main characters have a certain fighting style and skill/power level and it remains consistent.
Mario is the most experienced of the heroes. He's mastered the ins and outs of each of his powerups, knowing exactly how far he can push, say, cape feather's flight or fire flower's firepower. Not only that, but he always remembers his hammer and spin, and can use them for supporting his strength and speed as needed.
Luigi is really good at playing support. He's not incompetent, being overall good with the same powerups as Mario has, but he uses them (or gets used) more in defensive ways or to help others. With Sonic, he uses a hammer to pinball him into enemies. In the ship hold, he stays in statue form and lets himself be used as a bludgeon until the perfect time to strike.
Sonic is hands down the fastest character in terms of reaction times. He's really good at going with the flow, adjusting to whatever new attack or sudden shift easily. Split second openings are his usual targets and more often than not he manages to take advantage of them.
Shadow is perhaps the strongest fighter on the heroes, but he doesn't play very well with others. He'll even attack his own teammates if they're in his way. But he has the strength to back it up, really. Chaos powers let him essentially dominate his area of the battlefield, so long as he has the power (or Chaos Emerald) to use them with.
Finally, Metal Sonic is absolutely relentless. It's actually very straightforward: shoot at target, spin attack at target, take target's weapon and kill target. It's his straightforward approach that makes him a bit predictable and makes him get outmaneuvered several times. But he learns as he fights. So tricks like Yoshi's egg toss and tongue grab only work once on him before he can adapt to them.
Good look just imagine if sonic and Shadow fused against Mecha 🗣️🔥🙏🏽
Didn’t mention Yoshi’s fighting style, so I’d like to give my own analysis on it.
He tends to be a bit of an all-around type of fighter. He doesn’t excel in one specific area, but instead is well versed in all sorts of areas. He isn’t the fastest, but has been seen to be able to keep up with some very fast characters. Not only that, but he’s good at using his surrounding and abilities given to his advantage. Of course, there’s his egg throws and tongue grab, but he also tends to use outside sources if available-like Luigi when he was in a shell or statue.
I think his skill shows a lot better in the remake, where he seems to hold his own for a while in a one on one versus Metallix before the chaos emeralds got involved.
@@chazerulezYoshi also pretty good at baiting attack and counter attack back, alot of his attack are grab and shooting projectile back to enemies.
That's totally right! I liked the descriptions of combat style.
I like to think that Sonic was always sandbagging when it came to his speed so the rest of the team could keep up. He hardly ever got hit and his reaction time was freakin’ insane. Not to mention that there were a few moments where he REALLY sped up.
Sonic is the ultimate sandbagger
It’s his greatest weakness, since it means he’s not accustomed to going all out. So his best feats tend to come in bursts
At least, that’s how I see him in this series
Sonic is awesome especially when he transforms into fire sonic
NullifytheShark Mario was indeed faster than classic sonic in their time plus cape Mario is way to quick to control at times so I am not bragging but if any one could some what be a little slower but still kinda hanging in there with speed they all have the speed to do it well tails keeps up naturally Luigi can just do what Mario does so yea I always found sonic the speedy type and Mario the power type.
@@howlnwolf3321 I always say that in terms of physical strength, Mario is stronger than Sonic, and Sonic is just faster.
fuegosonic93 exactly, I agree. I was just putting a fun fact that Mario was faster then sonic on their classic games.

I LOVE how Super Mario Bros. Z uses its fight scenes to tell you about the characters.
Mecha Sonic's cold, calculated brutality gets across the complete lack of humanity in the hateful machine.
And something I always love is when Mario fights Mecha Sonic. In my opinion, aside from Shadow and Sonic, Mario is the one who fights most vehemently against the walking natural disaster that is Mecha Sonic, and that says a lot about him as a character. Shadow and Sonic both have personal vendetta against Mecha Sonic, but Mario fights Mecha Sonic with almost the same passion despite having no history with the robot. He throws himself against this villain from another world with everything he has.
It really showcases and bravery and devotion to doing what's right that's shown in the games with how he traverses so many dangerous areas to save Peach. It's just a brilliant way to make Mario seem so heroic despite hardly ever saying a word throughout the series.
@redloiyu654jay Thanks!
Shadow was kinda Op. in the show just like I remember. They kept his power scale pretty accurate, also with the other characters as well.
Pizza Passta the only thing that always confused me as a kid was why it seemed as though sonic is unable to use chaos control. the battle on space colony ark where sonic used chaos control to escape being shot into space was even mentioned at some point in smbz. i could only assume it was because he once said (in one of the games) that he’s overall against using chaos control and would rather never do it if possible, and maybe sonic in smbz is still feeling that way.
i was also always waiting for shadow to take off his rings
@Pizza Passta Shadow was made with the power to manipulate and control chaos energy even from one emerald, it's second nature to him.
It’s worth noting that during the giant Yoshi Island fight, Shadow even get hit once until 28:07

I don't want to sound like that typical Nostalgia magnet...but...ugh.
This was one of those series that made original CZcams years so much fun. It's was about ENTERTAINMENT and not BUSINESS. The days where the vast majority of the average public could just make things that they wanted to out of fun without having to fear of getting sued or having a huge part of their life destroyed because of a corporation that feels the need to destroy someone who doesn't stand a chance against them financially in any sort of way. The times were it wasn't filled with Petty drama or lack of care from lazy creators who just rely on me or things that are straight-up clickbait and actually creative. Where everybody is just trying to play it safe and doing the exact same thing at the next 1000 people next to them. No adds, no "exclusive" bulls!t, no censorship, NO EXCEPTIONS. Just people who wanted to show off their creativity.
This series was amazing I remember my friends relatives and neighbors alike who are all Mario or Sonic fans would all be crowded around the computer and just watching intensely. Getting hyped by the fights and plot twists. Ahh, Good times.
43:43 Ngl this made my mind explode like a nuke!

@Gavin Phoenix Ballesteros
You have NO IDEA 🤩🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is exactly why we need a Mario and Sonic adventure game, not an olympics game every few years or so. So much potential being wasted on the olympics.
Everyone feels the same way. But sadly, Nintendo FUCKIN' DISAGREES. Look at the recent Mario platformers made by Nintendo. They are the same OLD SHIT over and over again. Princess gets kidnapped, Mario has to save the world with Luigi and 2 Toads, he has to beat Koopalings, Junior and Kamek and Bowser at the end. And always, I mean always, the final boss is Bowser being a giant monster. You can make Giga Bowser as the final boss of one of them; but no, Nintendo must be too friendly towards the young age and their parents won't let them buy a game with a ferocious and blood-thirsty Bowser as the final boss.
Sure, they added Boom Boom back and it was good since he was long forgotten, but I feel like he's milked a lot like Koopalings as well. Maybe we could fight all Koopalings at the same time which NSMB2 could have done, but instead, they are more asserted into an obstacle rather than a boss itself. When we fans try to do something like this, Nintendo copyrights us and takes away everything we make. Seriously, Sega has allowed its fans to make a game that would fuel the nostalgia within the fans' souls and it was a massive success, yet it was also modded a lot. But Nintendo doesn't accept these kind of concepts. Until Sonic Mania's release, I loved Nintendo more than Sega, but after Mania's release, Sega is now my favourite boy. Nintendo can continue make their old and nostalgia-hungry fans cry like a baby meanwhile satisfying the cringy 6-year olds who are obssessed with shitty games like Fortnite.
@Phoenix Mason It is true. It seems that Nintendo lost its element of badassery after Super Paper Mario. That game was amazing in terms of story, but it was also dark on some levels. Guess after that, Nintendo chickened out and didn't risk it to make a game with an impactful story ever again. Their "new" platformers have the same old plot. Nintendo has made many characters in Paper Mario franchise and %99 of them are forgotten. Seeing those characters again in modern games would be amazing. But anyway, we are just blabbering around and Nintendo will keep remaking the NSMB games like 1000 times. Maybe Bowser has some cool ideas to share in the future, who knows? (Not the King koopa, the one who replaced Reggie)
I mean, we have Smash bros. Brawl and Ultimate, but those don't count since the two literally don't interact at all.
Frost Sprite lol, did Smash 4 get erased from your mind?
@@whaleping Smash 4 doesn't have a real adventure mode.
As much as I appreciate new series like Super Mario Bros GT, none of them ever quite capture the hectic energy of SMBZ battles such as 25:46 and 27:51. Something I miss
Sure, there are many animation series that try to create the same adrenaline and energy as SMBZ did, but let me tell you this: SMBZ was a different kettle of fish. The series had so much potential like there were so many planned arcs and we would see a tournament arranged by Metallix just like Cell did. Even after Metallix's death, there were so many enemies like Smithy and maybe Wart and allies like Rosalina and Geno planned for aftermath of Metallix Arc. Sadly, Nintendo's being of too careful and securitive about Mario's rights put this train out of its tracks.
@@suckerman7gm that was for the reboot though.
SMBHotS comes close to what SMBZ but recently I've been having mixed thought on Asylus work like I don't know why I have this thoughts when I like the series but after some episodes following the original episode 3, still not understanding why he bothers remaking some episodes (like c'mon, episode 8 or 9 was good as it was why change), the fights stopped being original and on an then take scenes of other series and put them in the fights, being the Episode 11 an entire rip off of Goku vs Beerus in the anime with them on space and pulling dragons out of nowhere with the Racoon power ups
@@marcosgalvis3498 No, they were already planned for the original series, but due to him letting go, they were gone. He planned to bring them back for the reboot, but now Nintendo fucked him up.
Also, Asylus has other projects which cause him to not prioritize SMBHotS as much as he wanted to. That series has a great storyline and breaks the traditions of these series by making them happen after the recently released game's events and such. But that series has made it to where the spinoff series like Paper Mario never happened. That is the aspect I love about the series.
@@marcosgalvis3498 My guess is that he wanted to make them better and smoothed out the episodes andalso make them better in terms of story. The one episode I remember he remade was the one where Fawful debuted in. We could tell it was fawful because he said his name in one of his flashbacks, so Asylus remade it so that we wouldn't know it was Fawful until the very ending of the episode or just after the flashback. He made some goofups within the episodes or something in the episodes weren't just right to him and he ended up changing it, not by much, but enough.

I miss SMBZ man. If only Nintendo didn’t come after Mark Haynes, then he would’ve surely finished the series.
Yeah, this series had so much potential. Not only the fanmade animations, Nintendo tries to end the fangames that have a creative storyline, bosses etc. and tries to stick our skulls into the same old crappy plot which was there since 1985: Princess gets kidnapped, Mario has to defeat Bowser, rinse and repeat. Only differences are sometimes Mario has allies like Luigi, Toad etc. and Bowser has allies. Nothing else is changed. And making it modern doesn't make it any better. Unless they bring back some other guys like Geno and Mallow and add some other minor villains which also have some effect into the story like Wario Bros, they won't be A+ for me.
It's been said many times before, and I'll say it.
Mark made a Patreon for SMBZ, and Nintendo doesn't like it when people try to profit off of fan projects. So they took the Patreon down, but Mark can still make and continue SMBZ. He just can't make money off of it.

Looking back, the Basilix fight is my favorite fight scene ever devised. Mainly cause of one detail.
His use of Stone Luigi. Villains using loved ones and allies as leverage against the heroes is nothing new *by far* but what makes this different was the fact the action *NEVER. STOPPED.* Basilix saw an opportunity (however dirty it was) to gain the upperhand. As soon as he picks up Luigi, he taunts Mario then before Mario strikes would put his brother up before the exchange to make him hesitate. Its a really simple action (that too had been done before but not as much) but the fact that this moment is done in fluid animation and the action not stopping, as well as that moments like this would've been broken up by dialogue it was a super refreshing take on this cliche. Absolutely blown away when i first saw this years ago.

I love that the fight scenes from the original run take up an *hour* of screentime, and Mark did it all with FLASH. In a time when Newgrounds couldn't even handle hour-long uploads! They actually had to update the site JUST so he could squeeze in Episode 7 (I think).
17:39 The ORIGINAL tournament of power.
I just realized the song after Mario gets the first fire flower is called “firestarter”
Good choice
I'll always love these parts where the villain loses whatever it is that was giving them the edge and the hero makes sure to let their opponent know that when they're through with the villain, they'll be nothing but fucking molecules
It sucks that AlvinEarthworm discontinued the series after the introduction of Capt. Basilisk.
If it's being continued in some way, i'd like to see what continuation there is after this. Atleast, by a fan that can keep it to the original design and format Alvin had his.
... Man I feel old, this brings back my childhood memories.
it gives me memories from how this fights are
We gotta give props to Yoshi tho, with how powerful base Mecha Sonic was and he was able to not only survive but but a semi decent fight speaks levels
Crazy how the original series technically is a bad end for the characters lol
Yeah, Mario was on the edge of death by Basilisx's hands. Luigi, Yoshi and Sonic were petrified. Shadow was against Mecha Sonic, and according to the plot, Shadow was going to lose anyway. So, he would either die or suffer alone. Stuffwell was only there, but most likely he would be destroyed and the 5 Emeralds he had was going to be in Bowser and Eggman's hands.
@@suckerman7gm luigi actually unpetrified himself with the tanookie suit, so there was still hope
@@josaete2297 Well, what if Tanooki Suit negating the petrification deus ex machina didn't happen? It was a bad end for the heroes after all.
That Episode 9 preview is technically not canon in terms of plot. It was just the current plans for that episode jumbled on because people kept pushing Mark to make Episode 9.
@@suckerman7gm My guess is that the only way to revert the petrification is to kill Basilisk (like Dabura on DBZ). Luigi can put up a fight against Basilisk but I doubt he can kill him, so I really don't know how that would end. Maybe Luigi cures Mario and they fight together and they would have a greater chance to kill Basilisk. However, Shadow is doomed. There's no way I can possibly know what would happen to him. Although, he does have some Chaos Emeralds of I recall correctly, so maybe he's gonna use them against Mecha Sonic, who knows.
@@hyper9984 All Emeralds were in Stuffwell. Also, your guess was technically used in a fan animation. (Mario beat Basilisx, and the others were unpetrified)
My question is WHY TF DIDN'T THEY CONTINUE WITH THIS SERIES?! IT WAS SO GOOD...
The guy that made these original episodes has been through alot. For example back when episode 8 originally came out, the author mentioned he was going through a period where he felt so burned out to continue the series while developing episode 9, and he also had problems with severe depression. Episode 8 came out in 2009 and he announced the cancellation of the project in 2012 and released some very early footage of what would have been episode 9.
He did eventually announce a reboot of the project in 2016, where a remastered version of episode 1 was released, however he then proceeded to go on another 4 year hiatus but I can't remember the reason for this.
He then returned yet again in 2020/2021 where a remastered version of episode 2 released, and since then, nothing else has happened. There was also a period where nintendo forced him to take down his patreon due to SMBZ having licensed copyrighted characters which again brought him to an all time low and I'm pretty sure he almost cancelled the reboot again after it happened.
Bringing us to today to my knowledge, he is still working on this and hasn't cancelled the reboot, but at this point, the guy's been through so much crap over the years and still gets harassment from people today on twitter which he was also lashing out at often. Honestly I don't think the guys mental state has improved all that much so I personally don't believe this will ever be finished. Hopefully that gave you some insight into what happened with SMBZ and why it was originally cancelled.
Alvin really 'got' what made sprite animation good. bc you can't really make sprite fight scenes like regular animation, the characters can't move smoothly in detail, individual moves probably have like 3 frames of animation. So you really have to get creative with the flow of the fight itself, the pacing and the back-and-forth. Alvin got it *perfectly.* everything is fast paced and characters fly in and out of frame and use their momentum to flow into attacks, but it never feels too fast to follow; you know if Mario got knocked off screen to the left he'll come back in from the left or the top for a counterattack. it all works *SO WELL*
maaaan i used to love this series...
To call this series ahead of its time would be putting this masterpiece too lightly.
Rewatching this for what feels like the 15th time. This man literally brought us a masterpiece. The choreography, the humor, the editing, the timing. Respect to the OG. HOPE HE IS WELL
Why can’t fight scenes nowadays have this god level of quality
Even after all these years these fights are still great & fun to watch
40:50 this is pure fire
I'm forever grateful for Alvin-Earthworm and the phenomenal work he did with this series. Hate to sound selfish but I wish he had completed it. Thank you wherever you are.
I'm totally fine with it being unfinished. I'm grateful for every single second we got of it. It's still so incredible and awesome to come back to and it made such a big impact on me as a kid.
The dude has been through alot including years of burnout, severe depression and also nintendo forcing him to take down his patreon due to SMBZ. It won't ever be finished but we can at least be grateful and enjoy what we do have!
I just saw the reboot and WOW !
It was allready amazing before but the new version is *FANTASTIC* !!!
Wow. I didn't realize exactly how much had changed between the original and reboot. I'm glad Alvin's back and he's also re-releasing the originals.
Dude watching this as a kid Mecha sonic was so unbelievably terrifying like I had high hopes he was gonna kill all of them because he was just so insanely strong that every character feared him even being near not to mention he mopped the floor with the current big time villains in a matter of minutes in the most brutal way possible like breaking reds shell the turning the whole damn island into just a burnt husk also not to mention his fight with our Yoshi was just so painful to watch he stomped his into the dirt at high speeds and slingshot his tongue this show really made Mecha the scariest thing ever even now when I play sonic 3 and knuckles again I see that guy and just know he has so much untapped potential
I was 8 when i watched this masterpiece for first time, I can't describe how much i was excited and amazed by this epic fights, the music and my most favourite characters ever. I couldn't understand any of plot because i haven't know english at least a little bit, but epic fights was everything i needed then.
31:46 as soon as he put his hands in that position I shed a tear of awesomeness😂
We went from Metal Bowser to Fire Flower Sonic. All I can say is, this series didn't just look good. It was genius.
Shadow and Yoshi are probably my favorite characters
These animations were so ahead of it's time and they still look great to this day
50 minutes of pure AWESOMENESS
Brawl on a vanishing island is still to this day my favourite flash animation ever made
*THE BEST BATTLES🔥🔥🔥*
Jesus, the choreography reminds me so much of the quality put into the Sonic RPG/Final Fantasy Sonic X games.
rewatching this after the reboot and oh my godddd Mark has easily surpassed himself. These are classic and amazing but god the reboot is just levels above.
I’m so glad this is coming back, this was such a big part of my childhood
