I can see why having a knowledgeable instructor can be a huge help opposed to learning alone. Even though a lot of these tips and techniques are common sense to being an effective swordsman, most people wouldn't think about them until they've experienced them. I never thought about most of these things. Thanks again.
Having experienced all of these moves, I have to say this video was more valuable, because it helped me to really understand why and all the different permutations. Really cool.
We decided to upload a later episode for our launch to give a better indicator of our final product. We had a myriad of technical issues at the beginning, and we didn't want those issues (some still withstanding, primarily audio) to be indicative of our standard of quality.

That's where almost all of the HEMA material is being hosted.Look at the left side of the home page and you'll see a section called 'weapons';.
Go there and look for spear.

I also suggest going to'The HEMA Alliance' facebook group and asking for more online sources there :)
I do so love the hanging parry. One thing to keep in mind though, is it doesn't necessarily win the fight, and it doesn't always put you in control. I don't recall which master the play was from, but in one of the Bolognese sources I study with side sword, the attacker (agent) swings at the head without a huge commitment, but still forceful. The patient (defender) performs a hanging parry and follows with an attack to the other side, as the instructor shows in this video. The defender thinks he has out maneuvered his opponent, until his follow up cut is countered with a false edge beat, and then it is the original attacker who delivers the finishing blow.
Nice work you guys. I like how you emphasize that you must master the basics rather then trying to do fancy moves you're not ready for yet.
I am a new student to HEMA. I've been training for 3 months, and I applaud you for this channel and these videos. My instructor will be moving away in 2 months so these videos will be a vital and crucial part to my solo-study curriculum.

Don't generalize Hollywood as it is just the name of the place where various filmmakers gather to make movies. Anything can happen in movies as they can subvert or avert tropes/clichés. After all, there are no rules in Hollywood that dictate on how to tell a story. There isn't even a boss who oversees and dictates how all movies should be like. It does make more sense to refer to studios, groups, individuals, etc. as they can have a consistent track record.

It also saddens me that whenever someone mentions the name Hollywood, it is usually in a negative remark, giving the name negative connotations.

An actual, authentic, hyper-realistic sword fight, especially against something climactic like a fight between hero and villain, would only last seconds. However, this isn't an excuse to not incorporate HEMA techniques into a fight scene.
The main thing with sword fights is that, when done properly, the have a certain rhythm to them. If you can maintain that rhythm, whilst similarly executing techniques available to you in books, you're going to get the best of both worlds.
@@plasmathunderdx truly authentic swordsmanship doesn't last very long, true. However, you can still make a (slightly less) realistic sword fight with HEMA techniques and still have it last as long as you wish. Look up Adorea Olomouc on CZcams. They utilize HEMA for stage combat. Great stuff.

I find these videos very helpful, thank you. However, 1:48 would be more helpful if the correct form was compared via split screen.

Do note-sometimes the clubs listed there aren't as active as you might think-it's best to see if you can contact them beforehand(especially if you have to drive a few hours to get there). 'The HEMA Alliance' facebook group is usually a good way to check if you can't find them otherwise.
That being said a loooot can be done through solo practice or working with an interested friend but even one class per few weeks or months or going to an event once per year can do a lot for your learning of HEMA :)

the hanging parry is down a lot of different ways for sure. in fma it's the same but some weird choices pop up like "tactical machete/knife experts" use it as a straight block on a foot or shorter blade.

Maybe in one video you guys could cover the fundamental moves of sword fighting, some basic variations, and what exactly they are. (Like parries, dodges, thrusts, strike etc.) And maybe show some Hollywood moves that wouldn't work to give a reference point of sorts.

Just subrcibed. Whilst i am more into Asian Martial Art (Weng Chun Kung Fu) i already see alot of parallels in the defense techniques between HEMA and fights without weapons. In Weng Chun your aim is also not to push against an attack, but most times to somehow roll around the opponents hand/arm/leg and also to use the opponents force for your counterattack.

I saw you've commented already that you are working to fix audio issues for the future but I just wanted to pitch in that aside from being low volume, for me the main issue was the echo from the room you are in. I understand that that is the logical place to demonstrate things, so if you can't change the location (or have a better directional mic), I think subtitles at the bottom could be a good idea. Anyways, good content so far, keep it up!
+subbss Subtitles are currently being added to our backlog before we start recording with new microphones. We may keep the subtitles for newly recorded ones, but it depends on how much time our video editor has. We'll see!

hanging parries are pretty good with sword with more encompassing hand gaurds

I was thinking about sports training gear and movie tights (Robin Hood Green) or medieval Italian Striped tights, two color leg tights could be fun.

Hi Blood and Iron, I do Viking Re-enactment in Australia and I fight with a shield and sword, I was wondering if you could do a couple of things for me, could you find the time to do a video on shield and sword, or just single sword, and could you point me in a good direction to finding a well balanced single handed sword, the closer to a type X the better. I look forward to watching your videos as i hope they'll help my meager combat skills.

I remember hearing from a couple of historical fencing guys that one should always block with the flat of the blade, but in these videos I see you guys blocking with the edge a number of times. So what's the dealio?

There was a time when many people promoted the myth that you must parry with the flat to avoid damaging the edge of your sword. Most of the HEMA community has moved on to realize that it is a situational choice, based on the facts that:
1) Your life is more important than a chip in your blade, so it is more important to do what is the most effective given the circumstances.
2) It explicitly tells us to meet swords edge on edge in many historical documents.

Wouldn't it be more efficient to do a deflectionary parry (if that's a word)? Where you parry with the flat at an angle and the momentum of the blade makes it slide off, so a counterattack is easier to pull off?

The best way to parry or stop a blow is to meet it before it is in full force.
How could you counter a hanging parry effectively?
do they have a video to deflect an amateur's attack where they swing aimlessly?
Elie Chan attacks like those usually leave big openings. Look for openings to strike and simply back off with some footwork if there aren't any and let them waste time. I they are able to catch up to you beating their blade away can be effective too.
Would the same techniques you teach with the longswords you use work with a hand-and-a-half sword? Aren't they both technically longswords?

Longsword and Hand-and-a-half sword are both pieces of modern terminology. In most historical fencing manuals they simply refer to them as swords. And a massive amount of overlap happens even between using a single handed and a two handed sword.
The reason we kept switching between two handed and single handed swords was to show how this has less to do with the type of sword, and is more about some fundamental principles for all weapons.

so "deflecting" an attack is better than straight up parry it right? at least if you are able to deflect it that is.

Hmm let me differentiate. It doesn't work if you attack from an angle. It may work if you move in line. Which you should not.

Why are you HEMA guys always trying to create some weird new names? It's but a parry number 6 in modern therminology. Video is cool tho
