In my home (no kids) , I have a five-step rule. A self-defense capability within five steps. Home invasions occur so fast, I don't want to have to run to a separate room. Nicely done sir, thank you. Stay safe.

That’s crazy. At home, i have a pistol on me ALL THE TIME. Especially when i feel most vulnerable like taking a dump. Dont need it holstered up all the time, the P365 fits in my pockets. Only when i shower is it within reach.

This is how I trained my kids. They treated guns like lamps - hardly paid attention to them but they knew how to use them.
To each his own. Green Tips are probably the last round I would pick for home defense, because of their extremely high likelihood of over-penetration. Unless you live on an isolated ranch, those rounds will pass thru your target, any interior and exterior walls and possibly into a neighbor’s home.

Yeah, I saw the ballistic impacts of M855, it seems to be less effective than M193, at least against someone without a plates.

This is absolutely a complete stretch by the time a green tip goes through a human (assuming it doesn’t hit any bones) through two layers of drywall and siding (assuming it misses the stud) through your neighbors siding and drywall (Same assumption) and misses any other common hon obstructions (desks, dressers, closets, furniture ect… it would be completely useless. Ballistic information is a controlled test. Trajectory would indeed change long before it got to a human or pet.
Every man should do what he feels is best for his situation. I personally keep hollow points in my AR for home defense. I have kids in every direction in my house. Steel tips will definitely go completely through the interior of my brick house. I keep my AR, 12 guage and Glock in certain places of my home. Home invasions are becoming increasingly more frequent and usually have more than one person. My family looks to me for protection. I take it very seriously. Awesome video/ channel. James from Texas.

Couple things I’d recommend.
1st I’d run a otm or hollow point in your rifle to prevent over penetration especially in a house.
2nd it wouldn’t be a bad idea to just load a couple more mags to store in the ammo can or at minimum stripper clips and a speed loader.
3rd ditch the steel plates and upgrade to a ceramic plate. Much more effective and preventing spalling. RMA 1155 or Highcom 4sas7 are great budget lvl 4 options.

I have been told to always wear my plate carrier when I shoot to get used to it. I didn't really believe them but when I dropped my magazine I felt really awkward trying to pick it up.
Solid setup, but i got some advice on some little things that would be good improvements. You shouldnt run green tip for home defense, that round is designed for light barrier penetration. You'll gain no increased effect on target and will only increase the chance of over penetration. Id also recomend practicing keeping the light off except for when you are using it to check a specific dark spot or target id.
So True! You don't want to shoot thru the wall and hit grandma next door, and the flashlight lets the bad guy know where you are and where to shoot first!

My first line of defense at home is my Beretta 92 f/s backed up by my 686 + .357 bsfore I can reach my long guns. My children like you were trained growing up to respect firearms. Besides my two handguns beside my night table, I have an extra Firestar .40 hidden in the living room that every member of the family knows. Thank you for the good poiners that make sense.

I agree 100% on your theory of keeping a gun ready to go, but a good quality gun safe is good for house fires, a few years back my father had a fire and lost some family heirloom because he kept his guns a wooden cabinet
My only question is why use green tips as defensive ammo for home defense? M193 (55gr 5.56) would be a much better option for home defense all around.

I love the set up, mine is very similar. Some advice about patches, let’s say you did use your weapon in self defense or you had on your plate carrier. Unfortunately the punisher logo has become sort of a “aggressor” patch. I have an AR mag with the same design, and I was told by law enforcement guys that they will use that logo against in you court.. but at the same time it’s your kit do whatever you want, stay strapped.

Your setup is almost identical to mine. And I am of the same philosophy a gun is no good if it's locked in a safe during a home invasion in the middle of the night. Thank you so much for posting because I've had friends rag on me for not keeping my guns locked up.

My first lesson of gun safety was when my dad took me out into the woods and blew a chipmunks head off right in front of me. He told me, you mess around with guns - that could be you or someone you love. Never once in my childhood did I ever think to mess with his firearms that were not locked up. I always knew in the back of my head that if I absolutely had to protect myself I could, and that was comforting considering I had enough knowledge to protect myself. God bless and stay safe.
I’m with ya on having weapons around you 24/7. I would recommend that the rounds in the ammo can be loaded into magazines if you bug out with them and it’s real your adrenaline will be off the charts you most likely not be able to keep track of your mags especially if you are on the move your coordination will be messed up so load the loose rounds in mags you will not be able to call a time out to load them.
I live in the south and for some ridiculous reason we are taught that our brothers in the north are anti gun,it is a good thing to know that with people like you still recognize our 2nd amendment rights.

Same here in Texas. My boys would defend their mother if I wasn't home. They are grown now and training their kids. I keep my G19 on the night stand. It has a light on it. Also on the night stand is a short Glock PDW with a light and red dot with 33 rounds of Underwood +p+. I stay away from rifle calibers because of the massive blast, for home defense.

I have friends who want to leave Colorado for what they believe is more political freedom in Texas. Their children go to public school where they are trained in the use of bow & arrow & rifles. I live in the Permian Basin and seriously doubt if these pc's I am surrounded by would make this available. Most would piss their pants. I am surrounded by man camps for illegals. No politician will do a damned thing to help us. And forget the sheriffs & police! How is East Texas?

Just a tip, for self defense, green tips actually have less stopping power, but standard fmj’s will fragment in the body. Best self defense round is a normal 55 grain 5.56

Great video. I gave up keeping my hand gun in a safe or lock box quite a while ago. keep it on a magnet mount on my bedframe now.
One thing I would suggest is remote control lighting. I purchased a set of 6 remote controlled outlets with dual transmitters from Amazon really cheap and strategically located them throughout the house. They work great and be sure to test them often.

Teach the kids, yes! My son is 8 with autism. He calls all firearms tools. He calls my tools, like my power drill, tools. He knows not to touch them without permission. I clean my firearms around him, no ammunition in the room, and show him things. He likes to look inside & inventory the safe. I keep one loaded handgun on me at all times. My wife does the same. Another is in the bedside quick access safe. We cover scenarios where that may not be enough and practice accordingly. But sh*t happens. I’m not leaving multiply firearms loaded and unlocked. Besides MI just passed laws on safe storage.

Some people won't believe this but I am just shy of 60 years old and when I was in the 5th grade we were taught gun saftey and hunting saftey in elementary school and when you passes the written test we went on a field trip to the gun range to do a little shooting. There was also a class that taught farm tractor saftey in the same grade and you were issued a tractor license to drive on the road with the farm tractor if you passed.
I'm 40. I remember being able to bring our Bows on the bus for show and tell. Had tractor driving class Freshman year lol

Hi from the UK here. Big gun enthusiast but sadly we aren't allowed guns for home defense. So my best option is a top of the range alarm and camera system. Then keeping a metal baseball bat next to my bedside for a weapon which technically you aren't even allowed to do I don't think lol

Dude. load that loose ammunition that’s up in the ammo can with some magazines , and then put the loaded magazines back into the ammo. That way if you have to run and gun you got a handy way to grab some extra already loaded magazines. Plus what you have on the plate carrier , sort of like little cachet…Because all of this madness is going on in the world today plus this country you never know….
You aint lying, I got like 30 plus mags loaded because you never know lol. Hopefully, I only use them at the range. Hope for the best, but expect the worst :)

Safes are for storing your guns when you go away from home and you're not bringing them with you, if you're at home sitting in your room you should not have them in the safe
The only difference in my setup is my flashlight on the rifle is red so i dont screw up my night vision. Other than that, its basically the same. Started teaching my son at 7 years old and he has his own now.

I have 2 big firearm vaults but I have a firearm staged and ready in every room of the house but not in plain sight for an intruder to see. I also have a camera on every corner of the house 8 cameras total, floodlights with motion sensors and reinforced doors & frames. I have an alarm system too but it's only used when nobody is home.
I always like the idea of having a canine if they start barking at night that can buy you some extra valuable time to get your shit
I highly recommend sometime of camo furniture with easy access. Use magnets to attach them under a darker colored background. So any intruder doesn’t see them and take them. It takes 20 seconds to jump in and out. I always try to stay ready and at least have a chance to fight back. 👍🏼

Yes to keeping your guns not in a safe. That can change if you have kids. I don’t think it’s smart to keep a round in the chamber of the AR, it’s not clear if you’re doing that or not. Also, don’t use your weapon mounted light to check out a noise, get another flashlight, you can still sling on your rifle. As you said, you trained to take the safety off when you raise the rifle.. so, if you have it at 45 degrees with the light on, what happens when you see a movement that the flashlight didn’t help you identify, because it’s pointed toward the ground? You raise the weapon to see what it is, and you take your safety off because that’s how you trained… so now you’re pointing the rifle at the movement, with the safety off, before you actually know what you’re looking at.. which is not good. Also.. why green tips? They’re good for going through walls and other barriers like bodies.. that’s probably the last thing you want inside your home. Since you’re not using a suppressor.. it’s also going to be loud as hell.. but you could use frangible ammo since you aren’t using a suppressor.. it’ll dump all of its energy in the target, and not go through barriers nearly as much as other types of rounds.
Kids are the reason forsure. Children are curious regardless of how much you teach them I think I rather be safe than sorry

I keep my handgun in a biometric nightstand quick-access safe, long guns in the safe so they don’t get stolen while I’m out and about.

Very similar to my setup except my Glock 19 Gen 5 sits on my nightstand and my Springfield Saint Victor 15 sits in the same corner as you have your M&P 15. Both loaded and ready to go. Keep up the good work 💪

Dont judge but for those on a limited budget a Taurus G3/G3c and a Maverick 88 18.5" 12 guage would be a good starter home defense setup for $400-500 depending on sales and rebates
Shield 9mm and Remington magpul tactical 870. Have gone back and forth between the shotty and my ar-15 and settled with the 12 gauge loaded with #4 buck.
Perfect! Having kids trained at young age is extremely important because trouble doesn't see age or gender. It just comes, you gotta be prepared and trained.
Green tip? Hollow point is best, a soft tip. Like federal premium bonded soft point would be ideal and effective.. green tip could cause collateral damage by passing thru. Nice video and I keep mine loaded and on the table. No kids running around at home. So makes sense. I also keep a .300 blackout subsonic with sandman-s silencer. Loaded but not one in chamber for the rifle. Perhaps I should.

When my kids were really little I used to use one of those finger print lock boxes, worked out pretty well for my handgun.
Then when my kids were about 9-10 I taught them about firearm safety and how to handle one. One of the first things I taught my kids was how to clear a weapon. That way if they found a gun outside in the bushes or something, the first thing they would do is clear the weapon 👍🏽 the more I taught them, the more they became less curious. now when I get a new firearm…. They are just like “oh you got another one dad” and they go about their business 😂 my kids know more about gun safety than most adults I see.
I think teaching children at a young age about gun safety is a must! But that’s just my household.
As for a big safe…. I got one for when me and my family is not home, say on vacation or something. Gives me that extra piece of mind of security over the home alarm. 💯☑️

I do lock up most my guns so they don’t get stolen but I do keep a 12 gauge pump loaded by the bed and a Taurus g3 with light mounted and a 17 round mag in it on the bed side table it is cambered and safety on
I agree with you 100 percent. The only reason I have a safe is to keep them from being stolen if someone were break into my home. I don't have any kids so I don't have worry about that.

When we consider the average deadly force encounter lasts anywhere from 3 to 5 seconds that doesn't give you much time to open a safe does it?
ngl just a small tip, instead of using black electric tape, just use the green colour one and mark your mag that way, to know the tip colour of ur bullets, it's just easier
The main reason you wanna lock your guns up is for if someone breaks in while you're not at home. You can put an eye bolt in a wall stud and cable a pistol safe to it so it's more difficult to simply take the whole safe (they also make larger quick access safes for long guns, since your pistol looks to be a CCW). As for kids, it's usually younger ones under 10 that people are worried about leaving loaded guns around, since they can't/don't know how to treat guns.
And as other people have already mentioned, green tip is the absolute worst ammo you could use for HD. The regular Winchester you already have would be a significant improvement.
Magnets for the wall are great! I have my 9mm and an extra clip on one magnet. Makes it easier to hide and access.
Your pistol does have a safety. In fact multiple safeties. I believe you meant to say it doesn’t have an external manual safety. IMHO, there is no reason for a trained individual to carry a pistol with an external manual safety. During the 1990s the agency I worked for carried pistols with manual safeties and I can tell you multiple stories of during training, agents pulled a dead trigger due to the manual safety accidentally getting engaged. Modern striker fired pistols will not fire without you pulling the trigger. Now, in the case of your rifle, you are correct. USE THE SAFETY. Rifles don’t have drop safeties or firing pin blocks. I agree 💯 on training your kids. My kids were trained before they were 10 so they didn’t feel the need to want to handle any firearms out of curiosity. Good job.

I know most people use an AR15 for home defense but I prefer a pcc/AR9 loaded with 124 grain federal hst.
Less penetration through walls and the blast is way less concussive than ar15 shot indoors.
I ALWAYS have my gun with a round in the chamber and an extra mag within arms reach of my bed when I’m sleeping as well as a flashlight and a knife. Shouldn’t take me more than 3 seconds to have it in my hand and out the bedroom door to clear the house. Stay safe ✌️
There should be a firearm on every level of the home imo…I’d probably hide the handgun in another strategic spot of the house (unless you have more guns you didn’t show).
An empty unloaded firearm is only a paperweight. Magazines as well as the firearms are designed to be loaded and ready to go.
Living in the mountains requires firearms to protect yourself from wild animals more than some home invaders. New Hampshire is safe compared to some other parts of the US.

The safety on an AR is so ergonomic that it doesn’t really slow you down at all. I agree with you about using the safety on your rifle if you keep a round chambered as it doesn’t have anything besides the manual safety.
In some countries like Canada there are no such thing as "home defense" and if you shoot an intruder at 3am inside of your home.. you are the one who ends up in handcuffs and on your way to prison.
People can only use guns lawfully in Canada for hunting and recreational shooting.. and there is no such thing as buying a gun for "self defense" or for "home protection" - there are no concealed carry/open carry laws for gun owners in Canada.
I know.. it sounds crazy.. but these are the facts.
They also have what they call "safe storage laws" where your firearms MUST be locked up and secured at all times in your home.. and if you violate ANY of these laws, not only do you face going to prison and large fines.. but ALL of your firearms and ammunitions will be seized and confiscated and you will be stripped of your "firearm ownership privileges" and banned for life from ever buying and owning firearms ever again.
In Canada.. they have no Constitution or 2nd Amendment.. owning a firearm is NOT a right.. it is a 'privilege" that a person is only granted if they can qualify and earn it.. and that 'privilege can be stripped and taken away from you at their discretion.
They can come in and take ALL of your firearms just over something like a trumped up domestic violence charge because you "grabbed" your wife.. when really.. it was your wife who was out of control and trying to hit you.. and you were just defending yourself.
I keep my pistol close to my bed if not in the bed with me. Also keep a Stevens 320 20 gauge cruiser ready hanging in the closet for the wife and daughters. The 12 gauge stays with me in cruiser ready status. We keep protection on all 3 levels of the home in various areas.

Mine are at the ready! I’ve taught both of my daughters how to handle and shoot my hand guns, rifles and shotgun!
I have kids at home so it’s not safe to leaving around, but I have handgun in a very near inside a safe and an ar in the wall ready to use and high enough that my children never will get it, always take to the safe when I’m not in the house, and I always carry one handgun as well.
I was raised with my dad leaving guns around, he trained me at a suuuper young age. never had any issue. I think every kid should be raised like that
Yeah I was lucky enough to have hunting/fishing/outdoor living and training as a child and guns were always just a ways and means to eat and connect to our roots. I knew and fully understood the power and responsibility of firearms at a young age. I feel most people don't really get proper opportunity of exposure to the realities of guns, and it's too late once you have to pull the trigger. Also, it's a massive responsibility to have the daily attention span towards handling quickly available firearms, especially in public situations.

Most people don't realize that there are two classes of weapons: "staged" and "stored." "Stored" is generally referring to a weapon that is unloaded and put away because it isn't intended for immediate use. "Staged" weapons ARE loaded and kept CLOSE by for immediate use...such as when a perp is breaking into your home...or your refrigerator...

Are people missing the point of gun safes? They're supposed to protect your guns while you are away from the home. Your primary home defense gun should not be in the safe while you're home.
Always have a loaded gun in each room of my house. ( I live alone no small children)

But, that only applies to those who already understand about the Golden Rule of Gun Safety, or how to treat the gun, wisely.

I have no children so I have several guns in stratigic places. I wear one as soon as I get up in the AM and there are guns in many locations less than a few steps away. No intruders in my home.
In Michigan, as of feb 14 if you have children in your home, its a felony to have guns not locked in a safe with a trigger lock!
