    There are many guitar books that have "House Of The Rising Sun" listed as a beginner song. The chord changes are way too fast for a beginner and the correct strumming is tricky even for an intermediate player. I'm glad to hear someone finally point that out.

    No wrist strumming promotes stiffness which is bad. It is best to remain as lose as possible with as little movement as possible which can include both wrist and arm movement. It is best to just focus on not holding any muscle tight and the movement feeling good.

  • @MrJahvah
    @MrJahvah Před 8 lety +605

    No offense, but I completely disagree w the first two. Especially # 2! Resting your palm on the guitar top will muffle the vibration of the sound board giving you a smaller sound and all around inhibit your movements. I used to like to touch the pick guard with my pinky when I pick but am doing away w that as well. And to a certain extant, yes you strum w the elbow, but the wrist is NOT off grounds. I've been doing it for 20 yrs and don't have issues. In fact, if your going for speed metal, all 'down strokes' (Master of Puppets) you do NOT want to use your elbow. Just learn how to hold your wrist properly and you'll have no problems. Peace!

    @465marko Před 7 lety +41

    I have to disagree with that last point. First of all, wonderwall and house of the rising sun are two of the easiest songs out there. Playing songs you know is the key thing that keeps people interested. I still get a buzz out of it 18 years later. So unless the songs are so ridiculously difficult that attempting them will confuse you, or set you back (I just can't see it - the worst that can happen is you give up trying that song because it's too hard), then go for it.
    You'll find out pretty quickly whether it's too hard for you or not. And in any case, the challenge is what improves people. There's no reason to pick up bad habits this way more than playing anything else.
    I just don't like the attitude of "don't even attempt" some songs. For some people, just playing the first chord of their favourite song - is enough to give them a kick and keep them interested. It's the only reason people learn guitar in the first place, and the only reason they keep playing. It doesn't have to be all boring stuff.

    • @Bucboy1001
      @Bucboy1001 Před 7 lety +7

      For a beginner Wonderwall is much more difficult than you would think. Most can play the general idea of it, but the strumming pattern is a little tricky and not something that a beginner will master until later. In fact, many covers on CZcams have intermediate players who don't have the strumming pattern down. As a massive Oasis fan, I would know.
      And I completely agree that beginners should learn songs they like, because that's what keeps it interesting and is usually the reason they picked up a guitar in the first place. The same applied to me when I first started - I never tried to learn a nursery rhyme or scale. I bought an Oasis chord book and went to town.

      If you listened to what he said, He didn't say that new players could NOT play them, he said you were not doing yourself any favours by not learning the basics first (and thus easier songs) learning the basics first will help you learn more difficult songs faster and efficiently, I'd like to see someone play snow (hey oh) by RHCP without learning proper picking, alternate picking, chords and chord changes, etc. That's the point he was trying to make.

  • @Noone-of-your-Business

    I have to disagree on the first one: I learnt to strum "from the wrist", i.e. by rotating the lower arm from someone who has studied classic guitar, and it gives me better control over the right hand movement than using my elbow. And I have *never* experienced carpal tunnel porblems because of it. Also, it allows for a much tighter grip on my lute guitar, which is a bitch to hold with its rounded body.
    #3: don't panic. That just comes with practise, without giving it any thought whatsoever. I know that's how it worked for me. And practise takes time. Don't try to rush what needs time.

    Hey, Andy, I've been learning from you for a month now. Thanks for your lessions, you do it in an easy and slow way from which we can pick it up nicely. Nevertheless, got a one question. We cannot place our required fingers in some or let's say many chords at a time in strings. For ex, in G major, c major, D major, it goes slowly one by one. Is that a problem or we should learn to place fingers at a time? Doesn't it come with a time? If Andy doesn't reply, anyone here can, thanks in advance 🙂

      My question is: what if you prefer to play without a pick? i just strum with my thumb (and fingers) most times, because it is quieter, and just has a more pleasant overall sound. If I had to play with a pick all the time, I would eventually stop playing guitar, because it is so loud and harsh. However, while I have never noticed myself really flicking my wrist, what is the best way to play in the style I prefer?

      i would try a lighter gauge pick. and when strumming with a pick, angle it a bit so it glides down the strings smoothly. if you hold it dead at 180, it's going to slam the strings and that's the cause of the harsh sounds
