  • Many of you asked for a more in-depth follow up to our original introduction video of this '59 inspired stunner from Epiphone last year. Our original batch sold out so quickly, we simply didn't have the chance to dig deeper! However, we've recently received a second shipment, this time comprising of over 50 guitars, and we thought it'd be the right time to sit down and take a closer look.
Today, Jack expands on some first impressions, walks you through a variety of classic LP tones, and dishes a little insight as to how these may compare to their Gibson USA & Custom Shop brethren, some of which command a 10x price tag.
If you'd like more information on these Epiphones, as well as the ability to pick your own exact guitar from our inventory, then click the links below to head to our website.

The 59’ won’t be. I’m not saying it’s a Strat or Tele but if you toggle in the middle and play with the tone you can get a lot of funk and blues sounds. Most players overlook what volume and tone can do. So many sounds man. Jimmy Page did it for years coming from a Tele and convert to a Les Paul.

Its very hard to say anything truly bad about either one but this one stays in tune better for me and is just much less of a fight to get the tones I want from it. For me this Epiphone model is the perfect Les Paul. I am a Telecaster addict and a Fender guy in general but I considered buying a Les Paul to make my collection complete. Before Epiphone introduced this model, their Les Paul models weren't appealing to me. They're good but I didn't feel anything, and to pay 600ish € just to have a Les Paul wasn't worth it, it wasn't persuasive enough. The Gibson models weren't appealing either because of the price tag. When I learned about this Epiphone model the whole thing changed for me somehow. Affordable, good quality, a nod to history, something "special". Or in other words: It had enough persuasive power to drag me - as a Tele guy - in the Les Paul world, even at a higher price point in terms of Epiphone models. And I really love it, didn't regret my purchase for one second! So, these are my two cents. And to you, Sir: Thanks for the great video!

    • @michaelheller8841

I’ve been a Gibson Les Paul guy for a long long time. I got the 59’ Epi and it’s better than some standards I’ve owned and played lol. At $800 it’s a steal. Your a Tele guy? I can fully understand that. The past few months I have purchased 3 Tele’s. The first one was a cheap Fender Tele modern plus Chinese but for only $400 used. I love the guitar for sure but the humbucker in the bridge doesn’t make it a real Tele IMO. I wanted that fat classic single Tele Bridge pickup, you know, a real Tele. I then purchased a Jimmy Page Mirror Telecaster and fell totally in love with it. Worth it every penny. So much so that I had to purchase the Dragon Jimmy Page one. The Dragon is MIM but who cares it honks, growls; and makes me hybrid pick more. A Tele to me now is just as good as a Les Paul and they each do their own thing. It took me 35 years to say that lol.

In other words,..No matter who the player may be or what their style or habits are, those things are their own and he or she is looking for equipment to satisfy the specific tone that they want. Using this UNCONVENTIONAL arrangement results in 3 much more diverse sounds, particularly in the middle position where you can get some fantastic "Hollow Chirp" from phase cancellation once you lower that neck Burstbucker 3

This guitar can do everything! Seriously the Burstbuckers are just perfect on this guitar and you can play all jazz/blues/rock/reggae type of music but there is more... I'm a big metalhead and this guitar can do it very easily, and that's where the Les Paul was well loved back in time! I mean if you think about the guitarists in the late 70's and start of the 80's, if they wanted a guitar that can handle high gain the Les Paul was one of the best contenders! Of course it was the start of the SuperStrat era but it was pretty new and a lot of second hand Les Paul was available in music stores and pawn shops, so for a bunch of guys it was pretty obvious to go with something they knew as a good and adapted instrument...

      1. burstbuckers 1/2 (for LP standard, Warren Haynes preference, more like original PAF spec)
      2. burst buckers 2/3 (hotter, so a bit less clarity than 1/2)
      3. classic 57
      4. 490 R/T (hotter than '57 classic)
I'm not a fan of modern Gibson pickups, older Gibson P-90 and humbucking pups sound better to me. I have a set of Dave Stephens (SDpickups) "famous" (getting there) humbuckers in my 1999 LP Special, and they sound much better than the stock 490's, and in another guitar they sounded far better than the '57 classics. Stephen's P-90 set sounds much better than the stock Gibson P-90 pups in my 2000 LP Standard. Because I have the two LP Specials, I've been holding off on buying an LP Standard for years - decades even. Does the maple cap really make that much improvement in tone, making it worth the extra expense and weight...? I prefer all mahogany body guitars to maple caps, on most models that have the option. Les Paul himself didn't like having a maple cap, why his original LP Custom was an all mahogany body, including the carved mahogany cap. That said, I'm going to try one of Epiphone's '59 Les Paul standards locally (they have FOUR of the cherry bursts, and they don't look like regular cherry bursts, rather they are mostly cherry, with just a little yellow burst in the middle, which looks better to me than the usual larger yellow area in the middle. One of them is only 8.5 pounds, and they are SOLID mahogany bodies, with no weight relief...?! I'll go see if it calls my name........!

I own the 59’ and I can say for sure, it’s the best quality and steal Epiphone ever came out with. All the electronics are Gibson. It’s better than the Tributes and studio Les Pauls IMO. Is it better than a Standard? In some ways no. Is the standard $1700 better? I’m having trouble believing that.

I've had my Epi 59 LP for about 2 months Tone wise no complaints. Feel wise no complaints as I prefer a beefier 59 style neck profile and most guitar manufacturers tend to cater to a market demanding thinner profiles. Materials are top notch. Fit and finish, well....the fit was fine but there was some black paint bleed onto the binding up past the 12 fret. So you might say QC is still lower than par. The fretboard is dark though it is Laurel (looks like Rosewood) as I've seen lighter fretboards on the cherry burst models. Compared to my 2018 Traditional LP, the Epi has its own voice, different, not necessarily better or worse. The Gibson has a bit more midrange, the Epi more highs that sound great through the neck pick up. Great value for the price and definitely a gigging ax if you want to pamper your Gibson.
The guitar sound great running through that Fillmore head.

I highly recommend this '59 Epiphone to anyone chasing vintage Les Paul tone and can't afford to refinance thier home! I have the ASFB and the ADCB. The neck carve on these is the spec that drew me in. It's very comfortable and I find myself playing better and more often on them. The BB 2+3 pups, switchcraft toggle+jack, cts pots, 50s hand wired,Graphtech nut and Lifton style hardcase for $799 is alotta bang for your buck!

@@andrewjeff It's not a big huge baseball bat neck carve. If your seriously considering the '59 I'd act now. I really liked that guitars neck but the '59s carve is much better still.

I love mine and it's neither one of these finishes! I got it because it had this lesser known finish, called Southern Burst. It looks like something in between these two, the Dark Burst, and the Cherry. It's one of the best Epi's I've ever had. The Southern Burst is like the Dark Burst, but with a brown border instead of the black.

I own 3. Two finishes shown in video plus southern fade. I also have a Gibson 1959 conversion. These Epi’s are almost equal in tone. One positive difference is the Epi’s produce a slightly more ‘woody’ tone like real ‘59s! I should mention that Epiphone uses D’Addario NYXT STRINGS ON THESE. they’re great strings- feel and tone- which may contribute to the woody tone. FYI: My comparison was performed using 2 Marshall amp types and also using a video on a real vintage 1959 LP from songbirds museum going thru the same Marshall amp. It seems to me that one thing that can never b equal is, as Joe Walsh alluded to regarding music and players, the ‘Mo-Jo’ is not there...But after near 60 years of playing- I am also old...and genuine mojo cost$$$!

Awesome review and great guitar and playing. I tried the 59 Epiphone yesterday at guitar center. They have a used one in lemon burst for 699. I thought it played good and sounded good but compared to my old Gibson 50s standard there really is not much comparison. My Gibson feels and sounds so so much better. I honestly was hoping for more out of the Epiphone. I found the epi too be much more thinner sounding and feels like a toy compared to my old Gibson. In all fairness too the 59 my LP is a premium plus made in the original factory and has a Brazilian rosewood fretboard. So the indian laurel with fake pearl inlays just didnt feel right under my fingers in comparison. And like i said for sone reasons in my humble opinion epiphones dont sound near a full or big as Gibson. I feel its due too the overall quality of materials and thats something you pay for right. If I didnt have a Gibson I would probably rock one of these thougn still. Epiphone should have used burstbucker 1 and 2 imo. Also i have owned three gibson studios and a tribute that I paid 500 dollars for each on the used market and honesty every one of those ate this guitars lunch aswell. I hope this comment helps a fellow player. Keep on rockin! 🤘
