And you will always hate the twist at the end. Cause you had to remember it for the rest of your life. And the library scene, I bet you, you can talk about that scene forever.
It's very rare these days to see movie actors that have deep connection and raw chemistry. You don't need words to feel it. I hope Keira and James will be reunited again in a movie that has emotional depth like Atonement.
You always know when u are watching REALLY good actors, because u can really FEEL the love between them-its raw. Look at the way the look at each other from 0:40 to 0:47. The pain in their eyes, the look of longing for each other, the hurt. Wow, these two do an AWESOME job of portraying this. Anyone agree with me?
They couldn't . Robbie couldn't run away. In those time everyone who ran away from war would be killed and searched by his own man. Cecilia also couldn't leave, she could not go back to her family because they let Robbie go to prison and she couldn't have gone to Robbie because Robbie was at war. Cecilia's only place was the hospital.
It's crazy how they always mess with his eye and lip color in his movies. Like c'mon man, he's already an Adonis, you don't really need to play him up anymore than he already naturally is. 😅😍
The way he chokes up at 2:50 thinking of the only moment they had with each other. I can feel that longing, that pain. Thank Good Heavens for beautiful actors like James McAvoy and Keira Knightley ♥️♥️
Dios que mirada de él, que tristeza, belleza, ternura y a la vez pureza en esa mirada llena de lágrimas, magistral la interpretación, amo esta escena de la cafeteria, que historia....
I love how at @1:28 we can see so many raw emotions and yet there are no facial expressions or dialogue; just simple hand movements. I take my hat off to James, he was absolutely fantastic in this movie!
I just watched 'Atonement' last week. I think (going on publicity interviews) Knightly and McEvoy really established a good working relationship and friendship during and after this film and that must have been a big help during the production. It's not just two excellent performances, it's two real people working with each other sympathetically. It is a very emotionally bruising film to put it mildly and I'm sorry I didn't watch this film when it was first released.
Joe wright does an excellent job of portraying the scene and choosing actors to portray it. You get the sense of joy, uneasiness, and the tension of not being able to believe what stands before them after such a long time.
That time, that house, that life, the dress! Everything! Beautiful. The acting is superb, all the more remarkable for the fact that the two leads were friends.

" white-blue house at the sea coast" at the postcard... and they never met again alive... ******************* seeing this first time at cinema thought it very pretty, re-seeing it again, knowing the story's end, made my eyes wet... thanks for uploading. love it.
ok just checking. They pan the camera shot over to the empty table and the women, and I didn't know if it had any connontation or if it was just him breaking the moment.
I have a question. What is robbie staring off at after he says "oh god"? It seems as if he is noticing somethin apart from breaking the oddness of the moment. I am assuming it is the 2 women not having husbands, but I am not really sure. Maybe somebody who has read the book would know.
Y yo, quedaron juntos en el paraiso pq eran almas gemelas, asi lo quise pensar porque es realmente una historia triste, de un amor tan limpio y puro q no pudo ser
That meeting happened. It was their last encounter before the battle of France. Robbie was imprisoned for about 3,5 years. The meeting between Briony and them in their apartment was made up in the book and it supposedly occurred later.
Some people have a harder time with accents. It's a reasonable complaint. She used to live in her family's mansion, but now lives in a tiny apartment and the land lady is horribly nosy. He asked if she kept in touch with her family, she basically said hell no (because they believed a silly little girl over an innocent man with no proof) and that when her brother Leon came to the hospital to see her, she just pushed passed him, basically blew him off completely without a word. He said she doesn't owe him anything (aaawww!!!! What a pure spirit, so concerned for her), so she said she would've seen him everyday in jail if she was allowed. But he didn't know if the strength of his love was only one-sided and if the precious encounter in the library was so fragile and weakly connected, being only important to him more than her, he didn't know if he could handle the heart break of seeing her everyday, knowing she didn't care. ("yes, but!!.... If what we have rests on but a few moments in a library 3-1/2 years ago, then I'm not sure, don't know if ...") (Plus, that love is the only thing carrying him through that massive fallout from his little "sister's" lie that fell entirely on him and through the equally nightmarish and devastating tortures of the massive world war. If that love is blown out, he doesn't know if he could stand anymore of any of it. There's nothing left to possibly save, strengthen, and carry him through - save maybe for his mother, but would that even be strong enough to pull him through it - aalll?! 😔 He wouldn't know if he could survive losing the strongest and most precious thing, and most importantly the most innocent thing he has left in himself to keep him grounded about the truth about himself.) 💖 She basically saves his heart and tells him to come back to her. (Basically confirming that she loves him just as much, and don't be afraid to love her as powerfully as he does. Their love even though shortly encountered, was never weak nor fragile. Not for either of them!) 💖
The only “dream world” that Bry created is after this scene, especially when Bry visited Cee boarding house. I really hate that cause I could die happy if Robbie truly go back to Cee, but that was just another shit that Bry created. So devastating that I have to remember it again.
Ammarah so they did get to have that moment😢
No, she mailed him the postcard. This never happened.
It happened, this is true memory
@movi3srock
Briony didn't make it up. It happened. This is the last time they saw each other though.
So that meeting when she was a Nurse wasn't real? The consummation in the Library was the only affirmation they got of each other?
@@dreamsteddybearsmaster Yes, it was her imagination. The only sexual encounter they had was in the library.

I lol-ed when I saw "Have a Guiness when you're tired" at the back of the bus when he's running.
Now that made me google "London bus Guinness advertisements 1939"... "Guinnes is good for you", and, "Guinness is stronger", fairly accurate. ;)

does this scene happen in the book? or is it another scene briony made up (like the confrontation scene
This scene is not imaginary or fiction.
when Cecilia puts her hand on Robbie's, Why does Robbie remove his hand ?
it pains him
Good idea. I watched it with subtitles........he says "you can't..."
1:53 Did he say "Are you content"? No matter how many times I replay it, I seriously can't catch what exactly it is.

"Any Contact"... may be

@@ravn87 Bravo! But I forget... is this scene real or was the last time they ever saw each other his arrest?

what did robbie say at 1:54??
Winnie A.A oh Good
I think it's "oh god" in scottish accent

after she said, i've got to go back to the hospital in 30 min, what does he say back??
you can't.
And then,....she does....
What is the full story of this? I really don't get it
Did this scene happen in reality or is it part of Briony's novel??
I believe this happened in reality, Briony's later begging for Atonement at Cecilia's is already Briony's phantasy
why does she say 'sorry'?
cause she has to leave him and go back to work. she says she has to be back in 30 mins and he says...YOU CANT.
I always thought she realized she should have planned the meeting differently or something. Maybe it said something like that in the book.
