I remember as a child hallucinating when I was unwell with a fever and sleeping in my parents’ bed. I woke up and, from what I can remember, thought there were snakes on the bed and insects crawling under my skin. I’ve never had any psychosis or similar problems since but I do have a history of schizophrenia in my extended family. I hope psychiatrists manage to create new treatments which have fewer side effects and that all mental health patients get the dignity and respect for autonomy they deserve.
