- Turn your sound up! Ben and Karen Queen, Jeff and Cherie Munro and Normando Caballero, riding through Custer State Park. Buffalo began to stampede toward them. Video taken via GoPro by Ben Queen, photos by Cherie Munro and montage created by Tara Munro.
I've done Sturgis the last 5 years and seen those herds. That one you're showing is spectacular and for anybody who has seen them, that must have scared the bejesus out of you when they started moving as a whole herd like that. Thanks for posting.
I think this is one of the most American videos I'v ever seen!
Wow. When that big one came right at ya it was a little intimidating! Great stuff and thanks!
I experienced my first "Buffalo Jam" a few weeks ago at Yellowstone.
Amazing.
You realize there you are NOT at the top of the food chain.
Bucket list.
Wow. One flick of a bison's horn and everything is pretty much history.
Loved the 'growl" one of the big males did..Wicked video. Thanks for sharing!!
My wife and I got charged on this same stretch of road while returning to our campground late one night I rounded a bend and saw both lanes of traffic blocked by cars with their bright headlights on, blinded, I realized there was a dark mass moving at high speed right at us, tourists trying to photograph bison in the roadway had caused a full on stampede! I quickly turned the car around, and got out of there, with bison charging at full tilt behind, when I got to flatter ground, the herd split, and left the road I pulled somewhat ahead until I was sure that the road had cleared, and the bison calmed down at a safe distance before reversing course and returning to camp at the turn for center lake there were several more bison on the park superintendents lawn but they didn't even glance our way one was the biggest bull I have ever seen and I was happy to get clear of him, the bison don't go over the cattle guard at the entrance to center lake so we were safe back at camp.
My wife has never seen them and we tried and tried to find them. Thanks for the share. I'm going to share it with her now. That had to be a heart stopping moment that after it's all done and over with you had to be happy that you were involved in.... As long as it didn't go bad!
Sturgis is fun and I like watching the Buffalo but not that close especially from the seat of a bike. Great footage!
Was at Custer last week for the rally, saw quite a few also but only one was close. That was great video...thanks for posting! The big boy was looking like he was ready to take you out!
Great video,, especially the still shots. Thank you for posting.
Those are good ole South Dakota Buffalo/Bison. Lived here my entire life and that is what they look like. Hump and all.
WoW . That is an amazing video . Glad you all stayed safe and no one got hurt. .
That was very cool , Happy to see everybody getting along ! lol
Awesome footage!!!
Awesome. I was out there for the rally last summer and saw exactly one buffalo on our trip through the park. Great vid.
OMG, amazing! They were doing their own bike festival :)
Beautiful creatures...
WOW! Amazing! They came this close to us a few yrs ago in Custer State Park, and in Yellowstone National Park where you can just bump them with your hand being on the Harley!!! Glad you are all OK!
Hate to say this, but the impatient Cager started this. Herd Mentality. The forward tatankas knew something was wrong in the back of the herd. You guys are lucky that the one cut off from the rest of the herd didn't got ballistic!
the biggest of them all, I thought will go straight for the camera :-).. hehe..good material, cheers from Canada :P
Omg, amazing - and scary. I even backed up a little when that big boy came right at you ;). Geez
When that full grown bull passed the bike I nearly S--T my pants!
Wow :o !!! What piece ! Impressive show :-) ! What luck to see that (cool bike) !
Glad that they actually never did stampede, though. Y'all were VERY lucky.
LAKOTA NATION FOREVER!
R.I.P RUSSELL MEANS.
This guy sounds like he knows who's boss, and staying out of their way.
The American bison, also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds.....in South Dakota, we call them buffalo and Tatanka Wakan (Sacred Buffalo).
If no one will say it, I will-I'd've crapped my pants.

Almost did just watching this lol. I been to Yellowstone on a bike before and it can be scary if u ain't careful
That's why he got off the bike.
Wow, That Bull is Huge! Buffalo can do some serious damage! The Bulls are very protective of the herd. You all are very Blessed no one got hurt! I would have beed sweating! 😨😲😥
what an amazing sight to see them so upclose ..!!!!
been there done that nothing gets the white knuckle going better than one of those beasts a couple of feet from your bike.
The Bull looks like the size of an elephant! Scary moments.
00:45 OMG that was close!
Which came first? Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been going on for 75 years. The Custer State Park Buffalo Round Up has been going on for 50 years. BTW, I was in the park the same time this video was taken! :-)
AMAZING
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
When they're nearby it's more obvious they can weigh up to a ton each. Talk about pure majesty.
Awesome video!
THAT SNARL WAS TERRIFYING
!
they are soooo cool!
hello!! i like soo much this video, I am from the Argentain, .cheers friends
Thanks for the footage of the bison, they're beautiful animals, doesn't really qualify as a stampede, just doing what they do.
I love bison and I love motorcycles but I wouldn't want to be out there with no protection making noise of the revving of the cycles close to the bison.
Not a good place to be stuck in with a herd of buffalo, especially with calves.
That was awesome
Look sire, the herd is on the move
Wow Bison that's awesome!!!! hope no one hit one of those big boys
AMAZING!
What stampede?? 🦬 walking by quietly.....
we left that morning after a buffalo jam good thing we did
thanks for sharing im sure it was an experience of a life time gotta share
Buffalo is a wild animal, you try and ride beside and harass one and he'll rip you open. The worst thing you can do around one is assume it's temperament is like a cow. Look at all the idiots who get hurt in yellowstone.
Respect... Nice video
Can feel the roam
...RESPECT....
Thta's not a stampede! They were just out for a stroll..
That was a rather slow stampede....kind of reminiscent of O.J. Simpson and his Bronco. lol You know, it was awfully courteous of the buffalo to pretty much stay on their side of the road.
That would be kind of unnerving if you weren't used to biking in that country, but what magnificent animals.
beautiful
Was it Charmin in that bag that you used, or did you decide to use straight Bounty paper towels...
I would've needed some Pampers after a close call like that.
Did the Harley loud engine noise scare them off though? I just have a stock exhaust on my V-Strom 650.
Beautiful! Yet slightly scary huh?
I live in Illinois and I have been there five times
Yeah this sort of thing happens in South Dakota sometimes.
Holy shit those things sound like lions
He was taking the "scenic route" to a staff meeting in Hot Springs
Its all that leather we wear, they've finally had enough!
Just running isn't a stampede. And what was that car doing ?
As stampedes go, this was a Shirley Temple.
live to ride...ride to live!!! Brasil sorocaba são paulo. vila haro!!!
Damn, That would be scary as PUCH!
Who were the geniuses that drove motorcycles with no protection through a state animal park.
Like what? A suit of armor?
A Harley is like another Buffalo, an unknown buffalo, among a herd of them. It makes a loud growling sound, which would put a buffalo in defense mode. A suit of armor wouldn't help, unless it is a car. I am surprised at-least 2 of them were not plowed over.
There were probably 1-2000 bikes on Iron Mountain road that day. Our the bikes were not running, the guy in front of us had his running.
Jeff Munro There's this thing I don't get. This is like the buffalos' only home; I dont get why you would come into their space blasting all that loud sound. It doesn't make sense to me, unless you think they are inanimate objects with no awareness, or some kinna animation.
RedCloudBeechWaveAhh every road in the US goes through a wilderness area. Are you suggesting that cars and bikes should not be allowed to travel through any areas where animals live? This herd is over 10000 head and sometimes they end up on the road just like elk, deer and numerous other animals.
Awesome
It's their area lol,, they don't want pollution in their area I think... 😊
That was exhilarating...
How did you know that buffalo's name was Jeff?
I was wearing a name tag.
People need to respect the wildlife.
Right on.
wow , look they, so huge!
Hear those bison “grumbling”? Sounds like a motorcycle : or a a motorcycle sounds like one bison threatening another.
Where is the stampede?
That’s so strange. Bikers are usually so much louder and aggressive then that hmmm
If you notice the sound of the motorcycle rumbling is very similar to the low rumbling sound that a buffalo makes! No wonder they don't like the motorcycles.
id be shittn my pants if i were sittn on 1 of those bikes.
The driver of the red car almost caused a problem.
Awesome haha I know exactly where this is at xD it's cool to see.
I would have to change my shorts after that BIG one was coming straight at the camera! 😵
Cool vid
"Cute And Cuddly, Boys. Cute And Cuddly." :-P
"Ride Hard"
Ride herd!
That's really scary ,,, *_*
So, can you rollerskate in a buffalo herd?
Baffalo or Bison?
THIS IS AMERICA, I LOVE
what a click bait. no stampede just a few animals trotting along.
Rollin, Rollin, Rollin, keep them doggies moving. I mean Hogs.
Agreed, whats the point in speeding through Custer State Park anyways? you should be enjoying nature not rushing through. i always have the same feeling in Spearfish Canyon.....WHAT IS YOUR HURRY!?!?
What was he doing at the park in a VA staff car ?
There is a VA Hospital in Sturgis the staff car was either taking patients on an outing or it was the visiting nurse traveling through the park to get to patients homes.
he's mad cause he got separated from the heard which means possible fight to death.
