- Clare Pollard, Curator of Japanese Art at the Ashmolean discusses a print by Hiroshige, revealing how the artist’s use of colour and composition provides a striking depiction of figures being caught in a rainstorm. This print is part of the series: One Hundred Famous Series title: Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei). Landscape prints by Hiroshige were among the first Japanese prints to arrive in Europe and America and found their way into the collections of many leading artists, including Manet, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh and Whistler.

I'm learning new things through this video. I'm a big fan of Hiroshige's artwork.
I have an early facsimile of the Tokaido Road series purchased in Japan in the 1920s that is intact in the original fan fold binding that shows the prints in their proper sequence. I always wondered if a museum or collector would value the book as it shows how the series was first presented to the buyer of that series.

The rain expressed only by the black line is very wonderful. However, the carver would have been difficult.
Also, the structure of the bridge is a truss structure that is too strong compared to the load of passersby. It may have been strengthened at that time in preparation for the earthquake.
