Women Arrested for Swimsuits!

- In the early 1900s (and even beyond) modesty laws caused women to be arrested even for wearing swimsuits. #shorts #swimsuits
Unusual and sometimes untouched details on history and culture. And join us to follow our family home renovation. The house is 160-years-old.
Wonder how they would feel about thong bikinis in 2022 lol
You couldn't even call it a swim suit because it barely covers anything. It's as if people were walking a butt naked.
They would faint have you seen that movie where a girl showed her leg and a car stopped immediately lmao
They would do the anime nose bleed thing in IRL lmfao
We would need to get them a casket lol
I think my current women bathing suit has cleavage but it full body it also has mesh panels on the sides to show the waist would kill them
One extreme doesn't justify another. The fact many designs today are meretritious (whorish) is a sad testimony of woman's taste today. Take a look at style and fashion of the 40's. That's when both women and men were truly stylish and fashionable.
Now ppl are on the beach literally showing their cheeks
Yes, butt cheeks! Thongs, to me look like mideval torture devices! Yikes
I don't like seeing women's butt cheeks, swimsuits have gotten to skimpy. Might as well be wearing bandages.
and? like I care about them...its there lifes...
"If they're so into modesty, why are they taking the tape measure up the womans thigh!?"😂
With big smiles on their faces. Especially the last one. 😁
We have tape measures in school.
The hemline on a dress had to be so many inches from the knee
As a way to get free “jollies” as they would call it.
I bet those male officers loved measuring all those ladies! They get to basically grope the women but the women were being indecent.
They didn't grope, they just measured. And if you had someone help you with the measuring before you left the house and you knew what the guidelines were already, you had nothing to worry about.
@@penelopepigeon8505 who want to go to the beach wear a snowsuit?
@@SonotmickeY3626 Try swimming in a Burkini sometime. I tried to post a link here, but I guess the YT Gods didn't like that so you'll have to search for it yourself.
@@penelopepigeon8505 I was referring to the swimsuits in the video, cause they look highly uncomfortable.
The measuring men look low key enjoying their jobs lol
The police are smiling while taking the measurements. Lol. 😂
That’s what I noticed too😂
In Australia in the early 60s I remember the Beach Inspector measuring bikini bottoms, if they weren't regulation size the woman was forced to leave the beach.
Why couldn't they have a lady do the measuring???? Those men should not have been allowed to touch the ladies.
Has always been perplexing as to why humans have such a need to control one another ...😎
White humans
I think no self controle, so the other person is the problem.
@Marygraphy germs, infections, UTIs, and the list goes on and on, that’s besides the embarrassment one feels with everything exposed. So yes there is a NEED for clothing. Animals have fur/feathers for a reason.
@Marygraphy also imagine sitting somewhere butt naked where someone else might’ve sharted, or if a woman’s discharge was on that chair, imagine sitting on that or having to wipe down every place you sit, life would just be unhealthy and uncomfortable.
Edit: I also wanted to add that we don’t lick ourselves clean like most animals. Clothes are part of evolution.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
@@lilyisme7301 that is actually very interesting. of course we only need minimal clothing *some people have no shame good for them-* in terms of like clothing choices I mean
They'd have passed out with what we swim in today... men in Speedos and women in micro bikinis, along with nude beaches ⛱️
As for those police, they were all getting off over measuring those women.
I don't see many men in Speedo suits, but rather long shorts that seem like they are being held up merely by the guys " package".
Those huge swimming suits were also dangerous. All that fabric drags you underwater when wet. And if you get in a rip current, you would drown. And sadly, same with burkini.
Kellerman wasn't just in vaudeville. She was a championship swimmer.
Lol that one police man at the end has the biggest smile 😂
OMG we had them here in Australia too. They were more about the length of the skirt than the arms showing here. But by 1947, the year my grandmother got married, they had gotten over it as I have this amazing photo of Nan in a bikini on bondi beach, the most famous beach in Sydney. I was shocked when i saw the pic and OMG she was HOT!
She right they sure liked there job was all in
YAAAAS! Get it girls would love to tell one of these now very old women good for you thank you for the video we need to see things like this this was only 100 years ago
Men have always been so terrified over a woman’s body it’s hilarious
It’s funny as we still call them swimming costumes (cozzie.) I love my retro swimwear.
now today they are called 'karens'
Summer is here! Ladies, let’s hit the shops and pick out a heavy, itchy wool drowning costume!
There will swim suit police into the 1960s in Australia. Annette Keller was an Australian.
This takes "fashion police" to a whole new level
I’d continue my long career of being arrested.
Muslim women go through it in France now in early 2000’s for the opposite reason!
😱 That's truly despicable. Believe in France🇫🇷 , they're also prohibited from requesting female👩⚕️doctors. Wanting your same sex practitioner is not discriminatory. It's 💯% a safety, comfort, & familiarity issue. It is so dishonoring to women, esp. those vulnerable ones victimized by men. 👨⚖️ How dare they legislate such things 🛃 without thought to respecting personal boundaries or needs.
Not Muslim, but I highly respect the desire for modesty. Also admire the burkini for offering such incredible ☀️UV protection. 😳You get hurled insults in US from extremists when you even express support for them. Not exactly "land of the free" civilized behavior.
🌞Like an idiot, I once used to sizzle & sun bake. 🙏 Hoping to darken skin instead of burn🤦♀️. 👙As a teen, wore a bikini to a local beach⛱️. These teenage boys made what they thought was a friendly overture, but I never wore such a brief costume in public again.
🤗 Not all girls appreciate being the center of attention. It's not pleasant attracting either lustful male or catty female gazes. Frankly, leering & criticism from strangers is rather revolting.
😵💫Plus, normal bathing suits are a modesty hazard swimming 🏊♀️ in rough surf. Used to toss an XL t-shirt over my costume to protect myself from the humiliation of exposure, & also help prevent 3rd degree burn that happened more quickly in the water too.
😉Nowadays, I favor the shade & use a ☂️parasol out & about in the full sun. Might try a burkini one day...
💚 Bridget from Cali ☘️
(using my pal's YT acct)
Now it's the opposite in France, where most towns don't allow the burkini :( so if you're not naked enough, you can't enjoy the beach, make it make sense...
If your grandmother's ever complained about the length of one's hem..... lol. Still, another ridiculous law. SMH.
We still say "swimming costume" in Scotland
Yeah - those policemen looked like they really HATED their jobs....!! 😅😂😂🤣
Sadly, women working in Congress and the Senate still have to comply with modesty laws- they are not allowed to have bare arms 🤦♀️. I don’t know if they are compelled to wear pantyhose. Probably.
Bare arms even in a corporate setting are considered to be in poor taste.
Two points to consider on this dress code:
1. Consider the average age of Congress members, do we really want to see that many spotty batwings in news clips? I'd rather see a nice long-sleeved blouse or pretty jacket.
2. If we are to have true equality between the sexes, men would have to be allowed to show as much skin as women can. So can you imagine your Congressmen with exposed collarbones, short-sleeved shirts, and knee-length pants?
Fair is fair, ladies. We'd also have to make every public area like beaches "shirts required for everyone" or truly topless for everyone, which means we'd have to stop seeing breast tissue as a sexual organ and only as the infant feeding mechanism it is.
Fair is fair. 😉💖✌️
@@penelopepigeon8505 I guess you’re not familiar with Jim Jordan (Rep. Ohio). There are many young women in Congress in addition to clerical workers aides, etc. This isn’t 1920 and it’s not about sexism or ageism (batwings - really?) It’s actually about professionalism and respect.
@@bethknight4436 I'm an older female. I'm allowed to make batwing jokes. 🤣💦
I have them, but I don't show them. 😉
@@penelopepigeon8505 I’m an older female, too, but I don’t think your joke is funny
It so great to see a man enjoying his work!😜
My grandfather used to sit on the curb when he was a boy just so he could get a glimpse of women's ankles (with boots on)
They would have a heart attack if they saw what bathing suits look like nowadays
Clearly these swimsuit police are have nothing better to do. OR they're using their police power to get close to women.
Thanks for sharing! Did not know this?
This just sounds like an excuse for legalized gropping if you ask me. 🤔😉
How we have gone full circle-getting arrested for wearing 'burkhinis' in France! Fascinating history
My former co-worker emigrated from Germany in the ‘60s. She wore a bikini on the beach North of Boston. Police “removed” her from the beach.
We had dress codes in school. They would take a tape measure from the knee to the hemline and it could only be so far from the knee
I feel like the beach police invented school dress codes
I would officially have been a serial killer if I was alive in those days
Questions: Was there any restrictions on men's swimwear?
Yeah, men had to wear long tank tops and actual shorts that came down aways. They weren't allowed to go bare chested until the mid 1930s or so. And no banana hammocks, either.
Back then, the overwhelming majority of people lived in the country and were never subjected to this.
Bring back the fully covering Beachwear! Please Lord
You see the guy measuring from the knee to the top of the “suit?” He had a BIIIG GRIN on his face! Ha! I had a relative who was alive during these times (maybe a little after) and she was so proud of her 19” waist she was a “dish” back in her day, what a beauty. You could tell she had so much fun during those younger years, she was showing me her pictures of her and her friends at the beach and how all the boys were there too, but a separate section for the women and another one for the men. It’s a miracle they got to even meet and get to know one another before marriage back then it would seem. She even said she left her then fiancé for the man she ended up marrying and having kids with. Luv this channel thank you!
Ha! So funny. Wool swimmin' swim suits. We've come a long way. There was a Naked Run in Boulder, CO. for some years. Now they run in underwear.
Annette was a badass! She made her own swimsuit because the women’s ones were impossible to swim in
Ngl if they weren’t wool I’d be all over this. These days swim wear doesn’t cover ish…
Brings me back to my days at private Christian school when the scary little principal would stomp around all morning with a ruler measuring our skirts :l
If they did this now I would have been arrested like a million times cuz whenever I go to the beach I usually wear two-piece
But it’s astounding how the police thought they can control how others choose to dress
Those are so rude that's so freakin messed up
Notice the police are all smiling as well 🤔
Meanwhile me who wears 2 fabrics 3 sizes too small
I'd actually like one of those swimming dresses, only made it of modern swimming material so it's comfortable. I don't like showing that much skin, and have had to really search for swimwear that I am willing to wear.
Maybe someday I can get a bolt of the correct material and sew my own. That would be fun.
Maybe we should bring modesty laws back
See how even the men had their modesty rules, yet it's the women complaining an rebelling and acting as if they are singled out? Lol
One extreme doesn't justify another. The fact many designs today are meretritious (whorish) is a sad testimony of woman's taste now a days. Take a look at the style and fashion of the 1940's. That's when both women and men were truly stylish and fashionable.
What about the modern day amish at the beach.
The real fbi
Life was weird back then. If they could see women today, in music videos.
No women cops in the early 1900s!?
This makes me think......are we going back to these times?
I mean just because you have to enforce every law doesn't mean you have to like it
we didn’t age well
I hate to say it but the The swimming suit Police would be arresting a lot of people for interest in exposure in the stay in Day and age they had to be monitored measuring the swimwear because some of them yes got turn on
You have to admit, we've all been out somewhere like a beach and seen way more of someone, or many someones, than we wanted to! 🙈
Whether it's excessive hairiness, or cellulite dimples, or spider veins, or paunches over banana hammocks.
Cover up, for the love of everything holy, please! My supply of Unsee Juice and Eye Bleach are running low. 😭
i wanna take a modesty police from back then, bring them to now, see what would have happen to him!
I'm glad I never grew up in those eras thank god
*Original Taliban I can see where the Afghan got the inspiration*
And now..look at people
That sign said it all (the boardwalk regulations prohibits sign….
PRO•MEN•ADING
I know PROMENADING doesnt mean pro men ading (or pro men anything ) lol. But the ironic way the word is spelt in a prohibited sign is funny to me. Because lets be honest…. It was all women’s faults back then if a man got aroused looking at us lmfao.
I know times were different back then so I al def not holding it against anyone. Women were just as much to blame for a lot of things too! Their jealousy and envy helped support illogical men at that time! And i do believe at this very moment- roles have reversed on who gets the shittier end of the stick now
It's still happening today tho...look at American school's dress codes, these policies emphasize that girls need to cover up their shoulders and not wear too short of skirts and shorts so that the girls don't distract or interrupt the learning process for the guys
Men have the "shittier end of the stick now" Can you please explain? It's not like men are being told what to do with their bodies as much as women are, such as the whole women shouldn't get abortions, and the assumptions made by society that if a woman shows more skin she is considered to be a slut by society while if men show more skin like being shirtless they aren't really called anything...
Well guess what people now wear bikinis
Fast forward today swimsuits of gone way too far
Modecy police are in Iraq today.
Reminds me of what’s happening now in the states with the Conservative party agenda
I’m from Atlantic City 🤪🤪🤪🤪
Borkini 😎😎🤣🤣🤣
Now people wear thongs and tiny nip covers to the beach
And wet wool is the pits
Laughs in Muslim
I'm pretty sure the Republican party is going to take us back to 1908.
Standards for women have fallen very low. Now they don't want accountability for their choices.
Sounds like the middle school I attended..
Wtf
Lol 😂
Perverts (the poop) in this case
Popo
Seriously?? What a horrible job ❣️❣️lol
🤣🤣🤣
And now their walking naked on beaches streets ect. Woooooooow beyond belief
Like it or not, we were better off back then.
Like it or not, thinking the behavior of those men was better is misogynistic.
The upcoming World Wars were really a blast.
No, the original poster has it right. Modern women walk around with A LOT of skin showing on an every day basis. And at the beach, everything except 3 tiny triangles is showing. That's a lot of pressure on women to expose themselves to be considered "normal" or sexy. So we continuously put ourselves through a living hell of diet, exercise, fake tans, sunscreen, and magic potions to get rid of perfectly normal things like stretch marks, veins, dimples, scars, hair, etc. Then later in life we have a small panic attack over every mole thinking melanoma finally caught up with us.
Forget that! My body is not for strangers on a beach to gawk at, whether the consider me to be attractive or unattractive. I cover damn near everything.
Ah yes racism was so fantastic /sarcasm
@@ferretfanrealnamelogan4404 Bigotry and prejudice have always been with us, are with us still, and will continue to be part of basic human nature until we're either all dead or we all look exactly the same.
You just be the best human you can be; that's all you can do.
🤣😂
Wow some ppl cared about the respect of the lords rules on respect for how women should dress
Modesty is relative to time period and culture. Also, there is also no point in forcing others to follow christian doctrine when they're not christian themselves. Mentalities like this are why nobody likes "Christians".
