What was really memorable is that I was, and probably still am, insane enough to actually try to stand upright and start walking around. I remember for a few years at my fair, my friends and I would milk this ride for all it was worth, flipping ourselves, sitting upright on the wall, etc. Sucks though because last year they started kicking people off the ride if they didn't stay upright. Really sucks because screwing around with being stuck to the wall is literally the entire selling point of the ride. Otherwise, it's just a somewhat uncomfortable experience that leaves you dizzy afterwards.

      Being in the center, his moment of inertia is much lower (recall from intro physics inertia is proportional to distance from center of axis of rotation) and therefore he feels much less torque and tangential velocity/acceleration. Also, since his reference frame is stationary, he doesn't observe any rotational motion. I'm surprised that no one had answered this question in 6 months, its a good one.

The fair was amazing... this ride how ever made me so uncomfortable, I felt the blood rush to my head, my breathing become harder, and It was such a terrible feeling lol. Is anybody going to talk about that operator spinning in the middle?!? I mean…. for HOURS.

  •  Před 5 lety

    For all those who dont know, the force of gravity is many times LESS on the operator in the middle than on you who ride on the outskirts. In addition to this, some rides are now even built where the operator actually doesnt spin anymore, just the sides. Plus, if you pay attention, they actually change out with another guy to give him a break so he can rest and acclimate to regular gravity again. Just so you know.

    • @simonsteele1805
      @simonsteele1805 Před 4 lety

      No gravitrons are built where the operator is on the middle and doesn't spin! If they did, he would be very sick with everything spinning around him at 24rpm (22 on some models) unless he closed his eyes... But then he couldn't keep an eye on the rides. Anyway, the forces on the operator don't cause any discomfort... Just take a bit of getting used to!

    •  Před 4 lety

      @@simonsteele1805 agree. It used to be where they spun along with the riders, but now the middle section doesnt spin

    • @simonsteele1805
      @simonsteele1805 Před 4 lety

      The new gravitrons are no different. Maybe you're thinking of a different ride. It's impossible to watch the safety of the riders if they are moving around you at 24rpm.... Which is a legal requirement. So basically If the operator is in the centre of any gravitron, he spins with the ride.

    • @simonsteele1805
      @simonsteele1805 Před 4 lety

      @ I think we are misunderstanding each other. I am saying the complete ride spins. The operator is inside at the centre and spins on the spot with the ride. This is why when you look at him, it looks as though he Isnt spinning. There are no gravitrons where the ride spins around the operator (which to the riders would appear as though he was spinning on the spot) the entire ride spins... Its very simple. The ride design hasn't changed over the years, apart from cosmetics. Those built by ARM in the UK and Vekoma in the Netherlands are also the same. It is a strange feeling when you operate one... Takes getting used to... Which is why staff sometimes switch. I used to operate one years ago and loved it... I used to do it all day.. No problem.

    The good old days, when the gravitron was really popular you would go in listen to rock music and the operator would hang out and talk to everybody and maybe crack a few jokes, and there will be music playing and you would spend so fast that you actually lift up off the ground and it also spun you so fast where you were unable to get off the wall because of centrifugal force

    I met my friends at the county fair yesterday. One of them was bugging me to go on the Gravitron. I didn't want to go on it because I have a huge phobia of someone puking on me. So my friend went on it himself and I watched him. After the rides ended, I see girls coming off that you would have to bribe to go on those spin my apples. So after my friend and I walked around a little bit and going on other rides, he was still bugging me. Finally we walked by the Gravitron entrance, I finally said, "What the h*ll!" And walked in the Gravitron. Best decision ever.

    I used to love this ride. You ever try to lift your head? I was to scared to hang upside down like my friends.
