- Building a Bentonite Wildlife Pond, in a woodland environment. We hope to attract lots of Wildlife to the pond, particularly in summer when it is hot, as there is not much natural water nearby. As the pond has just been established in November 22, the water is still cloudy from the Bentonite, which is normal, and should clear away with time.
The Pond has now reached almost to its maximum level. When the highest level is reached, i will start work on building a more banked area on both sides, to make it more accessible to Wildlife, and to be able to introduce some plants, to keep the water clean.
I will keep you updated how it is progressing, and hopefully starting to get established!

Nice job brother. I did one but it was a bit different since it was spring fed. But super porous . I used 45 bags of bentonite and had a neighbor use a skid loader to till it into the dirt. It holds good but also has a steady flow of water going into it. Just an observation but I think you should have one side level with the ground in a spot that would allow some run off to enter the pond when it rains, it would add more water than what just lands in the pond.👍🇺🇸

Yes,that's a good point. There is a phase 2 of this video,where i added a shallow area,which also made a larger volume for rain to catch. I like the idea of a runoff too,and if i can incorporate one i will. Best wishes,thanks for your comment

That was enjoyable watching. I was surprised how little amount of Bentonite (seemingly) was needed as it was embedded between the soil. Learnt something there. And lovely to see the wildlife to interact already. Well done 👏
Yes, its quite cost effective really, and seems to be holding out well so far. And if its not sealing properly, you can just sprinkle more in the water, and it will hopefully fill any leaks. Thanks for watching 🙂🙏

@@jd1no Hi. It's a good time to ask,as it has been very dry for a while now,and we have just started to get some heavy rain. The Pond goes down a bit when dry but still keeps a good level in the deep end. And now there is good rain again,it fills up very quickly. The water quality is also good with all the plants which have grown up. So definently pleased with how its looking very natural after a year and a half now,and also keeping its level weather permitting,which is most of the time. Thanks for asking. Looks good, should be plenty deep enough, think wildlife will manage well on those banks.

Yes, its a nice natural environment for it, am looking forward to see how it beds in, and would like to get some water plants, and create a bit more structure to the edges. It will be a work in progress for a while. It would be really great to have you up the wood one day!

What product did you use for the top soil? Could you please provide a link for where you sourced bentonite product as well. Thank you.
Hello. The soil on top was aquatic soil,specially for ponds,and easily available at most garden stores. I dont have the exact company i got the bentonite,but it is the sodium bentonite I used(as a pose to calcium bentonite). The sodium bentonite has a higher swelling capacity,upto 17 times. If you search it online in your area,you should find an outlet. Mine was delivered in a few days. I also recommend the granular form,as a pose to powdered. Thanks for watching 🌲

Oh dear. It should be that if there is water available,the bentonite will soak it up again,and become effective,although im not exactly sure. 🌳

Why in a world are you wearing a mask
They were wearing masking while pouring out bentonite which can be irritating and the standard safety practice is to use mask while handling it. I wear mask while I garden as I am allergic to something and get sick each time. There are people with allergies who like to garden and can use safety precautions. Being safe is not weird.

Hello. Although Bentonite is a natural compound,in its dry form it will swell upto 10 times when in contact with moisture . So any contact with eyes or mouth when applying will cause extreme dryness,which I experienced even with the mask on. Hope that helps.
