    My favorite thing about Arknights is that I have a full team of Fox-based characters.
    I walk them through each event and have fun.
    Then when they reach the limit of their abilities, when it's just not fun to grind down a stage to me, I bring out the big toys and start smashing away at the stages. Still with some Foxes though since Suzuran is still one of the best debuffers around and Chiave is just as good at being a Vanguard in my Fox team as he is in any other team I use.
    I don't even know if I'd still be playing if Arknights didn't have a functional Floof team.
    I have had so many other Gacha games throw in "Tamamo" or "Could be a fox could be a weird dog mascot character" and then call it a day with anything fox-related.
    All this to say Frostleaf's range has been a godsend in the current event for hitting heaters that other Ops need their skill on for. She pretty much sets up every stage on her own for me.

    Some of which include Lowlight, the founder of Arknights and major shareholder in Hypergryph, the developer of Arknights; Hoshieve, another founder and major shareholder of Arknights who's Lowlight's artist friend; and most importantly Hypergryph's board of directors, most of which consist of Lowlight's artist friends.

I thought to myself people still want to follow the efficient route without asking themselves if they really want to follow this route. It's good to see their at least are some people who want to do their own thing instead of following the wider community expectation.

    It is almost like a horoscope, with "archetypes" broad and ambiguous enough that you can relate to every one of them, at least to an extent.
    Sometimes I want to blow up the crap out of enemies by using long range (and usually explosive) stuff. Because explosions and big red numbers are fun.
    Or bring in the squad Heidi or Aurora purely because I like their voices.
    I don't care about meta tier lists, so Surtr still sits at lvl1 (the only lvl1 in my entire roster), while chars like Frostleaf, Amiya, Nearl (both ones) are maxed out.
    Yet still, many of my units still fall into meta category.
    I optimize my account, the Base, resources gain, the trustfarm, Roguelike "battle-pass" progress and so on. At least, to a certain extent.
    And I like the story, like to do "lore friendly" runs for new events depending on area and can raise a character and give them a module upgrades simple because of lore.
    All above are influenced by different variables like mood, energy, time on hand to play, etc.
    Soo, yeah. Not sure how lucky (or unlucky) I am, nor how common it is.
    Don't trying to deny what you said either. Just a wall of thoughts in response to the video.

    • @BloopsArknights
      @BloopsArknights  Před 2 měsíci +6

      I can agree that it's easy to fall into all 3 of the categories, but that's assuming you look at it from the perspective of "I play like this, therefore I am." Instead, your profile is more indicative of your desire to play Arknights. You aren't a Johnny because you play with niche operators sometimes, you're a Johnny if your main drive for playing Arknights is to experiment and be creative. Everyone enjoys a bit of the story or likes to chill and play lax sometimes, and people like optimizing to an extent. It's not about *how* you play the game, it's more *why* you play the game.

  • @kotyara85

    That's a pretty reasonable comparison and typology! Focusing on general intent makes the types broadly pretty accurate. Though I wouldn't put lore-accurate players and pure lore/character/setting fans into the same type, I might be wrong here, but in my experience, those who play for the story don't really think about their team and just throw in whatever works, because they care more about reading. Lore-accurate players are really just nicheknights players, aren't they? But good analysis overall :) As for me, I'm usually a Timmy-type with occasional bouts of Johnnyness.

  • @Raniphae
    @Raniphae Před 2 měsíci +2

    I think applying the MtG player archetypes to Arknights is a really fun concept! I do have a couple thoughts as both a nicheknights player and someone who was brought into the game from the Vorthos mindset:
    Firstly, I'd *definitely* consider the vast majority of nicheknights as a Johnny thing rather than a Spike thing! There are a couple exceptions (I think Sniperknights in particular tends to appeal to Spikes), but stuff like 4-stars only, welfare only, single illustrator only, or even pink hair only (my personal fave!) are all about learning how to make the most of operators that might otherwise get overlooked. Operators like Goldenglow and Pozëmka help Pinknights push its limits, but it's also a niche that requires stuff like maxing out your Kirara and getting creative with Heidi! When "Johnny" nicheknights players look to tackle endgame content like CC, that doesn't really turn us into Spikes at heart (though there are definitely the Johnny/Spike combos-just like in MtG-looking to set records within their niche), because the fundamental thrill comes not from getting the highest score possible, but from doing so in a unique and creative way.
    Secondly, as a Vorthos who is primarily motivated to play by Arknights' story and world: this actually creates pretty different play patterns than what you've described in the video! (I personally very much have Johnny and Spike motivations too, but know a good amount of people who are more of a pure Vorthos; these comments are based on a combination of where I was at as a beginner player, and what I've observed in these friends.)
    Most people who do lore-accurate runs are actually doing a Johnny thing; Vorthos players tend to actually be the most "boring" in terms of gameplay unless they've also got streaks of the other archetypes in them-because for them, the gameplay is just a means to an end, to be swept away as quickly and easily as possible. Instead, Arknights Vorthos players build operators for two reasons: they're invested in the character's story, OR they want a powerful carry who will help them speed through stages without much thought. In this respect, they've got some strong overlap with your Timmy-in-Arknights player, but the underlying motivations are different. Timmy wants to hyper-buff Exu for the thrill of seeing a boss melt, or field Fiametta s3 because "hee hee big explosion"; Vorthos brings the same default squad of powerful operators to every stage or simply pulls up a Kyostin guide immediately.
    The one exception I've found-which is much more in line with your initial Vorthos concept-is actually around operators that Vorthos players *refuse* to build. I know a Vorthos who refuses to build any of the child operators; there are others out there who won't build operators who they don't like as people.

  • @juicyjuustar121

    So pretty much, there are 3 kinds of players: people who want to prove a point, people who want to prove themselves and people who have nothing to prove. In an applied scenario, it’s vivi vs eben vs eyja. Vivi is for people who want to prove a point, she’s got a high floor low ceilling but people love to bully her. Eben is for people who want to prove themselves, he has an insanely high ceilling, but it’s higher then the average player is willing to go. Eyja is for people who have nothing to prove, they don’t care about pushing limits or improving at the game, they just want to beat the game.

  • @originalfriendly100

    i feel like a deeper discussion could be had on how people approach games in general through this viewpoint. even more so perhaps an "alignment chart" could be formed based on the different types that a person more aligns with similar to the alignment grid used in d&d. like one axis could represent how a person generally enjoys a game mechanically and the other how they enjoy it artistically. using the same three personality profiles mentioned here would be a great start(or just the actual alignments) for mechanical enjoyment and 'vorthos' being just one of three on the art side. expanding on the idea, vorthos in this case represents a person's preference for the interaction with the story and characters so maybe the next one could represent someone who prefers the interpersonal interactions, or "sense of community"? and then for the third it could be someone who prefers to analyse the nitty gritty details and feats shown in the story, similar to the "vs battle" wiki.
    as a side note: i wonder if we could use a grid system like this to describe games in a better way than vague terms like "jrpg" or "rts"? like imagine describing starcraft 2 as a "spike vs battle" game to describe the appeal that it may have rather than the specific systems that it uses.

  • @sunshinemarmot7070
    @sunshinemarmot7070 Před 2 měsíci +2

    My playstyle is definitely closer to Timmy than anything else; I initially fell in love with arknights through the challenge of trying to do hard content with underlevelled units when i was still early in the game; my infatuation didn't come from trying to work out my own strategies, but from trying to execute and adapt other people's strategies meant for more complete accounts with my more limited roster (early CCs in particular were an absolute blessing for this; grinding for hours to get the timing on Pyrite gorge exactly right to clear risk 18 using units like Istina, Deepcolor, Rosa and E1 Feater was amazing fun. I was trying to adapt Eckogen's strats but hadn't pulled or raised any of the relevant 6 stars so i had to improv so much of it). That has faded a lot as my account has gotten stronger, and I'm not super creative about coming up with new strategies myself to play with my still unraised or less orthodox units with, but while my playstyle is Timmy, my mindset and my character raising priorities are 100% Johnny. Big number is boring (Degenbrecher's kit is a crime for doing nothing new compared to Irene, just having a quicker cycle for more power), but if a unit does literally anything new, it really excites me. I love to think about the use cases and map their merits out (and i do play a lot of IS and prioritise playing it with my recently raised units, so that I'm forced to get a bit creative with them). I have massive bones to pick with high meta spikes.

  • @pitagor2
    @pitagor2 Před 2 měsíci +1

    I think I'm a low meta Spike archetype because nicheknights and the community around it is some of the stuff I find most interesting and fun about Arknights. Watching people that play different niches tackle different stages in different ways and playing nicheknights myself is what I find fun. A lot of my enjoyment from videogames as a whole comes from overcoming challenges and no different in gacha games - in FGO I played 1-3*s for parts of the story and use a lot of 1-3* units generally and Arknights I started gridning the game because I found out that A) there's a roguelike mode and B) that 4*s are powerful enough to clear all normal content.
    There is a bit of the Johnny archetype in me as the reason why I am into nicheknights in particular is so I get to see these underused operators get their time to shine in places where they are optimal. General players don't really care about Greyy alter but he's amazing in 5* only content for example. I'm still more of a low meta Spike because even if I like challenge and seeing underused operators shine I still don't really wanna play with units that just feel bad to play like Frostleaf.

    Interestingly, in CN there was a web event where they surveyed the doctors on their play style. The doctors were presented with a selection of bosses and a set of premade squads that they would choose from to fight those bosses. afterwards, they were given a descriptor for their playstyle depending on what type of squads they favoured:
    choose mostly squads with meta units: The bold duellist (somewhat comparable to the high meta spike)
    choose mostly squads that are well-rounded: the fearless duellist
    choose mostly squads specifically tailored to that specific boss: the decisive tactician
    choose mostly low rarity squads: the inventive tactician (somewhat comparable to the low meta spike)
    choose squads that fit with what happened in the story: the tranquil chameleon (vorthos).
    We were actually given the results data for this event. As it turns out, over 60% of doctors who took the survey got the "bold duellist" result. It's became somewhat of a meme in the CN community. As for what I got? Well...

    Arknights is cool in that I'm not forced to play meta anymore because the weekly premium currency can be repeated once you beat one annihilation stage. Then the rest is about rounding out your account for the various content, and even harder stages can be used with your custom team but requires more creativity (which is good!). It's a really cool game where you can have self expression unlike so many other gacha, gatekeeping creativity.

    After seeing this, I think I'm probably a mix of Vorthos and Timmy. My main drive for playing are the story/lore and clearing stages with my favourite ops (which is mostly off-meta operators). Also, scuffed clears are way more thrilling than optimal clears.
    I also find that clearing easier stages with OP operators removes any challenge and makes the game boring, so I like using "weaker" ops I find fun/interesting for easier stages and bringing out "the big guns" only when I really need to.

    I stopped playing Arknights for a while because during my "High Meta Spike" phase, i slowly got burned out by how easy the stages were. Then when i returned, i decided to focus on using 4 star operators and now I'm having a lot of fun playing Arknights again.
    When i was using strong 6 star ops, i could breeze through stages and ignore event mechanics, placement and enemy ability. Now that I'm using 4 star operators, i actually have to play around the mechanics, consider my placements and enemy stats and special abilities.

    This is just my own opinion about AK doctors summarized based on your vid, don't take it too seriously
    Timmy is like the casual players: who just plays the game normally
    Johnny is like the Niche players more than Spike because of experimentations (and probably they only kind of players that remembers about Practice Plans exist), just my opinion (because we don't really have no idea what they are thinking and how they made up that strat)
    Spike is a competitive player, you are correct... and competitive have 2 types, low end like ILA (and others) or high end players that is nothing but perfection like Pard, Sciel, etc...
    Vorthos is like Lore Readers, who is way better than 90% of players but just not interested in competition or achievements, these people are the kind who count how many words there are in an event (they are usually too busy in Lore, but if talking about how they play, maybe like Cesith's Lore accurate story clear ?)
    There are 2 more types of players imo
    Guide makers, the absolute GOD among players like KyoStinV, Eckogen, so many more... (if referencing to magic, they would be a lv20 wizard in a D&D session with made up spells)
    The other ones are Jesters (aka F*@#ing Clowns) who complain out the game difficulty or when guides don't work out for them (they have a brain, but it had gone for a vacation because done with the sh*ts their owner's decision making capabilities)

I'd say I moved from one type of Timmy to another; I used to like clearing stages as easily and efficiently as possible, but these days I'm more interested in trying to make a specific team work. I do enjoy the gameplay a lot and actually spend the majority of my time doing stages but the thing that sucked me in and made me stay was the lore. Don't underestimate the power of a Vorthos, fanworks are a powerful promotional material!

    I’m more vorthos, but I like to build meta units and just use guides so I don’t have to beat the stages on my own haha.

    Luv it !! I kinda realised how my view of the game shifted based on my account progression - ( 4y acc ) - At first it was fun to finally be able to beat the stages with whatever was the strongest team I could throw out but once I gained acces to more options I just do a lil bit of both -
    If the stage mechanics are annoying and just made to make you suffer then I just brote force them with 6* comps,
    but I also enjoy making up nieche challenges for myself to follow and try to make the most of more rarely used ops - coz whats the fun of having those 100+ build characters if you don't ever use them no?
    no 6* clears are lot's of fun - since everyone stand more or less on the same power level and you don't really have those 'good for everything ' ops - so it makes you think
    Sorry if it was too long
    and ye I'm not a jonny but I still like your content and how you showcase interesting ways to push the game throughout unexpected means

    but anyways, great video! i'm definitely a timmy player like what you told me haha, i play this game for fun! and i think it's fun seeing how different people play this game, which is why i love seeing things like nicheknights and low-level clears, because they inspire me to do something awesome myself with my own operators! and honestly that's mostly why i watch your videos, they let me see the game in a different light! (and of course they're good videos in general lol), if i never came across your channel i'd probably still be hating on crushers not knowing what they're actually used for XD

    i'm all of them
    I start as a low-meta spike, because i dislike having events unfinished when they get launched
    so i use an optimized Squad for a map to get a fast clear.
    After all that Stress is done, i create fun teams with less conventional Operators to try and beat it in a more complicated way.
    Eventually, i just drop it all and just make a third run and see if i can beat the map with the operators i find the most enjoyable

    Quote 'Your profile isn't based on your playstyle, it's based on what you want out of Arknights.'
    What if I was looking for a game to invest my time in. PVE game that has collection of anime characters with appealing desing. But found not only that but intersting worldbulding, fun gamplay (even mor fun when it's IS or Reclamation Algorithm) and superb interface (actually design choices are great in this game overall). And this 'investment' probably is still the main thing i want out of Arknights.
    With that said i do find some commonalities with each of those 4 profiles. And that fact alone reminds me about 4 temperaments theory (or 16 personalities, not a big difference) where i had the same problem. Nowadays, this theory is regarded by scientific community as, to put it bluntly, bullshit. With scientiests leaning to more gradual distribution (like in OCEAN system) instead of setting defined qualities to one type (personality/profile).
    Also i'm sorry if it sounded offensive, just stating my honest feelings about assigning people to types. And it'd be nice to see similar video but with another perspective on this subject.

    I wanna use Quartz, but not really Quartz, because I'd rather use Wind Chimes over Quartz, but I don't have Windy, so my Quartz remains at level 60, lol..
    Similarly when I was picking between Kroos2 and GreyThroat to E2, I had to go with Kroos because she was more unique and dedicated with her rapidfire whereas Greythroat is "weaker" than both Exusia and Archetto, specifically Archetto's S3 is just a better form of Greythroat's S2! - Just like how Quartz's better skill is her generic S1, but Wind Chime's generic S1 is, by design, strictly better..! And! I *want* to use Coldshot too; but the upcomming Ray outdoes her directly with her S2!
    BUT, I'd use Tequilla over Mylnar anyway, Qiubai over Surtr anyway, Ch'en and Irene over Degenbrecher, Amiya and Haze over Logos, or even W and Rosmontis over Wisadel anyway, because I have reasons to rather *not* use them, even if it's self imposed?
    Well that's just, the behavior of mine this discussion reminds me of heh.. I'd feel obligated to use what's *directly* better out of principle, optimizing those resources and all that, but under that I want to use who I enjoy, and emphasize the more unique or appealing things of the "weaker" ones, right?

I've fallen out of love with the gameplay lately (likely a result of FOMO-induced burnout) but I still stick around for the story aspects of the game. That being said, I still like to challenge myself by clearing story and most EX stages with the same team I've been using since year 1, which can pose some interesting challenges due to differences in design philosophy between then and now, and I built all the fox operators in anticipation of trying out the Vulpoknights niche (though I burned out before I could actually try it.) I'm probably closest to a Vorthos, with the caveat that I don't actually enjoy most of what Arknights creates. I used to when I started the game but both the game and my standards have changed substantially over 4 years. Now I'm stuck ranting at every corner because I care too much about Terra only to see Hypergryph fumble again and again. Abandoned plot threads, non-sensical world building, awful characters, janky character arcs, horrible prose and or translation, pacing... Arknights has done it all in some capacity. Obviously there are moments of greatness aswell but there are very few AK pieces of content I would genuinely call great with my current understanding of storytelling. Doesn't help that most of the better ones are sidestories, the main story has been outright terrible ever since chapter 10.

    This rings so much more true for me after all the gachas I've been trying to get into lately have flopped for me. Gacha games need to stop trying to get me to play every single day, just give me an auto-grind mechanic like Arknights does and I'll be happy!

  • @zomfgroflmao1337
    @zomfgroflmao1337 Před 2 měsíci

    I mean, meta Arknights is so piss easy that everybody becomes a Johnny. xD
    But let's be honest here, I doubt any player is just one of these archetypes, hell I even formulated one of my problems in Arknights before as the hard decision between building an operator that I might not like story or character wise, but like for the unique gameplay (Blemishine is a prime example of this, pretty boring lore wise, but two very interesting applications gameplay wise with making defensive recovery skills offensive as well and making the whole sleep niche possible), which according to the archetypes are two different archetypes clashing.
    I really like Arknights world, lore and characters, which would be part of the 4th archetype, but I usually don't have it impact my gameplay all too much, apart from picking certain character over another similar character because I like them more (for lore/character reasons). I'm also mainly interested in doing interesting clears over just clearing a stage, but everybody with half a braincell gets pushed into that kind of mindset by Arknights design, with full meta teams making the gameplay way too easy and boring. Which hits both the first (going toward niche optimization) and second (finding uses for interesting characters that might not be classical 'good') archetypes, which makes me and probably most people three archetypes and the fourth is the meta one that is actively disincentivised by Hypergryph themselves by making the game boring. The only way I see the meta archetype working for someone is when they are just in it for the story (4th archetype) and don't want to waste time on anything else, so they go full meta to reduce the gameplay to a minimum.
