This song is like a breath of fresh air. I miss the 90's so much.
Me 2 i was born in 90
A friend & I discuss the 90s often. I was an 80s Teen and can tell you, the 90s were much richer and memorable overall. There's nothing Like the 80s for sure, yet
The 90s are regarded as the last great Everyman decade.
I believe the best, is yet to come.
Ironic, but true
It was the last decade before social media and hand held computers didn’t destroy people. Memories were left to the mind alone and VHS videos. I loved the 80’s and 90’s.
the 90s was nihilistic with a last gasp of meaning@@Nathantodd2012

One day scientists will figure out why this song hits so different when you're grocery shopping 20 years after it came out.
It's psychological nostalgia... apparently in the 60s they played 30s music...they play the good older tunes food shopping so we will be all happy and spend/shop more and connect the store with good times/tunes
Because it's the best _muzak_ song ever recorded. It's also a so-so pop song too.
So true! Lol! I feel like it's always on when I go into Kroger
Heard this in the grocery store yesterday been singing it since then lol
True Dat 😻
I’m Saudi from Jeddah city, 43 years old. They used to play this song in the radio most of the times, it brings back sweet memories and get me high spirited every time I listen to it.
It's very emotional for me
I hated elementary school and my childhood was no fairy tale, however I miss the feeling of the 90s. It's hard to explain.
Know the feeling.
I hated high school.
Same here. Horrible childhood growing up, but things and people were more simple back then.
I hated high school but still miss the 80s. So it's relatable.
I feel the same
Im in my 40's now and this song came when i was in my late teens. It's a bitterswet reminder of what my life has gone through to get to this point.
I remember hearing this on the radio every day when i was a kid out in the barn doing chores. Also 'Sunny Came Home' and 'Give Me One Reason' I remember.
Having nostalgia I loved this at 13 I'm now 39
Real talk.
It’s crazy how many of us are missing the past while we live in the future we yearned for back then.
Absolutely love this song
I’m not sure if we were yearning for the future , we just never thought it would be such a drag , especially music wise
It’s because the world is changing for the worse. Evil and corruption is trying to take over. Even music has taken a fall
@@sanaruarts5527 -Agree 100%.

man, I am a child of the 90's so maybe it's just nostalgia, but I swear the radio was amazing in the 90's
Not just nostalgia. it was absolutely amazing
So true my friend! It really was a special time in music.

Yeah it's sad. Life and the economy was better for musicians back then as well. It's tough to pursue creative career paths in this generation
Facts, Im 24 and the music from your days is darn amazing. Matchbox 20, The wallflowers, The gin blossoms, Sheryl crow, 3 doors down, Michelle branch, Alanis Morisette, Counting Crows, Howie Day, Third eye blind, Nirvana. I could go on and on man. My generations music is trash, 90's music was really music with real instrumentals. None of that computerized autotune shit, and no damn smartphones. People actually talked to people, every one is a zombie on their phones in this day in age. Its funny that my "generation" (especially hipsters) try to emulate the 90's style to a certain degree. No one is authentic anymore !
R.I.P. Andrew Rego who passed on 19 years ago after a school skiing trip accident, my best friend, you will never be forgotten. We used to sing this one on the bus every single chance we heard it come on. Bus buddies for forever bro.

Fellow metal/indie head, loving this nostalgia
Same. I'm a grunge/metalhead but this song gets a listen every single time. Ain't no shame.
Apparently he won a minor Tony Award for an obscure musical just a few years later, and has mostly had good work as an arranger and musical director after that.
Same here. I have 90s on 9 preset on my sirius radio with liquid metal, octane, turbo, etc.... most get skipped on that channel (Brittney spears and such), but not this one
90s music is what I grew up on. This, grunge, punk, anything on the local rock stations. But then I discovered Pantera. And Slayer. And Sepultura. And Lamb of God. My love for the guitar grew so much when I watched a video of Dime playing 'Domination' in Moscow '94. He became my idol, and metal is what I became. But still, I'll listen to the songs that remind me of when times were so much simpler, and this is one that I'll crank up in the car. My wife will just look at me and ask "why the hell is this on your playlist? Next time play it before you make my ears bleed!" 😅😅😅
Even if he never wrote another one, he wrote one great song, and that's something.
Are you kidding me?? Just because he never made another “hit” doesn’t mean he didn’t write INCREDIBLE music. Listen to those first 5 records. They are absolutely incredible. Barely anyone could ever write as good as Duncan sheik

In a recent interview, he only put this song in to fill out his album, not as a lead single. Also, he moved on to compose Broadway shows like Spring Awakening, the darling of the Tonys. He's doing just fine.
Agree. This whole album is great. Obviously underrated. Duncan is the man! 😊
Fabulou and often dark, introspective and moody album. I think very underrated.

I love how expressive he is too. Just looking at his face and his eyes, you see the love, confusion, pain, dawning realization, sense of betrayal, indecision. Clear but subtle and not overacted. He could have been a great actor if he had wanted to.
You can hear the emotion in his voice too, as a blind person like me.
This guy's management failed him. Good musician, attractive young man. Should have had a real career. But I know he's made plenty of money off this one song.

GREAT Song that I found myself Singing today and had to hear it!
So many memories. I miss my life back then.
This song helped me through a narcissistic abuse situation. This played on the radio when I was thinking about the future of my so called "relationship" with someone who "really had me going, wishing on a star". But the black holes that surrounded them were, indeed, heavier by far. But I was thinking it over anyway. Because I wanted to believe or imagine they really did care about me the way they pretended to. Despite all the ways they emotionally abused me. But this song helped seal my decision. I have no regrets. Because I, too, didn't suppose it was worth the price that I would pay had I continued. It wasn't worth the one I already paid. I feel a lot better now... still a lot of healing to do but it's a step up from where I was✌

Yeah. Duncan wrote the music for the Broadway show Spring Awakening, and he is an underrated singer. The least favorite compliment for a singer. A one hit wonder. Barely Breathing put Duncan Sheik on the pop charts map with heavy rotation on the top 40 radio in the 90's.
So... u and i we are lucky for know him
This song may have the most perfectly written bridge in all of music.
This song is so 90s and I mean that in a good way.

The best songs grab you after a few listens. But, it's a rare one that grabs you the very first time. They usually have an often repeated hook--either a sung or melodic part--that have you singing along with it by the end. This is one of those. I also liked and remembered it from the very first time. (Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald/G Lightfoot proves it can be done with no singing required in the hook).

I know, too.
Isn't it funny how most people, regardless of their age, think that the last great musical era was the one from their youth, and everything since just doesn't quite measure up. I am in my 60's now, and I can tell you, in my opinion, that there is great music out there from every decade, if you just look for it. (It won't come looking for you!)
exactly my observation as well. 90's was my era and the songs during that time had a lot of impact in my psyche while i'm growing up. it was the late 90's when I discovered older era songs from the starting from the 50's and there were really good tunes and the song writing is superb as well.
Each generation has become more commericalized......but yes.....if you look harder....there is a lot of great music in every generation!!!
Do you think it means that what we're saying is...the music I prefer is so because it represents the best time of my own life?
Yes, I think that's at least part of that perception, but isn't that a sort of depressing way of looking at your life? You can usually find "good" things in life if you look for them.
reaperrap9
Your post is refreshing. I too feel the same way and have for a long time now. Good music is good music no matter when or where it's found. Though the music of my youth is generally my favorite (at least my favorite to revisit it now and again) I've found great music in many decades. I did think earlier today that I am stuck in "English" music though. At least as far as language and geneology. I love me some classic Handell and Behothven as much as I love Green Day, Tonic, Stone Ponys, Sade, Nanci Griffith & Bob Mould.
Reminds me of watching VH1, MTV, and Pop Up Video early in the morning, eating cereal and feeling carefree. Pure nostalgia. I miss those times.
This song came out at the exact time I was in the most disastrous relationship of my life. Every. Single. Word. speaks exactly to what was going on... we were off and on for several years and then remained friends until the off and on thing reared it's very ugly head and then last year finally called it off for good after he threw me under-the-bus AGAIN. I think it's interesting that I've never seen this song online (CZcams) and it popped up after another song (that I've never seen online) .. time to heal for real this time and asking God to heal the deep wound in my soul...
One of the most beautiful songs in my playlist!
And you know it..

Ms. Maria E. Smith, I must respectfully disagree with you. The 80’s had the best music 🎶-rock, metal, new wave, pop, r&b and alternative. When the 90’s ended, in the year 2000 was when you saw the 80’s bands reuniting because there was still a market for them. I don’t recall that for the 90’s, and trust me I was looking for them

I remember hearing this on the radio, in the summer of 96 at my first job, building kits for the carnivals claw machines. I wasnt into this type of music, but this song always brings back that memory...when i was younger healthier and naive.
Great high school memories...wish I could turn back time. Momma would still be here, she went to be with our lord on 1/10/18 from Pancreatic Cancer...Cancer is so merciless. Thank you for everything you did for me momma, Rip momma I miss you more and more everyday.

My dad used to sing this song a lot when we were much younger it brings back memories of that time with him
Song never gets old makes me feel better during ups and downs that life can bring.
My daughter told me about a time when she was out with her friends. She started having an asthma attack and this song came on. She was okay and laughs about it today.
Oh my goodness wow that is some *crazy* irony
Oh my God! How crazy is that? Glad she’s OK! That should happen in a movie L O L.
Wonderful memories by that time was in Med school, dreaming in the future and living the madness of school...love it...what a memories!!!!

I never really noticed what a devastatingly handsome man he is.
Oh hes always been handsome. Still handsome.
I’m a dude, so I can’t admit to that
@@kevinbell1364 Then be more secure in your sexuality, you sound very 1996. Fitting for the song :) Duncan's handsome, no biggie to say that as a man
mark janssens not going to open this can of worms. I will say that I am ok with being a “knuckle dragging, stereotype of a overcompensating tough guy”
He should have been cast as Patrick Bateman.....looks just right :)
This song hits differently in my 40's then it did in my teens
Facts
The first strum of the guitar 🎸 gets me every time.
Yep...you know what's coming...for me, nostalgia, sadness and tears.
This piece of emotionally driven art got me through a rough patch at a certain point...thank you Duncan:)
The 90s really painted a different picture of the people that truly sought to love. We had piercings, tattoos, music talent for days, chip on our shoulders, but damn did we love. We loved fiercely and no one will ever disuade me of that.
This song brings me back to simple times and how things were so different back then.
Don't know why but suddenly this song popped into my head. It's crazy how songs can do that. I miss childhood.
