    The Prince of Orange may not have been an outstanding military leader, but based on his looks, he probably could have been a back-up singer and tambourine player in a second-rate 80’s pop band.

I have always studied the tragic American Civil War. The same author who penned the Sharpe series has written a 4 book series set in that conflict. There is a scholarly work that reads like a novel called"Lee's Lieutenants", I'm afraid I can't recall the author at the moment; but, it covers the history of all the Corps commanders who were Lt. Generals that served under Lee. I have heard it is required reading at West Point as it addresses leadership styles unfortunately driven by personality and intra- command disputes and problems with command

    The threat of a charge is sometimes more important than the charge. I have cavalry moving about, and I force you to get into a square. That square is going to keep you safe from the cavalry but then the artillery and rifle fire gets you while you stand there. Infantry wants to be in a formation where they have the most possible firepower aimed forward at the enemy (usually a relatively thin line), and not bunched up for the artillery.
    The cavalry is a mobility element foremost, I can send it to check a place or threaten something. Chasing down routing units is something cavalry excels at. Units routing are at their most vulnerable, and that's when they're not in pesky squares or coordinated firing lines that cavalry hate. Cavalry can chase after them and exploit breakthroughs.
    Mounted infantry starts to show up. You get guys on horses who just uses them as a battle taxi. You ride up, dismount with your carbine and fight as an infantry formation that just appeared somewhere unexpected.

    • @EzekielDeLaCroix
      @EzekielDeLaCroix Před 4 lety

      I think from the scene of events it seems like Wellesley ordered an attack against French guns. I think this one is loose conglomeration of events based off after the French took La Haye Saint and were now sniping the Allied command post and the French artillery being moved closer to Allied lines after the center was taken.
      After the French took La Haye Saint and threatened Allied command, William, the Prince of Orange, organized a counter-attack to regain La Haye Saint. The actual attack actually was well supported with combined infantry and cavalry support. The French however saw this and countered his counter. With the fog of war making a mess of the battlefield, the attack fell apart and first the infantry were routed and one cavalry unit saw this and also retreated. One Dutch cavalry unit however pressed on to attack the French artillery regardless of no longer having their full complement but the French gunners received word of their presence and were ready to receive them by the time they arrived.

    • @Luke_Danger
      @Luke_Danger Před 4 lety +2

      @@EzekielDeLaCroix My read of the scene was that Wellington just said that he was going to need the cavalry, intending to use them after he was able to get them an opening to rush in and spike the guns. Meanwhile, the Prince took it to mean "launch a charge NOW" and Wellington did not catch on as to what the Prince was actually going to do, instead thinking that the Prince meant he would lead the charge himself once the order came.
      Then the Prince sends the cavalry home entirely and orders lines when they needed squares...

    • @Luke_Danger
      @Luke_Danger Před 4 lety +1

      @@EzekielDeLaCroix The Charge of the Light Brigade, as I recall, was a case of orders being entirely misinterpreted. As to this - when I said 'intending to use them after he was able to get them an opening', that meant after he either opened up a hole in the French lines that would be difficult to reform in time or tied down the units that would intercept the cavalry so that the cavalry could get the job done with acceptable losses for the military gains of disabling the French guns. And almost certainly intending to support the cavalry push with infantry and artillery either way.
      "I will need your cavalry" can mean either launching immediately, or just that they will be needed in the battle at some point. My read was the latter.
      [EDIT: Think of playing a battle in Napoleon: Total War - you can't just throw your cavalry into the thick of things without getting them mauled, but if you get them an opening they can get to the cannons and get out again once the guns are dealt with, disabling the constant pressure of artillery]

      These big field armies aren't constantly fighting battles either, there's a long "small war" of raids, skirmishes, recce, provisioning as the field armies manouver around eachother.
      A unit of 50 blokes on horses is pretty good at going over to a hill and peeking at what's on the other side. If they run into a party of foragers and their escorts, there's enough of them to pick a fight.
