  • Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Craig Goldy Licks From 1985. In the countless hours I've spent watching live guitar solos during prep-work for creating various Three-For-All episodes, I've spotted various solos by Craig through years and always stop to watch them.
    Aside from his shreddy licks and a variety of slick ideas, Craig's solo always had some interesting theatrical elements at play when he toured with Dio and Giuffria - including a "guitar servant" assistant, attacking mechanical spiders, and more!
    The ideas in this lesson range from shred-approved pivot arpeggio runs, a converted string-skipping phrase that brings Paul Gilbert to mind, a wicked melodic harmonic idea using an old Eddie Van Halen trick, and a two-handed "Bach-esque" idea that will surely get your fingers twisted - but in a good way.

    Craig is a treasure! He told me about how the lasers used to shoot the spider would burn his hands! As you can see in the comments, He's not above making a personal reply to comments from fans. I think he's got to have the best economy of motion in his picking technique I've ever seen. He says it comes from years of drawing, specifically Afro hair styles in drawings for his high school friends of their sports heroes..tiny curly circles, over and over and over...lol! Priceless as is Craig! Definitely an innovator and unsung hero

    I was 16 when Dio Dream Evil came out in '86. Vivian Campbell left big shoes to fill, but I was not disappointed when I heard Craig's playing for the first time. I had seen Dio with teenage Rowan Robertson on guitar and then again with Tracy G on guitar during the 90's. By 2000, Nu metal ruled. I happened to see that Dio was playing a show at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. I didn't have the Internet or CZcams in 2000. All I expected that warm Spring day in 2000 was a few too many beers and Ronnie giving it all he had. To my surprise and thrill, Craig Goldy opened the show by ripping into the song Sunset Superman. Dio played the usual Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Dio favorites as well as the Magica album from start to finish that night. I left drunk; nearly deaf; and happy.

Vivian will always be THEE quintessential Dio guitarist!! There's no question about that!! And what Rowan, Traci-G and Doug brought to the table was incredible and amazing....it was just such an honor to even have met him....my favorite singer....and then become friends during the Rough Cutt demos....and all those nights at his house just the 2 of us....and in his home studio just the 2 of us are memories and experiences that I will treasure for the rest of my life!! Thank you!! And thank you for the question! It's all hammer ons and pull offs! Going up the strings from the low E to the high E strings was the hardest obstacle.....cause I was used to wherever my first finger would start.....it was usually picked by my right hand....so I had to hit harder as a hammer on with my left first finger on the first note of each string I was jumping to. Going back or ascending was a little easier cause I was used to the hammer on pull off thing in that direction. Thanks!!

      Thank you Jarlath!! I'd love to think that.....but it was mainly because of the relationship Ronnie and I developed from working and writting together for the Rough Cutt demos....one late night session he turned to me and said...." Goldy....if Viv ever doesn't work out....you'd be my first choice"! And usually Ronnie and Jimmy got together first, then Viv, then the rest of the band as Ronnie put it to me....so when Jimmy didn't really show much enthusiasm then....Ronnie called me and said " You're up kid"!
      By that time I had compiled 136 ideas. It was true in the eyes of the record company that nobody wrote as much as I did ever before! But there was a lot of other factors at play! Ronnie and I were friends first! So we would just hang out at his house just the 2 of us a lot....before Holy Diver even.
      And since he was and still is my favorite singer, and Ritchie my favorite guitarist....the music they made became such a huge part of me....and in a way....I was giving back a little of what they gave me!!
      It was truly a dream come true!!

    • @TCraigGoldy
      @TCraigGoldy Před 3 lety +3

      @@maxmustardman298
      I had a much different amp set up before the Spectrum concert....and wanted to use it for both the Spectrum and the Dream Evil album. The Spectrum rig were Randall Amps ( not sure which head )....and the pickups were hand made by Mr. Armstrong himself.
      I happen to make friends with him and he made those pickups by hand from scratch!! The Warlock body was Alder wood and a rosewood fret board. When you have a chance...listen to the opening guitar chunks and main riff that also serves as the verse on the studio version of "Time to Burn".....those single note chucks had a very aggressive and edgy tone and were very percussive and punchy. I wanted to use that rig for both....but since I only had one stack...and the guitar tech got an endorsement with Randall where they supplied a massive backline ...we went with that for the Spectrum.
      When the "Dream Evil" album was being recorded....Ronnie wanted me to use a stock Marshall JCM 800.
      Which really through me off since we used my rig for "Time to Burn"
      I didn't quite understand why we couldn't use that for the "Dream Evil" album. No modified 800's either.
      I was able to use a pedal that had an actual tube in it that made it more like an amp with 2 high gain knobs currently not in the 800's.
      I hope that answers your question!
      Plus, one of the techs put in a capacitor in my wireless gear because back then a wireless unit muddy-upped the tone. And that too played a big part of the guitar tone for the Spectrum!! Thanks Max!

He seems to be a very down to earth, but you had to have some serious talent to be on those 80's bands unlike a lot of today's music it just very repetitive and seem like they just don't have the same level of talent. I love the licks you showed, they I am still working on sweep picking and it isn't easy, and to add 2 hands on the frets is inc readable. Thanks again for the trip down memory lane.

Your tone/sound is also so great on these....I dunno if anyone even mentions that...but your lessons are always so sonically great I just like listening to them even if I don't always follow through in practice sessions. I propose two more obscur-ish players for licks lessons: Pete Lesperance of Harem Scarem, and Andy Gillion of Mors Principium Est, the "Streely Dan" of melodic death metal! :)

    @Late Night Guitar Lessons
    You are an extremely gifted and talented guitarist!
    Do you have any links to your original songs and solos therein? Would love to hear what you come up with having so many players soaked up into your brain. Thanks again! Very cool thing to do!!

    Gary Moore ,picked all the notes in these arpeggios,on the "Back on the streets" album ,you can hear the notes more clearly[less gain,hes been doing this since the early Seventies [or had] and the way he held his pick was at a very awkward angle ,heard it so mant times ,from others ,but prefer Garys attack on each note ,more aggressive .

    Another awesome lesson. It would be great if you could include what's going on with your picking hand when demoing these kinds of licks (on the first lick, for example). I see there's some economy picking going on there. That would be a huge help.

    This was awesome! Gosh I hate to admit it but I almost forgot about him! He was definitely an under rated player and seemed like he never got to really break big big if you know what I mean. Love the licks you chose! and man you are wicked in that first lick! Great job!

      @@MyGuitartime Thank you my friend!! Your kind words mean more than you know! I'm just a fan that got into the band!! I worked at being my best....but being in Dio wasn't a gig or a job....it was a dream come true!!
      I learned so much from working side by side with the Master! And I was fortunate enough to have worked with some of my other favorites! And have had a chance to put out albums with some of my other favorites! But nothing compares to the time spent with Ronnie just the 2 of us! There's a few albums that came out over the last few years that reflect some of that time and experiences....and I got a couple more albums to finish and then I'm really gonna take my time and try and put out an album that would make him proud! Some say the Dream Child album with Rudy Sarzo is it, some say the 1st Resurrection Kings album with Vinny Appice was it, some say my 1st solo album "Hidden in Plain Sight" is it....but those might be close....but I hope to do an album that will infuse the kind of inspiration that I got from Rainbow Rising, Deep Purple -Burn...something like that! And when I come across videos like this and read comments like yours....it's just so amazing and humbling at the same time!! Thank you for that Brian!!

    Definitely not a popular thing to say, but I've always thought Craig was the best Dio guitarist. Yes, Vivian is obviously awesome too, and he wrote lots of classic riffs and solos, but I'll still have to go with mr Goldy.

    • @TCraigGoldy
      @TCraigGoldy Před 2 lety +2

      Wow!! Mats Nilson!! Thank you for that my friend!! That leaves me a bit speechless! Viv was definitely the quintessential Dio guitarist no mistake about that and those first 3 albums are rare gems in the coal mines of music! Rowan, Doug and Tracy-G all brought their "A" game and it shined....big time!! I'm glad I got to bring a more Blackmore-ish approach to my contributions to Dio....but the main thing is this.....I'm a fan that got into the band! And being in Dio was not a gig....or a job....but a real Dream Come True!
      So, for me to see this video and read some of these amazing comments like yours......really does mean a lot!!
      So, thank you!!

      I agree also. Vivian did nothing after leaving Dio. Dio wrote many of the riffs from the Vivian days

    Despite the fact that David explains again everything in a great way, I have to say that this particular lesson is not for me. I never found something really special or unique in Craig‘s playing. And overhand muting is something that doesn‘t make any sense to me. Anyway, David is the man!
