I’m sorry to tell you but I don’t think your thrips issue will be resolved so easily. I was battling them for months and nearly lost my mind until I realized they burrowed into the plant tissue to bury their eggs there. So you can literally spray them every day and kill all the thrips but they’ll keep coming back until every egg has hatched and it’s basically impossible if you have a lot of plants to control all of that. The only thing I found that works very effectively is systemic pesticide. You water your plants with it and it takes about a week but then it poisons the bugs when they munch on the leaves. It also takes care of everything in the soil. It works for thrips, scale, and mealy bugs, but isn’t ideal for spider mites unfortunately. Spraying is still the best for those. It’s a little pricey but works for a couple months so it’s a great treatment for once or twice a year (and usually you don’t get such nasty outbreaks more often than that). Good luck!

@@HeatherHoyas I’m from FL, but live in Europe these days, so I’m not super well-versed on all the brands back home anymore. A while back, I had someone in the US suggest Boinide systemic granules that they bought on on Amazon (apparently 4lb for $22, which is a pretty good deal) and they said it was very effective. In the UK, people swear by Provanto (and I think I might’ve heard it’s available in Canada, too). In other parts of Europe, Substral Celaflor is great (not sure who all is reading this). It’s true, they are “banned” in a lot of countries, but that’s only for outdoor use, because they can kill local bug populations (so, of course, be careful how you dispose of it - don’t dump any outside for any reason). I was worried I wouldn’t find any because I heard they were banned in most of the EU, but it’s not the case for indoor use. They’re usually just in a glass display case at garden centers that an employee has to unlock for you. So I can imagine it’s the same in Canada and other places. In all the shops I went to locally, they only had 2 brands that worked systemically and one was organic and didn’t have the best reviews online. I had the non-organic one recommended, shopped around to see prices and options, read the reviews, then went back and got that first one from a store since it was actually cheaper than online. I can imagine it’ll be about the same in other places. It won’t be much of a selection, so just bring your phone and check the reviews (if you don’t order online) and go from there. Also, by the way, you can use it to spray your plants with, but I’d advise against it. Apparently in that form pests can slowly build a resistance to it. The active ingredient is a neonicotinoid - a synthetic imitation of nicotine - so just like nicotine in humans, they can build a resistance - but when you use a higher concentration when watering with it, it kills them instantly. I still swear by the usual methods for spraying foliage - soapy water, neem oil, alcohol, etc. - for spider mites, although I do recommend if it’s a bushy plant and a bad infestation to wrap the base of the plant and dunk it upside down in a bucket of water and whatever solution you’re using. It’s gets in the cracks and crevices better and saves time and stress to the plant from repotting. Another tip, you can also make a kind of tobacco tea and spray them with it. It’s cheap and easy. Tobacco (and the nicotine that the synthetic neonicotinoids are based on) is toxic to animals but safe for plants, so it’s kind of great for many of these issues. For pests in the soil, I’ve just sprinkled tobacco on the soil and watered and it took care of it. It knocked them right out. Never had any issues with pests building any resistance that way. I just don’t think it’s strong enough to expand to all parts of the plant tissue like the neonicotinoids of systemic products and was too devastated by my thrips infestation to experiment too much more after all my other efforts. So when it comes to the little bastards laying their eggs within the leaves and stems, store bought systemic is still the most effective option.
By the way, it seems like everyone is getting thrips this year. I've been collecting houseplants for about 13 years and never had them until now. It seems like growers are just putting out whatever they can in a rush because demand is so high and not checking things like they usually would. I've been ending up with weak plants, barely rooted plants, and tons of pests on new plants lately and never had any of those issues before. Hopefully things will slowly get back to normal with all that...as well as plant prices, ugh. (And if you do shout me out, since I don't upload content on YT, just call me Lina ;) )

I just battled thrips in all my plants! I used a systemic insecticide, and Capt Jack's dead bug brew, and three weeks I haven't seen a living thrips! I've seen dead one! So I believe the systemic is working good! I've treated with Capt Jack's only twice on each plant! So I believe the systemic has worked! All gone! Plants r looking better then ever! Hope this helps!

Add masquito bits to should and no fungad nats. I haven't had nats in my plants for a year! Thanks to adding masquito bits in every plant! It literally wipes them out! Plus I am an under waterer! Which definitely helps! I also not once took a plant from their pots. I felt like it was easy to get rid of the bugs! I was freaking out at first, but I demolished them so fast! Without all that extra work of taking them from their soil! Use a systemic!!

The only way to deal with thrips is to introduce good bugs that will eat them, I recommend cucumeris, stratiolaelaps and orius. Don't give up they are a pain, I know it pretty well... fought them for 2 years before starting introducing bugs and only the bugs made a HUGE improvement! Save yourself time and headache and money and dive right into the good bugs! Let them do all the work!! Thats my biggest recommendation, you will not regret it!

Hi baby what a coincidence I am dealing with spider mites too! All three of my mamei’s had spider mites and I know it’s been so overwhelming, stressful, and disappointing. I had to throw out two of my pastazanums that were attacked as well. I am also doing captain jacks dead bug spray and will be spraying for the next 4-6 weeks to catch the larvae. I hope we both manage and keep down the pest control!

The “egg” looking stuff in the soil is actually beneficial and means your soil is good! It’s fungus or something haha. I also used to think it was eggs but it made no sense because the plants that I found it In had the best foliage and no signs of anything bad. Turns out it wasn’t eggs like I thought and I could have left the soil and plant alone hahaha
I didn’t have thrips with the fungus soil though. Definitely woulda changed the soil of thrips for sure
