Ralfi's Alley- How important is a good HOTAS?

- This question has been floating around a lot. So I decided to make this little video showcasing the importance of a HOTAS. As I mention in the end, this isn't about Thrustmaster. This is about having a decent HOTAS with a decent amount of buttons to help you enjoy the game better.

Middle Finger - Express Discontent
Laughed way too loud for 2 AM.
Same here
1pm here still managed to wake up some neighbours...
That function is bound by the manufacturer and can't be changed.
This is really awesome, but what really impressed me was the dedication necessary to subtitle all the actions, goddamn.
***** It was such a pain in the ass... i'm sure I made a mistake or two somewhere too.
Your efforts did not go unappreciated, that's for sure.
***** danke
I didn't realize how many functions happen in such quick order when you know what you're doing. after flying the A-10c in dcs for 3 years now, it's all so muscle memory I don't think about the switches anymore. setting up a gun run in moment is nothing. but this made me remember how it used to take a minute or more to get everything right. lol I remember when I got a maverick off for the first time. It was such a good feeling of accomplishment.
+Terrance Storey There's a reason the Air National Guard got ED to make the precursor to this sim for them. Real pilots use sims like this to practice this so they don't have to waste expensive flight hours developing muscle memory.
hell yes
My best takeaway from this video is I can bind zoom axis. Ive been playing zoomed for 10 hours
meanwhile on my extreme 3d........
+Purwa Adiyasa Looks right for 3 seconds, Su-27 turns upside down and stalls. WHY IS THIS JERKING IN ALL DIRECTIONS ALL THE FUCKING TIME?
My Extreme 3d pro is 10 years old (it's actually my fathers) and it's really showing it's age. Looking to get something newer, but not sure if I should go for a new Thrustmaster t.flight X or a used Saitek X52 that's gonna cost me 10 -20 eur more. :P
+Zweistein001 the TM Tflight Hotas X work wonder. From personal experience
+Zweistein001 T-Flight Is Amazing, I own one, set the two buttons behind the throttle to be modifiers and it ends up becoming true HOTAS, the modifiers are so easy to acess that it doesn't even feel they are there...
+Jogui3000 I know I have since bough one and it's a really goood entry level HOTAS, though I do find it lacking in soma places like hat department and it could do with a little more buttons and maybe not have a throttle resting point at 50% power, but otherwise it's great.
Xbox one controller gang
Dude out of all the hundreds of videos I've watched on dcs a10 I've watched, this is the only one I've seen that just shows how to play in a straight forward way. Thanks!
Nice video... still trying to get my HOTAS set up properly, still playing with the button setup. BTW really enjoying your videos, been going through all your past vids, the Ralfi's Ally - S and giggles are great, been laughing all the way through them.
All this time I was told the INCR/DECR lever didn't do anything. Finally a great bind for zoom! Thank you!
nice, this is exactly why i got myself a hotas warthog setup, this really shows how much you can do and how much easier it is than using keyboard. everything is right there where it needs to be.
Thanks again for your warthog HOTAS video in the past. Had it for over a year and its worth every penny.
Man! I had to watch that in slow motion just to keep track of your moves, great work
Huge Like! This really shows the benefits of a good HOTAS. Also, it's good to see someone else uses the "hold bank with left hand while I use the mouse with right hand" method haha.
Man, subtitling this one must have been a complete ass-blasting bitchaloid. Glad you made it though, very cool to watch you smoothly annihilate everything.
MillionFoul it was... it really really was...
ralfidude yeah congrats !!
+ralfidude u should put a hotas camera in some More of our videos like f-15c
I use a touch screen monitor too for a similar reason. Its like the hotas of the rest of the controls. It can be a little slow, I assume its because it is (was?) difficult to find a good touch screen for gaming in 1080p or possibly because of windows 7/dcs adding a delay but it certainly makes things dramatically easier than taking a hand off to use the mouse. Slight frustration in that the yellow cursor can remain for a while, and using trackir your head tends to move as you go to click and so the button slides across the screen away from you but both of those can be fixed with a little practice and keybinding a few of the view keys to a hat (I use the x65 so I have a hat or two left over). It cost more than my x65 (thrustmaster hog price) but was worth every penny, it might not be used as much as the hotas but it does allow you to hit every single control in the aircraft with either hand intuitively. When oculus comes out I'm certainly going to find it hard to upgrade, and if it wasn't for the release of VR headsets I'd be calling touch screen a must have for everyone who has the money to spare.
Never heard about that, what kind of touch screen do you use? And is the touch screen your main monitor or do you use it next to it like a keyboard? Because I want to keep using the monitor I play on right now.
"Middle Finger : Express Discontent"
my sides
Damn that's some impressive flying! Good job!
Ralfi, I am going to dislike this video because you didn't say "Rifle" out loud at 1:50.
Jester You forgot to express discontent
Great advice, as usual. However, the best part of the video was the end IMHO. A lot of people who are just starting out doing youtube video's like this tend not to really comprehend how long it takes to do the job properly.
I've just ordered one of those Thrustmaster Cougar MFD packs. It adds a whole heap of buttons for non-critical commands.
Too bad nobody makes a high quality F/A-18 or F-15 HOTAS.
There's third party companies that produces F-18 joystick replacements for the TM. That's the closer you could get...
***** You're talking about the Replika stick right? He hasn't actually made any other than his prototype. His end goal is to make replacement sticks that will be compatible with the X-55 and the Thrustmaster Warthog, in addition he's planning on making his own stick entirely.. He's done a lot of design work, but we have no idea when he's actually planning to release, or what price point it'll be at. All we really know is his designs look cool, he's made one prototype, and he intends to make lots of different stick "heads" so that you always have the right joystick when you fly, but it's still all very early days.
***** ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS I NEED A LINK RIGHT NOW.
forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2412060&postcount=585
An actual production stick is still a long way off.
DrSQUIRRELBOY12 The F-15 and A10C use the same throttle, so the Warthog is very close to an F-15 HOTAS. And it definitely works well for an F-15. :)
ROFL! "Middle Finger" "Express Discontent" Loved it!
Jason Chambers Yeah, that was a good one! Sadly I don't have that feature on my X52 :( Perhaps I can modify it myself!
Jason Chambers Bet they won't find that hand signal in NATOPS.
Nice video showing the advantages of a HOTAS. I went the CH Products route. Fighterstick, Pro-throttle, and Pro Pedals. I also have the Throttle Quadrant for multi engine sims. The Thrustmaster you have looks really cool though. If what I have ever wears out I might make a switch but happy with what I have. I use my Pro-Throttle for more than just flight sims. I pretty much use it for any FPS or any other game instead of the keyboard. About the only time I use a keyboard is when I chat in game.
I'm a 60+ year old US Navy Disabled Veteran. My son just bought me the Thrustmaster HOTAS Throttle and Stick for when I play DCS. At my age, I'm having trouble figuring out how to set it up. I got it somewhat working in the Helo but when I lift off it likes to flip to the right and blow up. So I think I'm getting close. LOL Great video you made. Now if I can get mine figured out. THANKS.
Great overview, definitely a good setup for dedicated flight simmers.
I never realized how many commands I use during a flight until this video. The bossa nova music was a great choice for the outakes.
Nice video, any chance on a f15 online fighting and devensive tutorial?
Thanks
man i got that logitech 3d pro...and i feel naked seeing that beast of a hotas... btw freacking great job man...these subs also are great
What are some good button alternatives to Track IR - for managing views. I use the trim switch for trimming - not viewing - was thinking about using LEVER to modify the trim switch to view and using your technique of using throttle based INCR / DECR as a zoom. Thoughts?
You put a lot of love in this video.
Nice Video!!! Planing to get a right hand HOTAS, T16000 that I am currently using doesn't perform really well in HOTAS, although it has 12 buttons but I can't reach them when I am holding stick.
Welcome! Do you use Target GUi or Target Script Editor software to change zoom and other switches! Regards Michael:)
Watching this and comparing it to the functionality of the X55 that I bought after ignoring your review on it makes me really regret not just saving for the Warthog. It looks so much genuinely better in every aspect of the term HOTAS.
Tyrone Shekelburg I usually talk out of my ass, but that time I wasn't.
ralfidude Yea I found your review about 2 weeks after I bought the X55.... making it work tho, found a few vids where owners have built up the stick palm rest for better control. My biggest complaint right now its the software, which like you said is crap... owned one of the original Saitek hotas setups, the one with the rudder as a big bat handle on the throttle, wish I still had that one
Do you ever get the occurrence when the warthog stick likes to stay in one stationary position and it takes a little extra effort to get it moving again? Kinda makes formation and air refueling that tiny bit harder for me.
apriciate ralfy.Warthog Hotas is so expensive, but after this video and your gameplay without headcam you showing that you dont need anything else and that price is worth it so Thanks again!
That seems so easy when we master it =D. I can't wait to master as well the F/A-18C :p
I used my trusty ol' X-52 for waay too long. With judicious use of modifier keys, it could be made to work acceptably with the A-10. So you don't actually need the Thrustmaster Warthog, really.
But just a few weeks ago I put a few dollars together and finally bought the Warthog HOTAS, and the difference is incredible! Exactly the same quality as advertised. Sure, the X52 worked... but the difference is well worth the price.
I love my hot as warthog. Those of u looking. There are deals. bought mine separate. Got joystick for 80 and throttle for 175. If patient the warthog can be yours for a great price. The guy on ebay I purchased mine from had 5 more. if interested hit me up. will give his info.
+Armando Alberti HEY I'm looking!!!
How may I contact you for his info?
Didn't expect to see you here! Loved your KSP series when you still made them
I got the TM Stick on sale for $200 at Micro Center one day, so I have the X65 throttle with the TM Stick. The two rotary dials work great for assist-off flying in Elite Dangerous.
what type of aircraft are you using? the one in the flaming cliffs 3 dlc or the one with AFM and which one are the better?
do you think the t flight hotas x is a good starting stick since you said the 3d one was good and this one has a littlebit more. btw just subbed to you a few days ago but I like it alot. dcs looks so cool.
I'm running that and it's ok, great for a "lets start and see if I like it stick" but it is all plastic and has one hat and 10 buttons so its short on space.
I have the Warthog both Stick and Throttle w/ the Stick Extended about 8 inches and it's made my flying and Helios much better (precision). I flight sim, obviously, and I have spent thousands on hardware and software to do it. It does take years to build it all up but what a difference it can make.
Hello,Ralfi.May I ask what's your slew axis tune setting?I can't fine a proper setting for myself.Thank you.
Awesome! I have a Saitek Cyborg X / Mad Catz F.L.Y. 5 joystick and it simply doesn't have enough buttons, even for the Flaming Cliffs 3 aircrafts such as the F-15C. So I find myself in the need of setting my Xbox 360 wired controller aside of my joystick for the other important combat commands to ~kind of~ solve that problem of lack of buttons... And sometimes, even THAT isn't enough. =D
I've been willing to get my hands on a Thrustmaster Warthog for quite a while, but this hotas is one of the rarest things to find for sale in my conutry (I'm from Brazil). And here they cost at least approximately 3~4 times more than they cost in US (and even worse considering the price of the Dollar in my country's currency: US$ 1.00 = R$ 3.50), due to all the taxes applied over the importation of that kind of technological product.
Result, this hotas can be found on Amazon at about US$ 500.00. Here they cost about R$ 2,400.00. =/ And did I mention the fact that they're not very easy to find, to begin with? AWFUL reality for us, brazilian simmers.
wow very nice. I hot my htc vive with my gtx 1070 oc. now I am addicted to this game. just flying around is fun without any combat. you must play this in VR.
I plan to stick with my t16000m and facetracknoir with a great camera, at least for a while, as they work well for me. I share a pc with my dad who makes music, so I'm in the process of setting up his fancy mixer panel to double as a makeshift control panel for dcs. Pretty cool.
Trail Mix mount, 5 Stars
Somebody call my name?
Nice video!
how do you move the camera?
i think i need a new laptop and that saitek for play better xD
Greetings!
Hey ralfi, what switches are on that k70? also what joystick do you use for the f15 or sukhois?
So it helps you look around the cabin and zoom in out your view.
Did you open your stick due to the friction problem to fix it? Or don't you have the issue?
Hi ralfi, great vid
What mission is this? I cant find it in DCS
I wish I had that rotary axis for zoom on my CH throttle...
my only complaint with the CH HOTAS.
you should make a video for new people who want to get into dcs I watch all of your stuff and currently play shit thunder sim but this seems so scary to get into...
+deadly6actual I did.
Hello Ralfi, what pedals are you using ? currently using X52 but really want to go for Thrustmaster HOTAS, however im not used to pedals ...
do have Ocolus vr dk ? just wondering if HOTAS n VR can work together.
I was under the impression you used TrackIR for your zoom. I'm using a Saitek x-55 HOTAS which is suiting me quite well, I will be making my first foray into DCS A10 very soon which I imagine will be a very interesting learning curve. The 600 page manual is pretty helpful but damn remembering a lot of that is hard.
Khaos The manual is intimidating. Just do the training missions repeatedly, then read the manual. Then do the missions again, then read the manual. Then do some of the single player missions. Guess what you should read after that...yup. Just keep reading it in your spare time, and get some more gameplay in, and more and more will stick. It will click for you eventually
Khaos Many folks do use TrackIR for zoom, but to compensate for a computer screen vs real life views the zoom needs to be pretty extreme and easier to handle with a lever, otherwise you will be experiencing constant zoom changes with the even the slightest head movements. I don't use my TrackIR for zoom in any of my sims anymore, only to physically move the view backwards and forwards.
Khaos Track Ir is for leaning forward and back in the cockpit. The Z axis. Hence why he has a lever for zoom.
I have similar setup for track it. I use it to look around but use the zoom switch as he does. more stable and less buggy. love it.
Hello. Can you please tell me or guide me which profile are you using for the hotas. I have lots of profiles but I dont have that zoom option with the slider which is very important
No profile, Thrustmaster is all plug and play. The zoom view is described at the end of my other video titled "how to setup your track ir and what I use for zoom"
so true there ralph ! ... i started from lockon ... used to have the logitech extreme 3d pro ... then after a few years got my self the Hotas warthog :)
Is there a way to fine tune your zooming? Is that done by the TrackIR my moving closer/farther to the sensor or is it strictly done by your throttle quadrant?
Jason Chambers If im not mistaken, its just the throttle. That allows him to move his "head" i the cockpit forward and back. Leave zoom on the stick so you can lean forward and look past the parts of the canopy you cant see through
Hey Ralfi, a quick question for you: Do you use an extension or lubricant the gimbal like most people do?
No extension. but I did the sand and lube (giggidy) definitely helped smooth it out a bit.
Great video, thanks, Ralfi!
One question: Why not use TrackIR for zoom?
Rob A. Heinlein Hate it that way. I'd much rather have a more fine tuned and precise zoom control with a lever, and leave my head tracking in and out to still look around and zoom inside the cockpit.
+ralfidude isn't it a pain removing your right hand to zoom? Thanks for the great clips mate keep me coming.
Owen Liddell Nope. I do it when I can. When I need to keep my hands on the throttle then I don't bother. Do I wish there was a zoom slider on the throttle to make it easier? Hell yes, but this isn't how it's designed so I bare with it. Where as I can complain on the X-55 because it is ergonomically designed for masochists.
The thrustmaster Warthog is accurate to the real flight stick in most every way except it the stick isn't as long, it's not 3ft. I think it would be cool and easy to get a bit of metal pipe bend it to match the curve of the real stick and take the handle off the base and elongate the wires in the bottom. Then attach the pipe and make a full size stick.
Do you normally use your TM HOTAS on your desk, like in this video? I just got mine and I'm still looking for a good setup so it wont destroy my wrist/shoulder.
+aboriani been flying like that for years
How much is your stable flight due to the joystick and how much due to setting up your joystick properly/trimming properly. I can never seem to stay stable when turning in on a target for a guns run.
Jayvan Ruddick-Collins Has a lot to do with experience. Some people just lack the stick and rudder skills to precisely fly the plane, it only gets better with practice. Then there is setting some curvatures on your pitch and roll to like 25 in the options menu.
ralfidude cheers for the response. trying to get my head around the a-10 as we speak. Just find I can never find straight and level without constant inputs. Not sure if that is the stick or settings either.
ralfidude I just got my thrustmaster hotas x stick. I think that was a good stick to start of with. But what is in the higher price range? You say all saiteks joysticks are pretty much crap and its only the warthog that is good?
Had i missed something or what is the warthog the only way to go when you want something better?
Sorry for bad spelling. English its not my main language :D
Like the new intro.
5:22 is the best action he can do lol
Ralfi I try to set up the zone in and zone out like you. I got into the DCS option window and find the zone in/out but there is no reaction when I push the button. Could you please tell me how to set it up?
+solowingyy video titled "track ir settings and what i use for zoom" near the end
+ralfidude Thank you so much! I got it!
I've been thinking the last few days, its been some months since i played DCS, and i think i've forgotten all the HOTAS. need to fire it up and refresh myself\see how bad the skill-fade is.
which button or what are u using for look around?
I got this used from the official Thrustmaster shop for 191€.
I had to buy it when I saw it discounted because it's the deal of my life.
I'm very excited to sell (even for 10€) this crappy Logitech Wingman Extreme which I had for years an years... finally.
Now I'm only missing the A10C for DCS and a proper IR system which I'm planning to build (already have the camera and the filter but the LED don't properly work on my cardboard support... damn soldering skills!)
Interesting. I'd like to see the warthog throttle functions in use with the mig 21 and the fc3 fighters if you have the time ha.
Bravo!! great job
Still want to know how to programm the INCR DECR thingy to Zoom in and Zoom out =(( cant figure out cause in the settings it doesnt show up...
Metal_Ramses video is already up on it, a few vids back about track ir setup, near the end of video.
REALLY? how the fuck could i miss that X__X
thanks mate! love your vids im almost as happy as a kid on christmas when you upload a new vid :D
X52 or 16000
Which hotas should I choose?
For all of you using cheaper Sticks/HOTASes with less buttons, here is a hot tip. Set like one of your joystick buttons as a modifier and you basically have double the buttons with it. Also if you want you can use the cntrl and alt buttons as modifiers. I am using a cyborg v1 and I can say for all my 5 years of using it (second hand) I am pretty comfy with it and I have like 90% of the HOTAS on it. Obviously working with something like the TM will be quicker and more efficient, but yet. Only thing I really miss out is on the double throttle and the accuracy of the axis
Shadow ow yeah. Nice run and overall video content ralfi :)
+1, I use a TM Hotas X and I just set tons of buttons as modifiers. Btw is your IGN Shadow?
Chris Peat yes it is. The original one, not the fake one with the lower case s
Damn. Flight sims is all I used to play on my PC. Haven't played in YEARS. Technology has come so far. I used to dream about playing like this guy is here.
Do you use like an oculus rift or something because i can't see any hats being moved for looking. Sorry if i seem like a complete amateur but what simulator do you use
+Rob Tyson track ir 5
nice work with your middle finger on that tank. i like that :)
Does this video come with a jargon buster? ........ Please?
Are u using the Thrustmaster A10 joystick?
yup
Would you recommend this one to fly the p51 and the f86 on DCS world?
too overkill for WWII planes
Sidewinder ffb2 with WASD plus Q,E,SPACE and SHIFT makes for a great experience and is quicker to use once muscle memory is up and running
I have profiles for dcs for this if anyone interested
I also have a saitek x52 on main rig but honestly prefer my sidewinder profiles
What control are you using to cycle the weapons without having to go hit an osb button?
Master mode button.
Where is the beer helmet, though?
5:23 best way to kiss farewell. and it said middle finger xD. gj ralfidude
How important is a fast PC? How important is an SSD with the capacity to hold DCS World? How important is it to have arms, hands and fingers when flying DCS?
hi I may be 6 months late but whatever, an SSD is great as it is much faster to load the textures and other stuff when the game loads meaning you'll have less time to wait because it's already a long wait with an SSD so you can understand waiting for your HDD is excruciatingly long. and having arms hands and fingers is useful in dcs to use a hotas which is much faster (and also having arms hands and fingers is also useful in life and in any video games
@@allanbel6269 I noticed a big difference in speed between my PCIe M2 versus SSD. I need to upgrade my m2 capacity though. Bearing in mind the title of Ralfidude's video... How unimportant is a bad HOTAS?
@@zentriceggofficial hi a bad hotas can be a lot of things either one with a not enough precise joystick can make you time playing dcs really frustrating. but what matters in this video is the number of button of the hotas. if you don't have enough button on it you'll have to rely on a lot of modifiers or using the keyboard which can be slower or more difficult to remember every modifier with every sticks. in my opinion a hotas should have at least 3-4 stick with or without a POV stick. you should try the t16000m with the TWCS from thrust master which is great for the price and quality of the hotas I think ralfidude made a video on it
Thank you I went with a basic trust master 16000m with rudders
What rudder pedals are you currently using?
5:32 Did you mean "Extend brake"?
I'm not satisfied with the thrustmaster hotas stick. Throttle is awesome tho.
5:22 i need one of those on my HOTAS as well.
By the way your effectiveness is incredible.. so fast taking out enemies..
What was that SIM where you were flying in between the tall buildings, Thanks.
wut?
Sorry, I was refering to the video test of the TM 16000 Hotas, Thanks.
Old video, I know. But I'm genuinely sure that you cann't fly the A-10 successfully without this very Hotas. All the switches and buttons are constantly in use in this airplane and you would need to setup a hell of a keypboard profile to fly the A10 with a normal joystick and throttle device. I learned to fly the A10 with your "zero to hero" tutorials, Ralfi, thanks a ton for your effort. It would have been hell otherwise!
Your HOTAS is PRO but I wonder why no Track IR?
Milan Prica he has
Do a video on how important Track IR is compared to Mouse view, That holds more value than a joystick
Barra King err no...
How to setting zoom in and out by friction. Please
I have a video showing how to setup TrackIR, look at that one and in there I show you how to setup your zoom.
i fly f-18
i have the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS. i love it. although i only have the stick. still its a work of art.
Then you don't have the HOTAS. HOTAS means Hands On Throttle And Stick. You've just a ... HOS.
No doubt the HOTAS is the top of the line, but I think it would be even better with the slider on the left thumb on the throttle itself like the X52 Pro. Seems so clunky to have to release the throttle just to zoom in/out.
It might depend on the game ofc, but personally I zoom very frequently with my X52 Pro in War Thu... Sry, Shit Thunder!
Bjørnar Magnussen This is a replica... Complain to the United Air Force.
ralfidude Yes, I know, but in real life they can't zoom in (unless they're cyborgs), so for game purposes it would be nice to have another one on the thumb.
***** I was just kidding! *Cough*... I actually have a real plane I fly, I don't actually play WT!! Nonono...... I certainly haven't spent loads of money on it!
+Bjørnar Magnussen shit thunder, X52 Poo... banned from the comments! :D
***** the x52 has some quality control problems, but I've used plenty worse. Mine worked fine until I ran it into the ground with flight sim 2004.
Do you use any mods for the "graphics" like explosions/fire or sound?
Nope
@@ralfidude Cool thanks!
