I only just realised, there's standing water on parts of the track and it definitely looks slightly damp. You can actually see spray coming off the wheels at one point. That means that the atom not only set the fastest lap time, but also did it on a damp track. Utterly incredible
I thought the same thing. Normally, on TG, they marked wet laps with a W and acknowledge "damp" laps, because they slow times. I suspect this car could have done 1:13.5 in the dry
@@bengilliam7877 Congratulations on being the first person I've ever seen take anything away from the performance of the Atom. Faster than a car 15 times its price, and you still pooh-pooh it? K
@@boysandtoys4670 I think they only do that for the celebrity laps, because they come down for a day and have to do the lap there and then. I think they just normally try to pick the best day they can for the power lap times, but clearly sometimes the conditions are still not perfect
@@boysandtoys4670 it wasn’t that wet that he left over 1.5 seconds out there
@@siler7 he only said it’s not surprising...which it isn’t 🤣
Probably one of the most fun-looking laps. That car seems to keep you on your toes.
I was thinking the same thing. The car is so well balanced any understeer was equaled immediately by oversteer. He was countersteering just about the entire lap.
They should have put a huge undertray/diffuser on it.
"Seems to keep you on your toes" is very British understatement . That car will fling you into a tree and the steering wheel will go through your skull ,is more accurate .....
Some of you clearly don't know what a bad handling car is when you see one. Go look at every onboard video and you will see it eventually.
heres a hint, turn in slide, understeer, slide - a double action every corner.
The car that would kill you is a cobra or super snake
Drove one as a track day special, everyone else went for the usual Ferrari, Porche, Lamborghini stuff, I was left with the Atom, so not my choice. How happy was I when I drove this flying bedstead past them all. An incredible experience.
I was heavy on the accelerator not wanting to stall as I was finding the biting point on leaving - they thought I was some joker revving it which they frown upon, so didn't let me change gear from 5th all the way round, so still no idea how fast it was! I'd have rather just sat in an let the guy drive it fast.
Bedstead? Bedspread?!
@@peterjordansonthe2nd731 Bedstead - the frame of a bed.
You lucky bastard
2 seconds faster than the apollo, even without a dry track and all this oversteer… thats incredible. My god.
I still love how a bit of scafolding with an engine beat all those super/HyperCars
yeah and its mad cause the company has less than 10 employees, i think it was like 7 people when the first atom came out, i dont know about them in 2021 but they are probably still a small company, and they managed to beat a bugatti which is one of the fastest in the world lol
Juste compare the size and the weight of it, no roof, no doors, nothing. Still an amazing coffin tho
@@samjesus8 beat it, on a closed course - put them both on that super highway, Veyron would still laugh at the Atom most likely
Atom gets its time from it’s nimbleness, nailing Apex of the turns, not a lot of weight pulling out, amazing visibility, with great acceleration to boot
@@samjesus8 They're a really old company going back to 1950s. Used to make motorbikes, usually unusual types of their era. Look up Ariel Square Four and Ariel Arrow.
@@joebloggs4369 No, they're not a really old company. Ariel Motor was founded in 1991 (under a different name and then become Ariel Motor Company in 1999). It's so easy to do basic reseearch on the internet - I suggest you try it.
I think I'd settle for a "regular" Ariel Atom, with a 320 hp Honda engine.
This... thing is just menacing.

yeah, the v8 feels a bit MUDA
The AA300?
The V8 atom needs much wider tires the regular ones struggle to handle the grip
You can see Stig's helmet expression saying "Finally, a real car."
Like anyone that has been in a ''concession go kart'' vs a real go kart that's race worthy. It's like a Corvette vs giant road boat Cadillac.
i know im kinda late. it looked like there was a good sized wet spot coming through Chicago. if the track was dry i bet it would have broke in to the 1:14s. AMAZING vehicle.
I would also have liked to see how it would react to some wider tyres front and back. What about a set of 235's in the front and a set of 265's in the back? That would probably make a world of difference.
Yeah for sure some extra rubber on the ground would definitely help the Atom. That thing looked loose coming out of just about every corner. Only thing is that for Top Gear's list the cars are supposed to be in stock form. Extra rubber would help the acceleration, cornering and braking but it would probably disqualify it fron the list. It shure would make a good video though.

Gerald Keever Yea too bad it won't happen, but get it in bone dry conditions with wider tyres and I can almost guarantee you it's a 1:13 car. There's got to be at least 1-2 seconds that could be won with better traction.
Just a completely dry track would probably have resulted in a lap time a second faster. Bigger tires are also more unsprung mass, and while adding wider tires might improve grip it might also destroy the balance of the car somewhat.
My guess: The tires are more than fine in its width and grip. If you look at the Studio shoot it is fitted with Toyo Proxes R888 - that is a seriously grippy semi slick at the edge of being road legal. Damp cold conditions don't help in getting enough temperature into the tire for it to work optimally. The car sliding all over the place indicates a lack of temperature in the tires.
If the lap had been done on a nice summer day, maybe a mild evening after a sunny day, the car would have been more than just a second faster.
Stig's handling that car unbelievably well.
“He’s got it sorted like a Japanese lunatic!”.. one of the best Britishisms I’ve ever heard since the 2000 Grand Prix season when, in one race, Kenny Roberts Jr came off the line “like a hairy goat”.
It's a Clarkson-ism.
Oh! the old top gear guys are awesome!
The ONLY Top Gear guys..
There are no other top gear presenters ... just scabs
James May said that the he, Richard and Jeremy were equally as awkward when they first started on Top Gear, and that it took a long time to turn into the Top Gear we knew and loved. He said the new hosts just need some time to let their chemistry develop, and I personally think he has a point.

This has to be the best extreme stig lap ever
I drove the first atom on a small day experience track and that was the most thrilling thing Iv ever been in. Giant go kart brilliance
0:56 The sound "inside" is super brutal
Incredible talent to drive like that

1:34 good god, that corner was perfect. There's no beating the stig
If theres oversteer, or understeer, the corner is not "perfect". He had turn in oversteer.
Wow! What a lap!
Would love to own one of these beasties!
I love watching the stig run things around their track. Not so much the celebrity's.
That car looks like a total blast to drive.
Amazing machine. Amazing driver.
A neighbour of mine her dad has one and he parked along side my car , I went out to take a look and he came out and said he was taking her out but she wasn't ready and asked if I wanted to go for a spin , obviously he showed off a bit and it was like being strapped to a missile, he was hurtling up behind cars on the duel carriageway and just flicking the steering wheel and we shot past the cars like they were standing still . I used to often go on the back of my brothers superbikes and race to the coast but this thing was like a whole new level. The closest think I can think of is it`s like being in a real life video game !
@:29. I love shows that insert their own laughter. You hear the laughter, but not 1 person is laughing
Looked like some people were laughing.
The way he flings that thing around the track is just ballsy and utterly incredible
Wow that really feels like karting on steroids
Looks like a massive handful on the limit
Hell of a driver!
I want to see these Atoms race around the Monaco Grand Prix circuit!
Or....how about from one side of Paris to the other!
It’s got too low of a top speed. But incredibly fast round a small track with many corners.
That was kind of expected because literally, a 3 liter V8 in a vehicle that doesn’t even weigh a ton.
The average minivan has about 1000 lbs of luxury stuff. Atom's ''luxury'' is its performance.
That thing sounds like a cosworth DFV and i absolutely have to have one
I'm driving an atom at a track day this July along with a Lamborghini and Ferrari I cant bloody wait
I love this Atom car too much, It must be so powerful, I think the most people don't know this when they see the tiny car. I love this. btw. in the race sim rFactor2 is now the Ariel Atom V8 available in the steam workshop and it makes too much fun ! my fav car in this sim
Great car with a stunning engine.
The engine isn't anything special
Jack Wood why are you commenting to an 10 month old comment?
10 months. and does that make it illegal?
Jack Wood no but it's kind of useless
Baum MBT hardly

That looked like such a blast. I wanna take one of those up to Willow Springs and tear-ass on the street course!
How did it do that time in those conditions I will never know

4 words: STIG IS A BEAST...
I've seen a few videos of the Ariel Atom at Nuremberg, and it was a beast on that track. A track that is known for being difficult to navigate. So I wasn't too surprised to see it break the Top Gear record
It’s Nürburgring. Nuremberg is where they had the trials for the nazis after the war
@@katjoe1974 I didn't even catch that. I know the difference between the two places. I wrote that post late at night and the auto correct must have put that in instead of Nurburgring. So just relax, I didn't mean it as an insult to anyone.
@@davezabriskie6365 haha no worries, friend. I’m not worked up, no offense or anything taken. It’s a common enough mistake
@@katjoe1974 Indeed it is. I heard of several 'Ring noobies who input 'Nuremburg' into their satnavs on their first trip to Germany - an expensive error! LOL

I'd love to see one of these with a bit more tire, and the most modern track/road rubber available, nicely warmed up, do the lap again.
do f1 tires fit on this car?I think they do
@@KitKitChanIsaac Autocross tires are probably the best that you can fit on this car and still be road legal. If you take it to the track then you have your choices of various compounds on slicks.
Does anyone know eich episode/season this is?
00:52 - "The tail's coming out," says Jeremy. Hmm. Never mind oversteer; fellow Brits will be reminded of the naughty Bear from Bo' Selecta...😲
Stig is Awwwwsooooome
I want one
they look cool...
God, that front splitter seems wobbly as all hell. Bet it'd be even faster with a better one.
I love how it does just sound like a massive superbike on the drivers view. Must be strange driving this if you're a bike owner.
With wider stickier tires it could do better times?
Edge of traction
And it did that on a wet track.
God damn.
thanks x el video like
Its like a baby f1 car that hasn't earned it's body yet, it's insane how fast that vehicle is.
Stig is basically a lion tamer here. Btw, they should add an F1 style halo to these in the future.
LIKE A MICROBE!!!
Ariel drifts nicely
If you want to slide around every turn here's your car lol
The on screen camera sounds like Tyler1 screaming in the camera lol
put some wide tires on the rear.. and take 1-2s off that lap time
i wonder if wider tires would have made a diff?

Eric Cooper do you know what reddit is?
Heard of it but not really
I'm guessing the Atom has adjustable pedals which can be moved backwards. There are cars with this function where the seat is fixed.
I know what I'm choosing in Forza!!
From the name, I was expecting it to go airborne.
I suspect that on a dry track, the 321hp supercharged Ariel Atom could be on a par with the Bugatti Veyron.
This is an UFO I would love to drive on the Alps!
With no side body panels, the views would be unobstructed, but drafty.
I was driven to the church on my wedding day in an ariel atom all suited and booted it gave me such an adrenaline rush the wedding ceremony was a doddle for me. Not so much for my wife to be though. 😂
Technically with a 3.0l v8 and twin turbos that engine can make 1500 hp.
"Like a Japanese lunatic." Stig was a Japanese race car driver at the time, it seems. Nice slip, Clarkson.
SaiiBoost or that Japanese lunatics drove AE86’s or some other equivalent and drifted everywhere, like Stiggy did when that comment was uttered.
