      Mainly because this might be horror, but it's Silent Hill/Outlast horror, not Resident Evil horror. You can't just slap the popular flavor of the month on your box and tell all your fans your going back to your roots. That's not how that works.

    Resident evil was never truly scary , not in the Silent hill kinda way. Resident evil was more of the B-movie , cheesy lines , brooding atmosphere , and most importantly ammo conservation scary. Not knowing if you had enough to deal with the next threat ahead , if maybe using that magnum ammo on the last zombie was such a good idea, that was Resident evil not this.
    This is not returning too it roots, this is turning RE into Silent fracking hills. While Silent was/is a great series it is not RE. Silent hills was/is the deep physiological thriller where gun combat was not a big of focus and had deep story line , while RE was the equivalent of dropping John matrix in a zombie infested town/house with limited ammo and brooding atmosphere and I love it for that.
    Every gamer saying oh they just going back to their roots , really needs to play the earlier games. This was never what RE was.

    • @JXZX1
      @JXZX1 Před 8 lety +11

      I think the main argument made is that, while this direction isn't exactly great, it's still closer to being true to RE than the modern third-person shooters are. At least now RE, a series that is explicitly called 'survival horror', can at least call itself 'horror'.

      thank you! finally someone gets what i've been saying! lol silent hill is a different type of horror than resident evil is. resident evil was never meant to be completely taken seriously, especially story wise. it's not meant to have some deep hidden meanings like the silent hill franchise. going back to what made resident evil popular to begin with is exactly what they need to do. rather than copy what everyone else is doing, be the leaders and innovators that they use to be! make everyone copy them! lol

    They already said, that
    1) Hero from the demo is not the hero of the game
    2) Development of RE7 began before Kojima shoved his P.T.. so if P.T. influenced the game, it wasn't like "man, now we have to make out game in first-person with a spooky house and supernatural".

    • @AkumetsuLord
      @AkumetsuLord Před 8 lety +9

      Any company can say they made something before something else and even then it had time to change direction like alot of games. Its a very weird how its very similar to P.T in reveal and demo. And even if yeah its not doing P.T/Silents Hills, its still being like all the other indie horror games that are SUPER POPULAR...with LPs.
      But still its just a demo showing its "SCARINESS" and won't be the same for the main game...like another demo or more like TEASER that was PLAYABLE ;3 but yeah Demo doesn't really show that so nothing wrong with people feeling like weird about it.

    I understand why some people would hate Resident Evil 6 (I personally enjoy RE6 too, though it is *far* from perfect), but i was honestly pretty disappointed to see _Capcom's P.T._ instead of a new Resident Evil game, as well as how much praise Capcom got for cloning Outlast and PT. I'm almost certain Capcom made this game just to shut up their fanbase, as well as get all sorts of money by reeling in the Lets Player crowd and the Amnesia-style of horror.
    Let's face it; they're nothing but greedy pricks willing to appease to fans and a wider demographic for the sake of profits and screwing over the consumer. Why else would RE6 have 4 different Campaigns, and Street Fighter 5 be specifically designed for Fighter Competitions and eSports? (no Story/Arcade mode, lack of features in general)

      Why is it nobody ever mentions Resident Evil Outbreak Files 1 & 2? They offered a unique horror experience that not even Left 4 Dead could match. If you played either game for yourself, then you'll know what I mean when having teammates online was a scary experience within itself, especially when you were split up or lost your way and being alone in a dangerous environment. It made for some tense journeys that were, at some points, downright scare-jump worthy! It's just too bad that Resident Evil 4 got all of the attention with it's action-focused gameplay, look how that went for RE5 and RE6...

    • @cordia96

      Because nobody remembers Outbreak. I remember the Elefant Boss in #2. But overall, the PS2xboxGC times are getting lost. We have a new gen of consoles, a new last gen and new, young players who don't know what a Prince of Persia is for example. Outbreak was cool, but came way too early. Barely anyone had his PS2 hooked up to the internet, broadband DSL internet wasn't that common in 2003. Thirteen years! Yeah, it's been a while. We're old fucks, Lewis.

    Same here about survival horror. I generally don't like games that make you just run away from the danger. But rather manage your ammo and stuff. For me, Resident Evil 1 is still the best survival horror game out there. Silent Hill comes close second.
    That's the stuff I want to see.
    You know, I wish they would try to do 2 player horror styled Resident Evil. Where you still have ammo and guns, but you would have to be careful and enemies would be pretty powerful (but you could defeat them with right tactics and using your bullets right).

      ***** I agree. Other horror games have you running from what's chasing you, which is scary for a little bit but after repeated playthroughs it gets old REAL fast. I've played Amnesia and Outlast, after a while of playing I just started getting more frustrated. I never got that with RE and SH. I was always nervous with every action I took, whether it came to wasting ammo on zombies, burning bodies in REmake or just wandering around and being afraid if the zombie I had just killed was going to get up as a crimson head yet. Nothing was scarier, to me than having NO ammo when Nemsis was chasing me and having to face those Regenerators.

    resident evil was truely unique survival horror and action horror series ruined by one of the most shitty fanbases in gaming who just couldn't accept innovation and that survival horror isn't the only genre of horror.
    RIP to a series that had a signature gameplay style unlike any other whether it was 1-3's emphasis on resource management or 4-6 emphasis on taking out foes in some of the most stylish ways possible with headshots and melee kills that's been turned into every other first person horror game ever made in the last 6 years.

      +ArsonistReaper i honestly just don't see this selling well at all. resident evil 4, 5, and 6 all did absolutely outstanding and are the best selling games capcom has ever across any game they've ever developed.
      the only thing that can save the series now is if the re2 remake were to have both a fixed retro camera and an over the shoulder because of how devisive the fanbase is now.

    • @CastleIsDoomed
      @CastleIsDoomed Před 8 lety +1

      TeryonTheHuman It'll sell well because it's going back to horror and apparently, that's all it takes for some fans. Unfortunately. Horror or not, that didn't stop me from playing and loving 5 and 6.
      As for RE2 Remake, I agree with you. It may have been a mod, but Resident Evil 4 worked really well in a fixed camera angle perspective.

    • @TeryonTheHuman
      @TeryonTheHuman Před 8 lety +4

      +ArsonistReaper it'll maybe platinum at 1 to 2.5 million, but it'll never come close to how the 6-9 million 4-6 made per game. the survival horror market just isn't as big as the action market they were in with 4-6.
      those games were able to blend action with horror in a way that couldn't be replicated easily it was something unique and that's why they did so well to the point where capcom struggles to ever get their games to sell that high again.
      and as far as the re2 remake as goes as long as they give me the option to player with over the shoulder cam like I'd prefer and do away with those stupid ink ribbons that's all i care about. Those are the only 2 things that would put a wrench in my enjoyment.

    • @CastleIsDoomed
      @CastleIsDoomed Před 8 lety

      TeryonTheHuman I wouldn't necessarily say that 5 and 6 were blending horror together with action very well, but they were still fun to play. I personally believe 4 was the only game that was able to mix the third person perspective and horror well, it kept the oppressive atmosphere that made the past games scary while having great action. Even the credits told a creepy and ominous story about what the village was like before Saddler came along.
      I wouldn't mind if they kept the ink ribbons, since that helped create a tense feeling when trying to ration supplies.A good remake fixes problems the original had, while adding in new things for returning players.

  • @FrMZTsarmiral
    @FrMZTsarmiral Před 8 lety +36

    Great points. My biggest fear is that this Resident Evil might end up being just another First-person-youtuber-bait horror title. Another problem with their approach is that for example, Silent Hill 1-3 had simple combat systems and the resource management is more forgiving than RE1, but the world of Silent Hill is extremely surrealistic and the writing is probably the best of the genre so you'll always be intrigued by the world even if the gameplay doesn't convince you, but the world of Resident Evil is more predictable and the writing isn't it's biggest strength, and the newer RE titles rely on tight combat and over the top action to keep the player entertained. REmake has tighter game design and better enemy/resource placement than Silent Hill but Mikami isn't working with Capcom anymore so I'm not really sure if this next Resident Evil will deliver since this won't have the intense action of newer titles, a classic RE game needs really tight game design to work, this type of FP horror title is an over saturated genre and I can't remember when was the last time that Capcom made a game with good writing.
    Tl;dr I want a good game, not another generic horror title that get a free pass because it's returning to it's roots or whatever.

  • @Dacho_Shaki
    @Dacho_Shaki Před 8 lety +10

    That's probably what pissed me off about people praising a ''bold' approach developers went with RE7. It's not creative, innovative nor bold for the series to take, it gives me the feeling that they're trying to cash in on other first person walking spookfest simulators since the VR is the talk of the town at the moment but it makes it a bit too generic and derivative.
    And people say the series has to evolve and move away from tank controls and fixed camera angles but we hadn't got those for more than a decade and it makes that style of game very misrepresented which makes first person horror games over-represented.
    If people want a VR experience with first person jump scare simulators they're just gonna go ahead and play Outlast or Layers of Fear with an Oculus Rift since most games may be supported by that device but we want Resident Evil to be Resident Evil. RE7 doesn't need to copy other games of the genre to regain the trust from fans or fame.
    It would have been a bolder move from Capcom to return to the classic style of the series in my opinion since we hadn't have that style for years. And that really worries me about the development of RE2 remake if they plan to ''modernize'' it. And it worries me about the future of the series if they plan on going for the first person route.
    Who knows, RE7 might even surprise me or prove me wrong at the end.
    Since the writer of Spec Ops The Line is in charge of a story, I hope he doesn't go all out oozing with pretentiousness or horrors of mankind or some crap because that's really not what Resident Evil is about.

    I was never a fan of "playing it safe". When you play it safe, you hold back on your creativity which makes for a bland product. In this case, a bland game that made little sense like RE7. This is why I adored RE5+6 so much: Capcom wasn't "playing it safe" with those, and they turned out great. Sure you can argue they're not "horror", but none of the RE titles were scary. You have to scare easy to fall for RE's brand of "horror". But what you can't argue is that these games were the product of Capcom trying something risky and new while keeping the lore, characters, and story of the series alive which is what I LOVED about them. Taking a risk may not always work and it will eventually result in a bad product, but that's not what taking a risk is about, taking risks allows us to work towards a higher goal than we would if we always took the safer route. You can't grow from mistakes if you never make them. (And NO, Re5 and 6 were not mistakes, if you ask fans of action games that like Resident Evil and aren't nostalgia-slaves of the series, they'd probably love them.)

    Dude I'm just REALLY excited for the Resident Evil 2 Remake so I can have my typewriters back ;u; to me they're one of the series main staples. I was so Salty when they took them out in 5, it's like taking out herbs, it just removes a chunk of the charm of RE as a whole.
    I know everyone likes to bitch and moan about the limited save feature, but RE4 kept them in but added unlimited saves, RE5&6 could of still kept them while just giving unlimited saving. For me, the removal of typewriters marked the start of the departure from the original soul of Resident Evil.

  • @2Doppelganger
    @2Doppelganger Před 8 lety +4

    Horror games have to not give you too much freedom as the latest entries Re5/6 have been doing. The feeling of being free and able to avoid danger whenever you want is what makes a game not so horrifying. Specially that normal mode difficulty in re6, after playing "no hope" difficulty I found after going back to normal that it is ridiculously easy, it was holding your hands through the whole game.
    Now if they take all of the options of fighting back and all of the freedom, we end up with a game that looks like outlast or maybe clock tower. They need to find a balance and deliver an amazing game, the thing is they are probably too greedy of a company to try new things out, they are afraid to risk, just look at how they copied P.T (not that its a bad thing). Just goes to show you how safe they want to play it.

  • @sonicadv27
    @sonicadv27 Před 7 lety +1

    Resi 7 is the exact opposite of playing it safe. It's a series going back to its horror roots but in a completely different fashion from the previous games, without any apparent connections to the established lore and at the risk of not meeting people's expectations. Even though it clearly got inspiration and motivation from PT.
    It was a pretty big gamble for a company that for years didn't have any clue of what their fans really wanted. It makes sense from our point of view but for Capcom it was a complete shot in the dark.

    Seems like there's a few people out there trying to copycat P.T.
    The thing that I will never understand about bandwagon hoppers when it comes to making something, is that they can never actually try to copy what made the original good.
    P.T. wasn't good because it was just first person in a dark house. That shit's been done a million times. P.T. was good because it was presented PERFECTLY. The way the scares were setup from the level design, to the lighting, to the sound design, was perfectly designed to create apprehension and fear. An example of this is having the door at the very end of the hall close as you approach it, and be locked if you try to open it. It builds apprehension, because now your only option is to look behind you, and you really, really, don't want to look behind you. Not to mention the fact that going through the exact same place makes it even better. It's familiarity. You can't get distracted by something different in the level design, only the lighting, or the elements that have shifted or moved. You're not thinking about "where am I going" you're thinking "what's going to happen this time" and that's what you SHOULD be thinking.
    Fuck, horror is more than rusty shit, or sticky shit, or dark shit. It's fostering an environment of apprehension and anxiety. To make the player or watcher get close to saying "fuck this I'm out."
    Copy that, not the setting, place, characters, time, or event. Jesus.

    Funny thing is, up til like the first 1/3 or maybe 1/2 of RE 4 I was still getting a fairly tense, spooky horror sense, but the idea was to find out how Umbrella was doing the zombie thing this time, and it was pretty inventive. The nature of the Spain-ish village filled with zombies, how they got the zombies in, finding out how it was slowly turned from a regular village to a cult-lead freaky mess. Then RE 5 and 6 happened with over the top gonzo action, and that's fine, just a different feel.
    I thought Revelations was the new "spooky" RE series, and with RE 7 trying to be spooky again I'm kind of excited to see them seemingly really trying to be a horror game, but then did Capcom ever do "scary" and not just "tense"?

  • @Gruntvc
    @Gruntvc Před 8 lety +3

    Hopefully the actual Resident Evil 7 game will actually be Resident Evil, unlike what this demo is suggesting. Capcom is utterly clueless at times, just loved how they were quick to point out how the demo has pretty much nothing to do with the actual game. Then why release a teaser like this if it does not reflect the actual game? P.T. was a unique case, didn't mean you had to copy that, Capcom.
    I didn't even find the demo the least bit scary as it never felt like you are in any kind of danger unless you specifically trigger the punch out ending. Alien Isolation was by far better and I hope RE7 takes after that FPS horror game than the stuff Outlast and Amnesia do.
    Frankly, a reboot might be in order for Resident Evil ala Wolfenstein the new order or Doom 2016. The Canon is way too overstuffed at this point and I'd love to return to the simpler times of being Stars going up against umbrella.

    "tight aiming in RE6" LMFAO! Controls were easily the worst part of RE6. Like I said before, RE6 really couldn't choose between being a deliberate horror game or a stylish action game, and the sluggish and awkward controls illustrate this point perfectly. Anyway though, I do actually agree with you for the most part on RE7. Even in RE1 there was a pronounced emphasis on combat. One had to choose between fighting or fleeing, and since one didn't have enough bullets to kill everything this created a very tense experience. The only change RE4 really made is that one had enough bullets to kill everything, but there was still tension since one had to shoot carefully and accurately since bullets weren't that plentiful. That and RE4 controls still made one have to make a choice between standing and shooting or running away, also increasing tension. RE7 so far just looks very uninspired. As some have said, it's gone from Gears of Evil to Silent Evil.

But you can totally blame Capcom for turning every game into an action shooter, trying to appeal to a larger demographic rather than having the integrity to still to their roots in any way just because being critically praised isn't enough.

    The final game of Resident Evil 7 will actually be in First Person, the director said so him self, and he feels the First Person perspective is more scary than third person, also folks you have to remember Resident Evil (1996) was supposed to be a first person horror game, but because of the limitations at the time, they switched the perspective we know today. Resident Evil 7 had to change for the better, because Resident Evil 5+6 were just gears of war clones, not horror even though I enjoyed the hell out of them, Resident evil 6 was just so much fun but my gripe was it was missing the scare factor of the originals, I'm sure Resident Evil 2 Remake will return to static camera angles and tank controls and of course pure survival horror with gorgeous updated graphics and maybe new weapons thrown in to the mix.

      Thats debatable.
      If you meant by straight up being a First Person game then, yea it did that and did it well and it was a change from what it once was or how it originally began.
      However the real reason why the "Its a return to its roots" side exists is because resident evil is much much MUCH more than JUST gameplay. Its....style, a theme, Its the tone that is set. Example:
      You boot up RE1, game establishes some fucked scary shit is going on in those mountains. STARS investigates, take heavy losses from scary dogs, and proceed into the creepy ass mansion in the middle of the goddamn woods that you know is evil and scary. What is going on in this mansion? Find out and play. Scary thing obviously happen
      RE7: Wife goes missing, gets scary tape, gets ominous letter, goes to find wife in swamp, finds a scary mansion that is totally evil looking with cultish decorations all around, makes way into said creepy estate and finds scary video tape. Yadda Yadda yadda then BAM YOUR POSSESSED WIFE CUTS YOUR HAND OFF WITH A CHAINSAW AFTER YOU JUST PUT A AXE IN HER NECK.
      See it basically revolves around the setting this time just like RE1 with the story just happening in said setting. Which is why i agree when it comes up that RE7 is going back to its roots in horror, because a creepy ass mansion is where it all started.
      If I were directing RE8 the next setting would be a whole new town with TWO characters stories. Basically: Find the key points in RE2 that made it such a great game and apply those ideas with a fresh coat of paint. No more government conspiracies, no more military ops, no more overblown science. Just grab a normal RESIDENT of the town thats a cop, firefighter, doctor (basically a respected occupation that people look up to) and have them stumble into "Raccon City pt 2".

    About the missing flair: I actually read an interview with RE7s director and he said, that this time the outline of the script is written inhouse and then handed off to an english speaking screenwriter, who then writes the actual dialogue etc. Disappointing to say the least, and definitely explains why the Resident Evil flair is missing with this installment...

    Happy to see a video that captures my feelings on the direction RE 7 is taking as well. I read an article saying it's fine if Resident Evil had cheap thrills and that it would work because people would still eat it up. That doesn't sound like RE to me in the slightest because it wasn't just horror that made the series what it is, something you nailed on the head with the video. The comments section in most RE 7 Teaser/Demo's I see just attack people who even dare to give the demo/teaser any criticism, it's ridiculous.
    Either way, I'm still gonna wait and see what RE 7 has to offer. I just hope it doesn't lose the spirit that made RE what it is, but I doubt most other people would because as long as it's going back to horror, it's fine, no matter what direction it takes.

      501god Dan I'm sure it is, but WE HAVE seen RE7 b4, it's not some new and original idea, hell, tbh, I agree with what Brit said, it would've been WAY more interesting to see a old Resi-style game, instead of Silent Resident Evil Outlast Hills 7

      I think shooting being clunky is one of the core of the older RE games. Going back to roots, you need to play it like the originals using bullets as a way to stun enemies instead of damaging them.

      Turn up the controller speed 1 notch and turn off controller acceleration, that seemed to help me slightly.
      Have finished RE7 recently, really enjoyed it, but i found the puzzles and all kind of easy. I did play on normal mode as i had not pre-ordered and could not start on Madhouse mode, but overall i felt the experience while good felt sort of simplified for the VR crowd.
      There was never really any point during the game i ever felt lost and had to think where i had to go to progress.
      However, as Capcoms first attempt at a First Person Horror game, its very good. The atmosphere is very tense during the entire game and im really hoping they will continue on making more RE games which are first person, but i hope they put slightly more effort into the puzzles.

    In hindsight, most of TGBS's concerns are tackled and are present. Great game, though I miss the perfectly sculpted, sexy and handsome/beautiful men and women like Chris and Ada, people here are ugly as sin, great game though and awesome gameplay, totally shits on any 'horror' game that is actually just a walking sim for casuals like Outlast and Amnesia or a jumpscare puzzle game like FNAF.

    Always good to see a new video from you

  • @viewtiful1doubleokamihand253

    I have this golden rule about video games:
    - When making a original video game you, as a developer, can do LITERALLY what ever you want with it. It is yours, it is your creation and it is your vision that counts.
    - BUT the moment you try to expand this game into a series you are basically STUCK in the constraints of the original game, you have basically no right to change it drastically, you can only improve what you already have. Because it's not yours any more - you have created something people find endearing, engaging and fun in a unique way and now they depend on you continuing to do what you were doing the first time.
    There are gaming series that stick to their guns from the very start, not going out of their way drastically: Basically any fighting series, Yakuza series, Musou games, Doom/Wolfenstein, and so many more.
    And there are others, who instead of dying with dignity, staying same as they always were up until the end got changed and altered: Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Devil may Cry and so on...
    There are people who depend on certain gaming series to bring them back the same fun they had years before, those people depend on them, love and cherish them not because of the name, but because of the tone, the character and style.
    I am a Silent Hill fan, I know loss way too well, but what happened to it is better then watching it degrade with no end in sight.

    • @TheCyclicGamer
      @TheCyclicGamer Před 4 lety +1

      While I respect your opinion, I honestly think that it's also wrong. Not every series that stuck to their guns from the very start didn't do well; Call of Duty being a prime example. Just because a series starts out with a particular style doesn't mean it should stick to that style for the rest of it's existence, what matters is if the gameplay and narrative elements that made the series popular in the first place are still there.
      For example, while I don't have anything against Fixed Camera Angles, I also don't think they were some revolutionary form of camera work. For one, the style is very limiting in terms of gunplay and level design, and while they do make for some great pre-rendered graphics that pushed beyond the hardware limitations at the time, those same limitations no longer exist, so why keep using a workaround that is no longer required?
      So when RE4 made the shift from survival horror to action horror, was the problem because of the camera shift or was it because the rules and mechanics of the game dedicated it to be action-horror and not survival horror like the originals? Because giving RE1, 2, and 3 OTS or FPS controls would not have changed the fact that they were still survival horror games, and giving RE4, 5 and 6 Fixed Camera Angles would not have changed the fact that they were action-horror games.
      Your example with Silent Hill, the reason the western games flopped was because they had been trying to recapture the spirit of Silent Hill 2 (Clueless dork goes into haunted town with dark secret, confront dark secret, win prize) which is wrong. Granted, if Silent Hills actually developed into a full game with the narrative of the P.T demo, it probably would've ended more of a Silent Hill 2 clone (In terms of Narrative) than RE7 ever did.

    According to the development time line this was in development during PT's development and it was just a coincidence that they looked so similar however there is always the chance that could be corporate spin and shameless false number charts.
    But seriously the skepticism was crazy in the lead up to this game. I loved that demo and was gripped by every addition they made to it up to the games release.

    It's always amusing to me how much people loved RE4 when it first came out and even praised the QTEs. Nowadays, it's become such a dirty word that we're now trying to actively avoid it.

    • @Aladelicous
      @Aladelicous Před 8 lety +1

      People actually praised the QTE's? I think maybe cause it made the cutscenes more interactive, but as time went on, it feels more like dev's are replacing good gameplay with QTE's.

    • @ZhouTie47
      @ZhouTie47 Před 8 lety

      (Legitimate fan of QTEs) I find that they are one of those gameplay options that can either hurt a game or help it. For me, the QTEs in the RE series have been a mediocre to good use of them. A very good use can be seen in Asura's Wrath, where it simply extends the fun into the cutscenes. Or in God of War where it aids in the feeling of tearing someone's eye out.. But then there are others like Bayonetta (1) where they seemingly come out of nowhere and kill you. Or like in (good example, terrible game) Ride to Hell: Retribution where it adds nothing but frustration to something that could have been a lot simpler and quicker.

    • @Aladelicous
      @Aladelicous Před 8 lety

      IsaacAmrenZhouTai There are times when I can tolerate QTE's, but they are basically breaking down gameplay to it's simplest components. See a button, press a button. There's no room for choice or player expression and ultimately it's basically just pressing 'play' to continue forward with the cutscene.
