According to a lot of people, Yamashita plays this all wrong. This is not how Bach should be played they say, this is not how the guitar should be played... They might be right, but when I listen to this it always moves me. Yamashita always moves me! I think he's fantastic. But I also love the way Glenn Gould and Segovia play Bach, so maybe I don't care for the things the critics care for. I think Yamashita, Gould and Segovia are fantastic artists, because when they play they touch my soul more than other musicians do.. And I love that. They might not play their music in a historically correct fashion, or in good taste or whatever, but there's fire in their performance! They play with passion. There are a lot of musicians who play the way the critics want it, so I don't see why it's a problem people like Yamashita play the way they want...

I can asure u that the smashing majority of these dumbasses can't play 1% of what Yamashita is capable, its just about jealousy. And before anyone think's this is not real, just pay attention at the Academic's teachers behave, they suck on this subject. Historical performance is something very new with historical instruments and still is something "dark" and distant to most of non historical instruments, classical guitar for instance. If u say to cellist that these BWVs was written for a spalla not a gamba instrument they will scold u. Most of classical guitarists don't have a enought knowledge of Baroque, they start to study this period by the "last" composer, I can say Bach is the guy u ll study after u really know what Baroque is. So, who "justifies" any critic to Yamashita playing Bach by historical blablabla mostly don't have any idea of what is talking about.

Yes Ive been searching this video too.. i think the first time it was there on youtube in 2006 .. This is stunning, perhaps one of the most favorite music of Bach on youtube, Yamashita played beautifully.. Regardless what the schollars said, he has proven that music should be like life, an explossion of freedom.. This BWV was written for spalla but he played as if Bach wrote it for guitar.. the whole piece and every passage subject and everything is just beautiful !.. all about bach, the energy surrounds everyone listening to Yamashita plays on the stage, i think many people feel the goosebumbs.. he is playing and breathing just like transfering the fresh air of meditation to you to go up high fly through time back to the 16-17th centuries.. the majestic and the atmosphere is phenomenal.. Thank you for sharing the video !

Among the many renditions of this prelude on the guitar that I have seen here, Yamashita's is the only one that makes the music seem as if it were written for the guitar. Yamashita understands the uniqueness of and has exploited the musical potential of individual strings. The last things on his mind are ease of playing, open strings and initial positions. His playing covers practically all frets across the fingerboard and in many instances he keeps a musical line on the same string, moving along it up and down. (Segovia does exactly this in the 1007 Prelude) Yamashita's playing simply takes one's breath away. Utterly, utterly beautiful!

This is remarkable in so many ways. Yamashita sets very high standards on this piece for any one daring to face the work after him. Well played and articulated, bringing a number of voices out of that Ramirez. Don´t look for simple clean aesthetics here, this is a very intense performance revealing many sides of the composition. Great work indeed!

The thing I love most about Yamashita is that his music is just that: music. You could compare this to performances by any of the great players from more "traditional" instruments (even though guitar is pre-historic) and he is right up there. This simply transcends guitar. I think Bach would have proudly written for Yamashita had they been alive at the same time.

Great to read all this...I was always thrilled by Yamashita's live performances decades ago and got all his vinyls. Fantastic Nocturnal by Britten etc. Still after years it's nice to enjoy Bach's affects without this overwhelming egos. So I can understand both his fans and his critics. I like Hopkinson Smith's renderings of Bach. He opened me the door to the chaconne...fantasy and respect or better "Demut" as we say in german.
