Massacre of Glencoe (Glencoe, House of Macdonald etc) from Scotdisc GRETNA to GLENCOE

  • First recorded by Nigel Denver, later by Alastair McDonald, thereafter hotly pursued, it seems, by everyone else, Jim McLean`s song of the massacre of the Glencoe Macdonalds on the13th February 1692. A relatively small affair (by Scottish standards of massacres) but one that has captured the romantic imagination & become a Scottish "favourite".

One does not have to be Irish, Scottish, or a MacDonald to truly be moved by this song. I have ridden through Glencoe and seeing the place brings life to this song

This was one of the first Scottish songs I learned a dozen years ago. I learned it at the same time as I learned Melville Castle, also as sung by Alastair. Have always had a special place in my heart for im and his singing ever since.

Requested this song when Alastair McDonald played in a Nairobi hotel in 1976. It was a very intimate atmosphere, and he sang it very quietly and with so much feeling that when he ended, for a few seconds, you could hear a pin drop as most women, and many men, choked back their tears.
