Hard to believe that 56 years later, I'm still in love with this song.

my 11th grade English teacher introduced me to this song this past year and I instantly fell in love with it. So much so that I learned how to play it for him and f=performed it on the last day of class. This man who was in his late 60's had tears in his eyes when I finished, and when I tell you I have never before felt so loved, respected, and appreciated by a positive male role model in my life, I absolutely mean it. If you see this Dr.B just know you made an impression on me that will last my lifetime. Thank you for everything you did for me this year, you are a phenomenal teacher and an amazing man

Wow...what a good teacher you had at that time. A wise and smart and talented teacher...you were lucky 🙂 Just keep the good work on 🙂
In 1973, I was 8 years old, and I had this really cool hippy teacher who would bring his guitar in and play during recess. I often wonder what ever happened to him, and would have loved to thank him for the positive effect he had on me.
I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this song. It was 1965, I was about 12 or 13, and my mom and I heard it on the car radio (we only had AM radio) one night on a little back road near our house. It was as if my mind opened and angels flew out of it. Donovan became my muse for years after that and I never looked back. Thank you Donovan, for everything you brought to music.

This is such a beautiful song. I think back in the 60’s and 70’s we didn’t realize how good performers had to be to actually have their songs recorded. They didn’t have autotune or synthesizers. It was all pure talent. Thank you Donovan for your lovely songs with lovely words.
One of the greatest folk songs ever written. He wrote it for his friend and mentor Bob Dylan, who is often mistaken as the composer. Haunting, simple, incredible song that will last forever.
Dylan was never Donovan's mentor, where on earth did you get that from? If anyone, his mentor was Woody Guthrie.
He wrote this about a love he never had, until he met his wife a year later. What are you talking about?
The melody is similar to part of "My Back Pages" plus Donovan is clearly imitating Dylan's voice, LOL. You can see how different he sounded on "Mellow Yellow." He found his own voice, in other words.
here I am, crying with stage 4 cancer, just wanted to love somone, but couldnt.
Love a dollar for everytime I've busked this great song. Now I write my own songs influenced by this song and Donovan. Still busking at 70.

For me Donovan epitomised what the 60s was all about, self expression, love and innocents.

They play this in the grocery store every morning, It gets very quiet whenever it comes on! Still as magical as ever!

@@jarichards99utube One of his other songs that seemed so meaningful was To Try For The Sun. I went through a period in my young life that I felt very alone and I could only assume that Donovan himself carried some heavy loads.
When rain has hung the leaves with tears, that line brings tears to my eyes, how beautiful
I re-discovered this song recently after a friend died suddenly. This line brought me some comfort. It is an incredibly beautiful song!
This is real music, genuine talent, that we will never see from the modern entertainers with their million dollar stage shows. This is high-class poetry put to music - one of my all-time favourite songs.
I am 65 now, i wish i could go back in time, less problems and a lot happyer then
I am 65 this month and I yearn for the past. At least the one that I remember. 🥺
I'm the same age as you and remember those times with fondness. However, I also remember the fear I had in the early 60's that the world would end with nuclear holocaust!
@@marks3970 Funny how I don't remember the Cuban missile crisis, the execution of James Hanratty (probably just as well), but I do remember many of the notable events in 1963, such as the harsh winter, which started around Boxing Day 1962, the advent of the Beatles, England v W.Indies (what a formidable team the Windies were back then), Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies (though what the fuss was all about was over this eight years old's head), the Great Train Robbery, and then, sadly, the assassination of JFK, followed by seeing LHO shot seemingly live on TV. In the cricket season I remember turning on our wireless to get news of the latest scores after I had come home from school. There was, as Derek Guyler would say in It's a Square World, just one snag, I had to remember to turn on the wireless a few minutes in advance for the valves to warm up, otherwise I would miss the scores! Happy days...well, most of them anyway!
There are benefits to being 63 years old. To have been able to enjoy this song for so many of those years is one of them. Poetry, pure and simple. A straight-forward song about love unrequited. Poignant, yet uplifting. True classics are those that hold up over decades, scores, certainly centuries. This is one of them.
Well put. I'm 66 next month and I refuse to be/act old! I can do 10K runs (er, jogs).

In the chilly hours and minutes
Of uncertainty
I want to be
In the warm hold of your loving mind
To feel you all around me
And to take your hand
Along the sand
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
When sundown pales the sky
I want to hide a while
Behind your smile
And everywhere I'd look, your eyes I'd find
For me to love you now
Would be the sweetest thing
T'would make me sing
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Diddy di dee dee diddy diddy
Diddy diddy diddy dee dee dee
When rain has hung the leaves with tears
I want you near to kill my fears
To help me to leave all my blues behind
For standin' in your heart
Is where I want to be
And long to be
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
