What Summer's reply should have been: "Right, and now I've been accepted to five Ivy League schools, while you'll end up at some crappy state university majoring in Communications"
What’s wrong with communications at a state school? You can do a lot with that. It’s still a degree. A better reply would have been “at least I won’t be working at Big Lots for the rest of my life because I cared more about studying than my popularity.”
Summer has said in interviews that in her teen years she was very shy, isolated, and didn't know how to express herself to people. So, this role isn't TOTALLY out of the realm of possibility for her. I do agree that the message in this scene is.... broken.

dude glau's acting is spot on, its the script that sucked balls. at first she acts timid and boring because thats what her character is supposed to represent. once she gets word raped by the "it" crew the script illogically calls for an epiphany in which glau's character has a change of heart and gladly supports the people that just bashed her.
Not sure why that girl would be considered a loser. If you're an attractive female, you're pretty much automatically cool in middle school / high school.
