It's not always that simple, there aren't always obvious warning signs kids keep secrets from their parents, and anything you think kids can't get into they can!
Did they say the parents bought him the gun or even knew he had it? If he had a fake ID and there was a gun store owner being lax about their due diligence the parents may not have even known. You can't just assume the parents are ultimately to blame.
