  • In my nightmare everything's wrong
I'm waiting for love, but you come along
You smile, you wave, you kiss me, Ciao
But you seem too happy to see me somehow
Then the sky falls in on my head
Your nails grow long, your eyes turn red
You say "Forever, dear, and a day"
You swear that you're never going to go away
And my feet won't move to run the other way
And I can't wake up to save my life
Oh I can't wake up to save my life
In my nightmare you forgive me
The cruellest gift you could ever give me
You say that you understand me now
But your eyes say "Brother, I'll get you somehow"
And then the lightning streaks across the room
You smell like something fresh from the tomb
You squeeze too hard, you insist on kissing
When it seems like half your face is missing
And you hair's turned into reptiles hissing
And I can't wake up to save my life
Oh I can't wake up to save my life
Things I done make my dreams go bad
Like Borstal boys coming home to dad
What you reap so shall you sow
Now feets don't fail me, go man go
'Cause I can't wake up to save my life
Oh I can't wake up to save my life
    No I can't wake up
    No I can't wake up
    Oh I can't

Any opportunity to hear Danny Thompson and Richard Thompson play together in any of their collaborative forms is a fine evening of entertainment indeed.

Sharp eyes! I got to go back stage at a RT show once. Didn't have the guts to even go close to the man himself, but summoned up enough nerve to talk (briefly) to Danny Thompson (playing bass here) and say how I had been a fan for years. Nice guy.

I like the Medusa reference. Richard Thompson is truly one of the finest guitarists and lyricists around.

God, how does he do it? Funny, creepy, AND touching... hostile AND self-accusing... AND a foot-stomping, sing-along party song, all in the space of 3 minutes.

Same here. I heard him play on the Hand of Kindness tour and I've enjoyed his music ever since.

Love the reference to Medusa with "And your hair turns into reptiles hissing!" Phenomenal lyricist and guitarist.

@@RomyArena Shoot Out The Lights has some of Richard and Linda Thompson's best songwriting.

@yohei72 Anyway, according to the concert review, Thompson was asked why at age 61 (or so) he still keeps writing and performing. His response was that you don't expect artists, actors, or writers to give up when they're 60. Why should a musician?
Anyway, can you recommend some good Richard Thompson CDs? Yes, I still collect CDs.

@yohei72 I saw him in concert at the Byahm Theatre in Pittsburgh a couple of years ago, and the funny thing was I really didn't know much about him. But I walked away a fan. Oddly enough a couple of weeks later I saw Robert Plant & Band of Joy who did a great version of Thompson's "House of Cards."

@yohei72 Ever hear his version of Britney Spears's "Oops I Did it Again"? He both satarizes and pays homage to it.

When and where was this, please?

  • @yohei72

@BassPlayerSusan Hasn't everybody heard that? No?
He had interesting things to say about it in a radio interview I heard a few years back. Seemed ambivalent about the song, although he thought it was more interesting than it's generally given credit for. I think he also said something about Britney Spears's songs beings produced in the same factory that ABBA's were.
