if you want to have 53 stitches at the start of row 2 you should skip just one stitch at the start of row 1, am I right?

Make 54 chains. After that you will start in the second chain and make 53 single crochet in the back bumps. At the end of this row you make chain 1 and turn your work. You will start at the second stitch again and make 53 single crochet. And so on.
