    Kate: Writes all day, gives herself essays to write, reads, works out, takes the dog for a walk and sleeps early.
    Me: Gets a drink, opens the laptop, drinks the drink, closes the laptop, heads to sleep.

    I think week one went really well, I was pretty happy with it but yeah, I ended up counting a lot more words in a lot more places lol. I keep having to remind myself that it's going to be a whole year so its okay to be kind to myself when I'm having a bad writing day and that every word counts towards this giant goal. Which I did decide to up it from a half million to the full thing. Also, I started rereading my first finished draft and I've had so many ideas and thoughts occur to me and not just for that book but the series as a whole and I am so excited for it!!
    On another note, I think it was me. I remember just replying to the email with my word so uh yeah. Good luck painting the house and congrats on the move!

    I did Milwordy in 2016 by accident! ...Writing entirely fanfiction. And that was also when I finished most of my long fics. I was going to do it this year, but between Covid and health problems I've uhhhh fallen behind. I'm on track to write 750,000 words this year, though. So that's something! Go Kate!

  • @nataliewatson257
    @nataliewatson257 Před 3 lety +15

    Actually, some folks *have* done a million in a month - so it’s mind-blowing but not impossible. I know of at least two successes and several other attempts. NaNo user Kateness blogged her million word NaNo in 2009 and I read through those posts again every couple years to inspire/horrify myself.

    • @charley_warlzz
      @charley_warlzz Před 3 lety +3

      H... how?? If you only slept for six hours a day and never took anymore breaks, you’d need to write 1851 words an hour, every hour. That’s so much!

    • @nataliewatson257
      @nataliewatson257 Před 3 lety +4

      She blogged about it here: kateness.wordpress.com/category/nanowrimo-09/ But the tl;dr is that yes, she pretty much did nothing but write for 30 days (and started with a 50k day one to give herself some extra padding, and had outlines for everything before she started, and was already a high-output writer). And the writing wasn't even crap. I read several scenes from it and remember thinking "Yep, this feels like a perfectly normal first draft."
      The 1,800/hour part I can do -- that's pretty close to my cruising speed on a marathon day (two 15 min sprints at ~900 each, one 5 min break, one 20 min break, repeat all day). It's the sheer number of hours at the keyboard that I can't imagine. I hit the wall at 6 hours of writing in a day and completely max out at 10 hours. If I tried to do that for 30 consecutive days, I'd be a gibbering mess by the end.

    Dig the videos, KC! I'm curious if you've ever thought about switching how you frame your daily writing goals up - writing for words instead of time? One thing I've noticed is that I do all my best / most productive drafting by the word (ie: hit X words per day) and all my editing by time (I hate editing and it's more about getting it right than just headbutting through word counts). An added bonus is that you can work to increase your work count per session, whereas if you write by time, you're a bit hamstrung by, like, the finite nature of time.

      Thinking about it though, if you write 5 days a week you need about 4000 words per day to give yourself a little buffer for sick days or self care days beyond the weekend.
      If you write 6 days a week, you wind up needing 3400 words per day and you have approximately 13 additional days (beyond your weekly day off) to use as you see fit.

    Love a good writing session in the rain. Had some of that here in Massachusetts yesterday
    Week one was good. Got more done than I was planning one - the digital detox I took last weekend definitely helped with the writing. No adjustments so far, even though I didn't make my writing goal a couple days. My epiphany was that one day I finished writing for the night, came back the next morning and realized I had ended the scene about 50 words from where I wanted it to end

The good news is that by reading some stuff to remind myself of where I'm going and allowing myself to count all of that I got ahead which is keeping my stress level down at least for now. I've also decided to count things I type in comments to encourage myself to interact with people even if it is just in the comments on CZcams as I'm a bit on the shy side.

    Week 1 went a lot better than week 2 for me. Mostly because I could invest a lot of time into pure First Draft words, which requires less thinking for me than outline or braindump words so I could do more. I finished my 1st draft though, so Outlining is a lot slower for me because I need to think and re-think more. Also, I had to do some self-inflicted extra work because I was being stupid.
    But I did have some story epiphanies! Some fun plot twists (which I need to add foreshadowing and all to the draft when I edit it)! A few ideas for short stories! A few ideas for blogs! So yeah, I will continue onwards.

    To write a million words a month youd need to write 1388 words per hour for 24h straight. Just letting u know i did the math...

    Hello comment section! Dose anyone know what writing program Kate uses? I am in my Sophomore year of High School and was thinking about writing some short fiction/scifi stories. Any help would be very helpful. Thanks and good luck Kate and You on your writing journey.

    "A million words in a month" gurrrl people have done that during NaNo. I forgot what the numbers are to actually do that but in theory it is possible. Those are the people that I lowkey doubt but at the same it's like, 'you go you funky little writing machine.'

    I too am behind where I'd like to be by a lot more than I'd want to be TBH But you cant always contol chronic pain issues. I did think ahead and give myself about 8 days a month for days off to deal with pain or for whatever other reason. So I guess in reality Im not behind but still lol Congrats on the move I hope the reno is smooth. Keep in mind this is a YEAR long marathon not a one month sprint. You got this, I believe in you! (this goes for anyone who needs to hear it)

    Pretty much, for about half of this past year, I've been writing fanfiction/original fanfiction on and off. Well, after seeing this video, I decided to collect all of my google docs into one document. I've only written 200,000 words and none of the twenty-some fics are complete. 😂😂😂
    Well, now it's the new year, should I give it a try?

    How long would you recommend a writing sprint be, if your writing to a one-word prompt?

    Hi Kate! 2 questions: is it too late to join in on Milwordy? and do you have a link for the passion planner you're using and the printable sheets? Your link in the description seems to just go to a standard dot grid journal, Thank you in advance. I enjoy your videos! Writing in San Antonio...

    I started to write my million words in a year in January, and so far I have 728k words. Next month during nano I will hopefully get the rest of the needed words for the million, that in December I can just write one more 50k/month, as that is the lowest monthly wordcount all year for me.

    I would love your thoughts on short stories. Like, what your process is for those VS novels. I have a really hard time with short stories, so I'm curious how others do them who also write longer things. :)
