How Motorcycles DAMAGE Smart Phones

- In this video Fabien talks about how the vibrations from the motorcycle handle bars in your phone can damage the camera in your phone. This is mainly thanks to a statement released by Apple that vibrations on motorcycle cycles can upset the Optimal Image stabiliser in the camera of the iphone.

It’s most prevalent on later iPhones when they introduced a more sensitive image stabilisation. Think it’s around 10.
I had an IPhone XR which had its image stabilisation go squif.
That’s right around the same time everyone had the issue.
I’ve now got Quadlocks damper which turns all the tiny vibes into big floppy ones lol with my new iPhone. So to recap your current phone should be fine as you are. If you go for iPhone 10 or newer get the Quadlock with damper unit.
Awesome thank you for the info! Very helpful 👍
Completely right, we solved our problems too with the quadlock damper. I recommend to buy also the integrated charger. It makes live so much easier.
You simply guessed, because OIS (optical image stabilization) was introduced on the iPhone 7.
@@what7541 and did it remain the same version of equipment or did improve/change/upgrade/alter through the following generations of the phone?
So is it possible that say the iPhone 10’s for example was different to the 7?
And if that is the case does my comment hold water again?
It's possible. You're just saying it as if you know for sure, even giving a recap to your comment for the OP of the channel.
And whether the newer iPhones have more sensitive image stabilization or not (I don't know where you got that information), it probably doesn't make that much of a difference when riding a motorcycle for thousands of km. It's OIS one way or another.
Found this video because my camera died today thanks to my DRZ-400 had my Rockform mount on the bike for maybe 2 weeks. Wide lenses will focus, zoom lenses will focus but the normal camera looks like I’m taking pictures through a mirage. The phone also makes a weird sound while the camera is in use.
Sorry to hear
Yup, found out the hard way. Made a ride for 50km on my XJ900s with my iPhone 11 mounted on the handlebar. Never knew it would destroy my back camera. Phones are robust build but they fail on vibrations. Thought I did the right thing to buy a solid aluminum phone holder. Now I know better.
I’ve heard the quad lock mount is good. It’s advertised everywhere. But I still think nowadays even the best phone mounts won’t stop vibrations from damage the cameras in our phones
I learnt the hard way. 1000% you need the vibration damper
I’ve seen this mentioned previously online also, so it’s one of the reasons I don’t have a handlebar mount on my FZ6 for my phone. Instead I use an Oxford Q4R tank bag which has a phone pocket on the top of it (and I use an iPhone too).
Nice one. That sounds like a sensible compromise. My iPhone 7 has been fine for a while but I think it’s because the camera isn’t very sophisticated. When I upgrade, having it on the tank bag could be the way forward. 👍
My iPhone 6s Plus failed in August this year. The camera lens would start to vibrate when the camera was turned on. It would take blurry images. I did change to a stiffer cellphone mount in June. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the failure. I have been mounting phones on my bike for eight years, and this was the first time I had a problem.
Interesting thanks for the info. So far I’m getting about 50/50. Some have problems, some don’t. But if I upgrade to a newer expensive phone, it doesn’t seem worth the risk. Thank you
So I’ve always had a quad lock are use the wireless charging head and the dampener.
I’ve had this quad lock on my
KTM125
Kawasaki 650,
Kawasaki ninja, 1000 sx se
Versus 1000 SE GT 2023 my latest bike, and had no problems with it at all
Interesting thank you. I have been guilty of using cheap phone holders
I have used many android phones on my bikes from pocophone f1 to my now OnePlus 6T but I have always use the ultimate add-ons tough case and their mounts and charging kit and never ever had a problem.
Thank you. It seems getting the proper mounts and additional hard ware could be key. I’ll bare that in mind when upgrading.
Ultimate add-ons are very good their main office I in Scotland and do case specific for apple and Samsung and then universal for all other brands I have a ball mount bolted to one of the 4 handlebar bolts the have a 4" extender the phone case attachment. That way I can place it any where I have an 2006 fz6n ( black frame and engine).
Poco f1 dont have ois ,6t have
Personally I'd never ride with my phone on my handlebars, too much of an unnecessary distraction, most of the time I turn my phone my off when riding because I want it to be me and the bike with no distractions, great video tho, I'm sure it will be helpful to people
I completely understand that. Years ago I did a whole tour of Spain with only maps and managed fine. Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the video anyway 👍
Thanks for the information!! Does it efforts Android phone's👀
I’m not sure. I can imagine that they have similar systems that stabilise images. But I have not seen any official statement like that from Apple
It would depend on the phone - if they have optical image stabilization it means the actual camera lens is "floating" and the systems that move the lens are fairly delicate.
If it only has digital image stabilization you're likely fine.
Hi Fab and thank you for your video ! Here's my own experience with a Xiaomi Mi11 : The component that manages the camera died on the mainboard of that phone (probably too much work with vibrations)... The lens change didn't solve the problem.
Thank you! Seems to effect all or many phone with image stabilisation
My iphone 13 gyro has completely stopped working now due to using it on my motorcycle overtime with a phone mount
Sorry to hear. I’ll be keeping my new phone well away from
I had this problem with my iPhone 11 Pro, the camera image is unable to focus and you can even hear a rattling sound the camera makes trying to focus. It was probably caused on a single cylinder 500cc motorcycle.
Cheers for the info. Recently I got an iPhone 14 and based on this I will definitely not attach it to my bike
my biggest issue is i am afraid my phone will fall off the bike so i use a camera like a gopro or a camera that has wifi to my phone which are designed to handle the shocks
I understand stand that concern. I’m lucky in that I have never had an issue with that at all. Years and years ago I came off a 125cc bike when my phone was attached and it stayed on firmly.
Buggered my HTC M8 camera back in 2017…
Seems like it happens on all phones
Same thing, i had an iphone xr and the camera got blurry, i took it to repair and after a month happened again. I have a 250cc but it does vibrate to much. Now i use a huawei y9 2018 to navigate cause i deliver food and my iphone on my pocket to share data.
Cheers sounds one a smart way to do it
Any issues with it? Does it not transfer that much vibration if it's in your pocket?
@JustAnotherFeederJungler I think the pocket quite a lot of dampening compared to being mounted directly to the bike
I would be more concerned with extreme hot sun like here in Australia. The UV rays will damage the screen.
Didn’t think of that. But good point. Over here in the UK… not an issue 😂
My 8 month old s23 ultra telescope lens and ois is screwed up after using it on a phone holder. Gonna bring it to the service center to do a camera replacement. Currently using an a25 5g for navigation
Cheers for the info. I recently got a new iPhone, I think I’ll keep it off my bike
No problem! I am doing food delivery on my motorcycle so I'm on the for long hours everyday. I'm planning to replace my Zedge phone with one that comes with a vibration dampener.
Thank you for the comment, I am worried about my S23 having the same issue, thus didn't apply a phone holder.
Yep had both mine and my mrs phones destroyed on the bikes, luckily apple replaced them as it is within the first year. I had the 11 pro and she the XR. Im now using the 12 which doesn't seem to have any issues.
Mounted on a RAM holder
Ram holder seems to sort everyone out
I use the rokform mount and phone case that twist on it's a nice setup but expensive over 100 for mount and 50 or so for case
Cheers I’ll look into that 👍
A buddy of mine had his iphone 12 ripped. It is for optical stabiliser and not sure iphone 7 have one. But 11, 12, 13,14 are hit hard. Samed goes with latest samsungs. Fazer is listed in bikes that can cause damage on quadlock site :)
just saw when video was posted XD my bad.
I personnally went with a givi tank bag with map/phone pocket just to be sure as i own an iphone 11, and rather invest in an intercom for gps guidance instead of a bar mount as bag gps tend to force you to leave road from eyesight. I will have intercom for christmas... :3
Thank for the feedback! Thanks for watching. Tank bag is a great idea. Not quite as user friendly but it must cut out the vibrations all together
The first iOS 8 I rode with for years. Got an i11 pro and within a month my new phone was broken. They did replace it but now I don’t put my phone on the bike. I ride a 750 shadow.
Thank you this is useful to know. Good they replaced it at least 👍
It's true, I had an iPhone 8 on a BMW F650 GS mono, which vibrates a lot and I use it 70% off-road and I never had a problem, but I changed to an iPhone 11 and it lasted a week and the stabilizer failed. camera, luckily it was under warranty so they changed it, now never on the bike again ...
Thank you. All makes sense. I seem safe with my iPhone 7. But next phone won’t go on the bike. 👍👍
@@FabMotorbikes ...wise decision hahaha
I'm just an old guy, but this kid would have more creds with me if he turned his cap around
properly.
Fair enough. 🤣 noted. I appreciate your time watching any way. 😊
Will it be a problem on a 80cc scooter??
I believe so
Is it happening too in cars?
I recently got at iPhone 14. I have used in my car (not my bike) and have had no problems
It happened with my Iphone 12 PM.
Oh no! Sorry. I’m gonna keep my new phone off of it I think
Yeah. Great. My Huawei P30 got fcked too today. I'm driving a 125ccm bike and did not have any problems for some months, but today I was 2 hours on highway which was partially very bumpy.. my normal camera ois is making noises now and looks like waves while trying to focus🎉 god, I hate it
Thanks for the info. I’m definitely keeping my new iPhone well away from my bike
I've had the camera on my iPhone 7 go out, it stops focusing but no problems since for about 2 years, by the way, if Apple work on your phone consider it not water-resistant, they DO NOT stand by their work.
Interesting. Thank you. It’s amazing the difference in experience motorcyclists and iPhone owners have. I’ve had my iPhone 7 mounted to my bike for 5 years and had it out in the pouring rain after having the screen replaced with no problems on both accounts. But I’ll will definitely take all this into account! Especially when upgrading. Ride safe and thanks again 👍
The relative resistance to water intrusion depends of the version of the phone. Later versions of iPhone are better designed to handle exposure to water. Also, Apple's coverage and warranty policy regarding water exposure has changed over the years. So I think it's disingenuous to make a blanket statement that they do not stand by their work. I worked for Apple for 18 years, and saw 10's of thousands of customers over that period, so I have a bit of knowledge in this area.
Is it a issue for android to?
I believe not
I never had such a problem with my Android phones mounted on my bikes. I've made thousands and thousands of kms with this setup, even passing through bumpy roads. On the other hand I never had an iphone and probably never will. Oh, I have never used a dedicated GPS device, always and only my Android phone. Other problems? Sure: bad visibility on sunny days, waterproofness, overheating, low battery, not enough ram, etc. I always found some kind of solution for those.
Interesting thank you very much. Lots to consider. Overall the Android has served you well. And from what I’ve seen… way less complains with these phones. Thanks again, ride safe 👍
Nobody really cares for cheap androids anyway, you can’t simply buy another one. $50 vs $1000
Just took my first ride for the year with my iPhone 11 in a RAM phone mount. Ruined my camera
Oh no sorry
This is not true. I do deliveries full time every day and use a $17 cheap aluminum motorcycle phone mount for my iPhone XS and I’ve been doing this for 2 years now. After watching this video took random pictures walking at the same time and the pictures where perfectly fine. No blur or anything.
Thanks for the feedback. I have honestly refrained from mounting my much newer iPhone to my handle bars because of this warning from Apple. But it’s seems I could be over worrying
My screen got damaged because of it
Hello Fabian. I have an Android phone and an Iphone that I also have mounted in a standard holder on the handlebars and I use them for navigating when I go to an unfamiliar area. And otherwise I have the phone in my inner pocket while driving and has a connection with my earphones via bluetooth. On the handlebars I have a GoPro Hero 3+. Here I make film recordings and photos of my tours. I also placed a camera on the side of my helmet. So no, I don't recognize myself in Apple's story.
Interesting, thanks for the info. From feedback I’m getting, I’m starting to realise it only seems to be a problem with the very latest few iPhones. So my iPhone 7 is safe. Which one do you have?
@@FabMotorbikes I have an iPhone XR that shows no problems when I use it and connect it to the handlebar.
Thank you 👍
Of course Quadlock make a dampener for this which I fitted. No problems thus far touch wood.
Nice one thanks. When I upgrade my phone a quad locker dampener sounds like a key addition. So far no problem with my old iPhone 7.
As far as I know the problem is with iPhones, not other smartphones. So you should change video title to iPhones Smartphones:)
Seems to be the case. Thank you
My FTR 1200 broke my iPhone 12 😢
😢 I just got an iPhone 14…. It’s going nowhere near my bike
Have had a Samsung S10 mounted on my bikes for years, without any problem. Had it on a HD which vibrates as h#"l, a Africa Twin aswell, and both the phone and camera is as it should. This must be an iPhone-problem only...
Interesting, thanks for the info. I may consider switching over 👍
This is very worrying
Yep
I have destroyed 2x Pixel 3 smartphones, klr650, ram mount.
Interesting thanks. Even with the ram mount , which are supposed to be pretty good
It's killing my phone now
What phone do you have?
@@FabMotorbikes Samsung A13 very bad
Interesting that this is happening to Samsungs too now. Not good at all!
And there is a very good reason to buy an Android phone instead of an iphone
Yep. I agree
