  • In this video Fabien talks about how the vibrations from the motorcycle handle bars in your phone can damage the camera in your phone. This is mainly thanks to a statement released by Apple that vibrations on motorcycle cycles can upset the Optimal Image stabiliser in the camera of the iphone.

    It’s most prevalent on later iPhones when they introduced a more sensitive image stabilisation. Think it’s around 10.
    I had an IPhone XR which had its image stabilisation go squif.
    That’s right around the same time everyone had the issue.
    I’ve now got Quadlocks damper which turns all the tiny vibes into big floppy ones lol with my new iPhone. So to recap your current phone should be fine as you are. If you go for iPhone 10 or newer get the Quadlock with damper unit.

      You simply guessed, because OIS (optical image stabilization) was introduced on the iPhone 7.

      @@what7541 and did it remain the same version of equipment or did improve/change/upgrade/alter through the following generations of the phone?
      So is it possible that say the iPhone 10’s for example was different to the 7?
      And if that is the case does my comment hold water again?

    • @what7541
      @what7541 Před rokem

      It's possible. You're just saying it as if you know for sure, even giving a recap to your comment for the OP of the channel.
      And whether the newer iPhones have more sensitive image stabilization or not (I don't know where you got that information), it probably doesn't make that much of a difference when riding a motorcycle for thousands of km. It's OIS one way or another.

    Found this video because my camera died today thanks to my DRZ-400 had my Rockform mount on the bike for maybe 2 weeks. Wide lenses will focus, zoom lenses will focus but the normal camera looks like I’m taking pictures through a mirage. The phone also makes a weird sound while the camera is in use.

  • @marcelvanooststroom1733

    Yup, found out the hard way. Made a ride for 50km on my XJ900s with my iPhone 11 mounted on the handlebar. Never knew it would destroy my back camera. Phones are robust build but they fail on vibrations. Thought I did the right thing to buy a solid aluminum phone holder. Now I know better.

    I’ve seen this mentioned previously online also, so it’s one of the reasons I don’t have a handlebar mount on my FZ6 for my phone. Instead I use an Oxford Q4R tank bag which has a phone pocket on the top of it (and I use an iPhone too).

    • @FabMotorbikes
      @FabMotorbikes  Před 2 lety

      Nice one. That sounds like a sensible compromise. My iPhone 7 has been fine for a while but I think it’s because the camera isn’t very sophisticated. When I upgrade, having it on the tank bag could be the way forward. 👍

  • @gushingstream7714

    My iPhone 6s Plus failed in August this year. The camera lens would start to vibrate when the camera was turned on. It would take blurry images. I did change to a stiffer cellphone mount in June. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the failure. I have been mounting phones on my bike for eight years, and this was the first time I had a problem.

      It would depend on the phone - if they have optical image stabilization it means the actual camera lens is "floating" and the systems that move the lens are fairly delicate.
      If it only has digital image stabilization you're likely fine.

      The relative resistance to water intrusion depends of the version of the phone. Later versions of iPhone are better designed to handle exposure to water. Also, Apple's coverage and warranty policy regarding water exposure has changed over the years. So I think it's disingenuous to make a blanket statement that they do not stand by their work. I worked for Apple for 18 years, and saw 10's of thousands of customers over that period, so I have a bit of knowledge in this area.
