Giant sinkholes also known as tiankeng, or “heavenly pits”, were discovered in southern China on June 20, 2022. The karst sinkholes, along with the sinkhole cluster, were formed by a subterranean stream. Part of the discoveries included rare plants and fossils of ancient marine animals.

These kinds of giant sinkholes are frequently mentioned in old Chinese novels, mostly with hidden or lost kungfu scripts where the main character will stumble upon after the villain thought they had fallen to their death. 😂😂 Guess, this kind of places is where those writers found the inspiration.

As an expert on the karst science (I am editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies) I am always fascinated with any karst discoveries but become saddened when science sound bites associated with such television reports are given because they are rarely correct. In this instance the the science was basically correct but so oversimplified and somewhat misstated that I started to tear my hair out.

In order to elaborate I would need a much larger space to write it out. It is subject that has been studied for hundreds of years. The subject requires a careful assessment of the rock petrology, geochemistry of the water and bedrock, and structure of the rock formation. As I said in my previous comment, the audio was basically correct but such a massive size and formation of the sinkhole within the bedrock (as opposed to forming in the overlying sediments) is not as common, although not rare either, requires considerable discussion.
