I'm Italian and I can state she speaks Italian better than a lot of friends of mine.

the way she speaks italian is blowing my mind, not only about grammar and accent, but the level of fluency and comprehension in general. She is really smart. 💪🏽💖
She does sound like she truly already has that language, which slips the listener's idea that it's not her mother tounge.
In fact, all north Indian languages including Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi belong to the family of language called Indo-European Family. Origin/root being the same, it is relatively easy for most north Indians to learn European languages. When I saw the Italian movie Bicycle Thieves, I found in it expressions which are there in my dialect.

"Italian has given me another life"- This is exactly what I was telling my book club recently! She immersed herself in Italy & it's culture, language, etc. so that she could have a NEW life (& also challenge herself). After all, as one of my friends commented, Lahiri has already achieved the Pulitzer for her work (in English).

Se' Bignè il fascino del rumeno è questo: una lingua tenacemente latina in mezzo ad un mare di lingue slave o perfino non indoeuropee (ungherese) ma che per ovvi motivi è stata da queste influenzate nel corso della storia. È stata una delle prime lingue straniere che ho studiato dopo inglese, francese, tedesco e spagnolo proprio per il suo essere semplice (almeno per un italiano) ma affascinante allo stesso tempo.

The way she speaks Italian makes me feel embarrassed of my English, even though I worked over 8 years in the UK and have also studied in their universities. Her accent is almost neutral and outstanding, for sure she shows better skills than a lot of us native Italian speakers.
qualsiasi straniero può quasi facilmente arrivare a parlare italiano come un italiano, mentre nessuno può parlare fluentemente inglese come un inglese e soprattutto americano come un americano se non dopo una vita che si è trasferito (e ancora non ci si arriva bene). Se io dico "albero" tu straniero non puoi non capire che ho pronunciato "albero", potrai non sapere cosa significa ma hai capito cosa ho detto. Questo non vale in inglese, dove è tutto un suono breve e attaccato che può essere interpretato in mille modi. L'inglese è facile da leggere, facile da scrivere, facile anche da pronunciare (rispetto all'arabo o lingue orientali), ma parlarlo sul posto e capire cosa dicono gli altri o anche solo capire qualcosa in un qualsiasi reality su MTV senza sottotitoli è un'impresa titanica.
@@mmuccini Non aiuta neanche il fatto che non essendoci un corrispettivo della nostra accademia della crusca lo parlino un po' tutti a seconda di come gli pare. In effetti sono convinto del fatto che l'amore degli inglesi per gli scambi epistolari derivino dall'oggettivo impedimento di intendersi fra loro se provenienti da una diversa regione.

@ferzy09 You are absolutely right. I can easily pick up Spanish or Italian words, pronounce them right, but seen several Only English speaking friends struggle with it.

nni9310 that’s a silly question. Someone doesn’t believe they attracted to something, they just are. People are drawn to different things, people and languages that they like and connect with.

As an Indian, I have always known her as English writer, and this came as a pleasant surprise to me. Over the last couple of weeks I have been watching lot of Italian quisine videos on CZcams, and this is what I get in my recommendation!!!

I just would like to remind you (and all here): be aware that on the web, and worldwide, there is a lot of "Italian sounding" cooking recipes, restaurants and books, which in fact have little or nothing to do with true Italian cuisine. As for the good websites, I can recommend "Il Cucchiaio d' Argento", but "La cucina italiana" and "Artusi" are the milestones of traditional Italian cuisine. Of course, I guess the same could be said for great traditional cuisines that spread worldwide, like Indian(s), Chinese, Thai, etc: Indian restaurants in Italy or the UK probably serve dishes which differ from the ones served in India, I guess ...

I met Jhumpa Lahiri on one of her lectures in the U.S. Not only is she beautiful but gracious and classy. I am Italian born and she speaks better than I do.

I am an Italian and her spoken Italian is better than many millennials. She speaks with poise and sophistication, while the younger generation speaks with fillers and adjectives.
not only millennials, Pen Muni ;) the previous generations would speak an italianized version of dialect. Let's face it, Italian doesn't exist but in books or in the dubbing studio.

It's so flattering when someone so foreign and so intelligent falls in love with your culture and language... The same thing has happened to us Greeks with Victoria Hislop, a Brit who now lives in Crete and has become a Greek citizen!!! And we're really proud of this. But I can totally understand how one can love Italy. The country museum, the country post card, beauty and finesse incarnated, men and women simply out of a beauty contest, and the Italian language is impossible to speak without singing. It has amazing rythm and melody, and it could be a remedy for depression!!! It's no wonder western music started from Italy. Lots of love and kisses from Grecia!!!😉☺️🤗❤️🇬🇷🇮🇹
Yes but the feeling of being alive, welcomed and connected is very much what happens to me when I visit Greece, Athens and the exquisite Greek Islands. I disagree about the beauty of the Italian people, the Greek men and women are much better looking than Italians, honestly, and I am Italian.
What is the most beautiful place in Europe? For me it is the Greek islands with their amazing natural beauty and the lovely villages with painted doors and whitewash walls, donkeys, fishing boats, rustic people, crystal waters, etc. my god it is like heaven!

Insegno da tanti tanti anni l'italiano in Francia. Sono felice quando riesco a far appassionare l'altro alla mia lingua.
Quasi sempre l'inizio dello studio dell'italiano è dettato da motivi banali: è una lingua facile, è una lingua che mi permetterebbe di entrare ai Liceo internazionale, è una lingua che era dei miei nonni, ecc.
Ma quando questo desiderio di imparare l'italiano si trasforma in passione, anche all'insaputa dell'altro, allora ne sono davvero felice.
Imparare una lingua è davvero conoscere un mondo...
Non credo proprio sia così semplice, abbiamo una delle grammatiche più complesse in assoluto

I feel the same way about the German language. It's deeply satisfying and it resonates within me - almost like 'coming home' and will not rest until I learn it as well as English. I find anyone's story and experience in learning a new language to be interesting. Good video!

Un linguaggio molto duro : better: "una lingua molto difficile", perchè (because) duro in italiano è il contrario di morbido (the opposite of soft).

Marvelous interview. She expresses so well the desire to embrace another culture and language while acknowledging that she will never be a native. Though I understand the reasons for her reluctance to translate her own Italian writing into English, I hope that she will do so in the future, as her current translator, Ann Goldstein, does not do her justice.
I would never be able to tell she's not a native speaker. I didn't think it was possible to reach this level of mastery for someone who's not born into it.

Anch'io sono inammorato nella lingua Italiana. Comminciai a imparare I'italiano quando ero solo quindicenne, solo per divertimento. Italiano é una buona porta per imparare anche le altre lingue romanze ed il latino. Adesso abito nel Caribe in un luogo dove si parla Spagnolo, e parlo Spagnolo ogni giorno. Non era necessario studiare molto per imparare anche il Spagnolo. La mia lingua nativa é il scandinavo.
Also I am in love with the Italian language. I began to study Italian when I was 15 years old, just for fun. Italian is also a good gate into the other romance languages. Now I lve in an area in the Caribian Islands and I speak Spanish every day. My knoledge of Italian made it possible for me to learn Spanish without much study. My native language is Scandinavian.

Grazie. Ho corretto il sbaglio. Prima imparai tutta la grammatica senza apprendere un gran vocabolario. Poi leggevo molto letteratura italiana con aiuto di un dizionario, multo lento nell'inizio, ma con il passo del tempo piu rapidamente. Leggendo letteratura imparavo anche le forme dei verbi irregolari in un modo naturale senza sforzarmi. Era un gran lavoro, peró anche molto divertente. Ora uso spesso materiale italiano e spagnolo caricato dalla rete, e delle video e dei tessi. Per me era utilissimo sapere molto grammatica il piú presto possibile, qualcosa che posibilmente valga per imparare qualisasi lingua.
Knut Holt di niente :) hai usato poi il verbo "cargato" che è una formula molto spagnola, magari stai usando una tastiera il spagnolo e lo ha corretto in automatico, ma in italiano la forma corretta è "caricato".
Lo so che sembro pedante e noioso, però sto solo cercando di correggere il tuo vocabolario XD considerando che sto anche sorvolando su moltissimi altri errori.
Comunque buona fortuna per tutto e per essere autodidatta sai molto bene l'italiano!
Actualmente parlo cosí spesso spagnolo che sono incline a mescolare. So la parola caricare, ma quando si dice "cargar" molti momenti ogni giorno, é facile scambiarle. E si, ho una problema con la tastiera. Uso una tastiera spagnola con un computer scandinavo.

Italy has always been a very special place for me. I first fell in love with Italian food then the place itself. At some point I came across an Italian video on youtube and I somehow watched it, the moment I heard Italian, I fell in love with it and the next day I started learning Italian even without realizing that I'm doing it. It's by far the most beautiful language. And this lady right here speaks Italian in such an elegant manner like I've never heard before. Viva Italia ❤️

The correct way of saying it is "Viva l'Italia", it's a very common mistake. Anyway one of the virtues of italian as a language is that Italians are always tolerant about mistakes made by foreigners (a rare virtue). I can say with absolute certainty that we've always been fascinated by foreigners speaking our language, and even jokes about mispronunciations and mistakes are made with sympathy, understanding the challenges that learning brings.

I really enjoyed the interview. She speaks well. I can relate as I after many years am trying to really learn Italian well. There is a challenge of learning any language as an adult. And hearing her story and about the effort she put into it is inspiring.

Io sono Asif Mohammed e sono un Indiano sto studiando all'università degli Genova. Attualmente, vivo a Savona. Bene, sono arrivato in Italia il 5 ottobre 2019 e ho affrontato molte difficoltà qua perché non conoscevo la lingua che gli Italiani parlando, poi ho deciso di imparare l'italiano a primo possibile e ho imparato questa lingua solo in due mesi. Questa donna, anche se dice che le manchi la dimestichezza e al di là dell'accento imperfetto, si esprime in un ottimo raffinato italiano, nonostante non sia madrelingua e soprattutto lo abbia imparato da adulta. Ciò mi fa ritenere che sia indice di elevata intelligenza della persona, parallelamente alle cose intelligenti che dice. Non ho dubbi che anche Steve Jobs lo sia. Ciao

She is a Bengali by blood... Bengalis are naturally inclined towards art and literature... In Kolkata till date we have large group of language enthusiasts who work on different languages around the world. Not sure, it happens in other cities in India. This woman is from London but her ancestral house was in South Kolkata...

Ho letto il suo libro “in altre parole” qualche anni fa, e per me era una inspirazione per fare passi avanti con imparare l’italiano. Per uno straniero, come io, la lingua era davvero scoraggiante. Però, con le sue parole, sentivo più accolto, mi rallegrava e mi dava più coraggio. Per leggere un racconto di un’altra persona che viveva una esperienza come la mia, mi faceva sentirmi capito, in un certo senso.
Sono davvero felice di avere inciampato in questo video.
Questa signora è di madre lingua bengalese. A Londra parlava inglese. Ha studiato francese, russo e latino. Poi ha scelto di scrivere in italiano. E che te devo dì? Sono senza parole.

@@michelealbanese3261 Siamo molto + vicini alla neutralità del fiorentino o del romano, senza contrazioni né difficoltà col suono GL né troppe vocali aperte o chiuse né altre caratteristiche locali.
La cosa + incredibile non è la pronuncia (la R mantiene un tocco angloamericano) ma l'intonazione, l'emissione, il timbro della voce che sembra italiana al 100%. Ecco, forse la spiccata musicalità, la modulazione, le parole scandite, l'apertura e l'altezza della voce si avvicinano meno alle lingue (ligure) e ai dialetti del Nord rispetto a quanto si avvicinino alle lingue (lingua siciliana, lingua siciliana nel dialetto salentino, lingua napoletana) ed ai dialetti del Centro-Sud, agli aspetti + melodiosi delle lingue e dei dialetti del Sud.
Ma basta con queste differenze nord - sud !!

This is an incredible interview. I briefly heard of Jhumpra Lahiri while researching exophonic writers. I cannot speak Italian, but I get the impression that she has a strong command of the language. I love her modesty when she admits that she makes a lot of errors and constantly needs a dictionary. I feel the same way in French, which is my all-time favourite language. I also love Russian, though I cannot say more than a few sentences in it. This has inspired me to keep writing in foreign languages!

@@userJam Hi-- I am able to watch Russian videos with English subtitles, but I am far from full comprehension. I have learned a lot of basic vocabulary and some verb conjugations as well. I have the settings of my email and many websites in Russian, where I have picked up new words. But I need serious study of grammar to get to the next level, and I've been bogged down with many other things. Still, a lot of progress in three years.

Beside an Italian language lover, Jhumpa is a very cultivated woman and her soul is deep: from an Italian language speaker point, she has a perfect accent, sometimes I could notice just a little bit of English accent, but she honestly has the best Italian accent, fluency and vocabulary I ever heard from a foreigner.

She is absolute class, so impressive ..... i'm from Manchester, UK, and i've only just started to try to learn Italian, but right now i'm finding the language so tough to get into, and just as tough to master 'rolling my rrrr's' .... i'll keep trying though, even if it takes me forever, and maybe one day i'll hopefully get to the stage of being HALF as good at it as she clearly is!

I'm italian but what i found very interesting is what she says about languages, in a general sense: language is the most important thing because it has a universe inside and deeply relates to the culture it comes from.

I speak a few languages fluently but none of the other languages including my mother tongue I studied at school, although I can read them. I only read in English and it became the language of my thought.

I read the book “The Interpreter of Maladies.” Story after story it makes one fall in love with India or curious about it with the whole aspects of itself and also the food. She writes these short stories nonchalantly but then it leads you to stop and think about it, not too heavily but in a contemporary way. When you are absorbed into the book, you don’t feel the boundaries, although most of the stories set in India. It was a story of us, people, spiced with Indian identities. I think this is an extraordinary way to pay homage to one’s country and its people.
Being a Bengali like Jhumpa Lahiri, this video motivates me so much to learn this beautiful language. I dream to speak Italian like her someday.
