In this video we are showing you how to remove and replace the transfer case motor or also know as the low range motor on Mercedes W163. It is not a very complicated procedure. It has only 4 bolts and the wiring.
Even if you do not use the LOW RANGE you SHOULD probably fix it because if you do not it might get stuck between low and high range and in this case the transfer case will not work and you will NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE!
    So save Yourself some Trouble.
    This procedure should work on:
    1998 Mercedes W163 Low Range Transfer Case Motor Replacement ML230 ML270 ML320 ML350 ML400 ML430 ML500

Good job , and very informative ! I have this problem with my 2002 ml270 although car operates fine, the low range indicator light flashes for about 5 seconds after startup, have been told motor failed to complete cycle last time low range was engaged so should probably fit new one .

I have ml320 w163 1998 model..... The front two tires got stuck suddenly and would not move.... The mechanic suggested to remove the front two axles and make it rear wheel drive and I said OK.... But still the car does not move..... Now after watching your video I am thinking maybe the motor got stuck.... Whats your opinion?

Hi, We have a problem on our ML W163. Previous owner installed new radio unit (not MB) and ruined Low Range Switch relay. Looks like broke the unit and then glued the switch to try and make it look "normal" but doesn't work. Unfortunately, we didn't think to test as we really don't need low range. But, if easy we would like to get it working again. Can you please do a vid on how to remove and replace the switch/relay? Thanks

Thanks so much for your videos! The Low Range light came on and stayed on when I was driving so that my ML-320 was running 3000+ rpm at 40 kph. I checked my ATF fluid and it was low. I then added as per your instructions and voila! Transmission is working properly (fingers crossed).

I have an issue with a 2002/52 Ml270 cdi auto when i start the vehicle the low range flashes 6-7 times then goes off and even after the light goes off if I try pressing the low range button nothing happens. When I drive the vehicle for a few days its fine then suddenly whilst driving the car will just go out of gear and over-rev and slow down so I use the tip-ironic and hit the gear back down to 3/4 and it sorts itself out agin for a few days then the same thing happens again. Would you say that this is a faulty transfer Case - your help would be most appreciated

      T the barber
Same issue as mentioned some months ago, I did a reset by hitting it with a rubber hammer, this process reset the motor for a while but after a few days it reverts back to the malfunction mode of flashing light
So I bought a second hand low range part on eBay and replaced the faulty part and since then no more flashing lights, all working like it should
Once that low range motor is faulty, it appears it has to be replaced
      Hope this helps

mine is stuck in low range - was at a stop light and it dropped into low range - will this solve the problem. No I didn't put it in low range and it is not in limp mode as I have had limp mode before. Low Range light is on goes out when you stop truck and comes back on when you put it in gear and drive 2 meters

T the barber I found a short. The control module which is on the drivers side right above the gas pedal was hanging by a broken zip tie, go figure. anyway the module fell down and the wire wore and touched the steering column grounding it out and putting it in low range. so if there is a short in the wire anywhere and it goes to ground it will put the transfer case in low even if your doing 25 MPH
