This is THE song that got me hooked on VW. I live in a small town, so songs like these are not played on our hokey local stations. I got a car with Sirius SM and heard this then fell in love. Unfortunately after doing research, I also found out that the band had broken up. I vowed that if they ever got back together that I would go anywhere to see them in concert. Years later, got to see them in Nashville. LOVE THIS BAND!!
Looking back, i'm happy this album was produced in my middle teen years... the amount of fun i had to Vampire weekend on vinyl with my friends was awesome! 4 story house, 15 bedrooms, 4 kitchens, 6 dogs, a shit load of weed and an attic which lead to a 20 foot but 20 foot open roof! was amazing
I'm just sixteen so I'm still fairly young but I remember when I was 10/11 I used to stay up late watching tv during vacations and once heard this song on mtv and really liked it. But I kinda forgot about until this year when I started listening to this band and it made me so happy when this song came up on the album :)
Their sound is taken from Congolese soukous music. Paul Simon isn't the originator. I don't blame you for not knowing. They don't do the greatest job of giving credit.
Ironically, Peter Gabriel was able to take these African influences & make them sound good, by essentialiy fusing in further creative material, whereas this does sound a lot more like Paul Simon / Graceland: contented to take one idea and beat it to death.
In my opinion this is one of the most underrated songs to ever be recorded. Sad to say I don't think Vampire Weekend will ever make one as good as this again

I saw them at Osheaga music festival and it was beyond amazing. They closed with Walcott which fit perfectly. I cried. But a beautiful cry.
