Lumped port uses a uniform parallel field on patch as source to excite structure. In wave port, TEM mode of cross-section of the structure is calculated first, then the TEM mode is used to excite the structure.

Could you please do a simply example of a stripline excited by internal wave ports? There seems to be nothing that speaks to this within the HFSS documentation or across the internet.

waveport does not only look for TEM mode, the cross sectional mode can be anything. it does not even have to be one single mode
