The ice and salt mixture lowers the melting temperature of the ice and gets it really cold. Rock salt is used to melt ice on roads since mixing the two lowers the freezing temperature of water. It's a fun science experiment for kids. Just watch out for frostbite. It is a cool experiment that shows mixing things can lower their freezing temperature and boiling temperature.
