McLaren 750S: 6 BIG Improvements Over The 720S | Top Gear

- Yes, it’s another new McLaren supercar that looks… exactly like the old McLaren supercar. But the idea with the new 750S isn’t to blow the poor old 720S into the middle of last week. No, the game plan here is to take what was already one of the very finest supercars on sale and fine-tune its foibles. So there’s a little more power from the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 here. And a little more bandwidth in the suspension there. More downforce. Less weight. But none of that matters. What’s crucial is that McLaren ups the fit and finish, irons out the foibles, and turns its brilliantly useable supercar into something you’d really fancy daily driving - even though it’s got more power than a P1 (minus the electric).
A tricky mixture to concoct. Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew has driven the 750S coupe on track and the Spider on the road to see if the British Ferrari rival has pulled it off.

I've always loved the looks, sound & terrifying speed of the Mclaren cars but there's very little discernible difference between the now 750S & existing 765LT. The performance numbers between these two are almost identical while the 765LT is 30 plus thousand more. I would take either one in a heartbeat, but I think they're too similar. Just my opinion.
Disagree.
a 765LT is more focused, more raw.
A 765LT will be better for trackdays, or a Sunday blast or an Alpine pass
but not great for daily use and lacking some comfort or long road trips.
However
The 750S is useable day to day
Takes everything that the 720S did well but removes its flaws.
You could do anything in this and be happy (or so they say) even the aforementioned trackdays/blasts/Alpine passes but it won't be quite as good on those as 765, but will still be great.
@@th3b0untyhunter I actually agree with much of what you said, and a good comparison would be the 911 GT3 & GT3RS. When you look at these two Porsches, there are noticeable differences between both iterations, even for those who aren't the biggest gearheads. Looking at the 750S & the 765LT, it's hard to distinguish them if you don't have the well-trained eye. It's why I really love the Senna. it's as raw a track car as they come, and looks like nothing else McLaren makes. I appreciate your response and point of view.
@VK6AB- is anyone saying otherwise ?
But the fact is that little changes can make a big difference - and pretty much every person who has driven the 750S says its much improved.
Odd though that no one whinges when Porsche bring out a .2 version of a GT3 or GT3 RS
This isn't a new version of a gt3 but a new car that looks just like the other 2.
@alexcepile1420 and so is a .2 version of a gt3
991.1 GT3 and 991.2 GT3 look virtually the same.
Just a few changes, mostly under the skin but it drives better.
Same situation here
Estoril is a great circuit, I just wish they upgraded it to a standard that major championships can race at. It dropped off the MotoGP calendar way back in 2012 due to lack of investment in track facilities, basically falling into disrepair. Once Portimao's Algarve circuit was completed, that was the end for Estoril.
I'm happy that the 750 is just a facelift and not a whole new car. The design still looks futuristic after 6 years and it's still one of the most usable and compelling packages on the market
100% 👍 this will also make the vehicle hold its value for longer.
I did not know top gear was part of the mclaren sales team… its getting hard getting a true and honest review these days
Just watch my video on the 750 instead 👀
You’ve obviously never driven a McLaren.
The way they've managed to restyle it whilst still keeping it exactly the same is amazing
There is only one thing they need to improve, and that is reliability
That and crippling depreciation, although not sure how they would quickly do that..
Build quality aswell they fall apart after 6 months
People who never own a McLean love to make that false assertion
@@nkululekomndaweni they’re great cars, but McLaren does the bare minimum.
I have a 720S. I actually really like the folding display. The rear of 750 is nicer than 720. It does lose a LOT of value but you get a lot for your money. I am getting a EVO, which is much less in may ways but still the same price.
That's a bloody brilliant review, that. 👍
McLaren have obviously been watching Tavarish and decided to beat him to the 'what if the P1 didn't have a hybrid system'
Did they improve the effects of gravity on the depreciation?
More Super Car manufacturers need to do this. Take their pinnacle and tweak it to perfection.
I have driven a 720S on a paid car tour. And it was the most insane mental car I've ever driven. I drove the Ferrari f8 after the 720S and the Ferrari felt like I was driving smth normal. But that McLaren, it feels like it's out of this world. Especially the power, chassis, looks and the handling it was next level. Granted it wasnt put together with the most care but still a surreal experience
I used to be a Mclaren hater. Then I got to ride in a 900ish HP 720s. Haven't stopped thinking about it sense. Amazing car.
How long are Brits going to continue calling antennas "aerials", considering no one has made one stick up into the air for at least ten years?
We never will 😂
I take it the next higher spec will ne the 800LT?
I guarantee you McLaren would use the same exact sized rods and the engine would blow up left and right. McLaren is lazy, even though I love their cars, the effort they put into the engineering/design of new models is pathetic.
No I’m guessing this is the final fully combustion super series car so it will be replaced with a brand new hybrid
@@annonymously331 Sounds about right. I agree.
Pity that owners will spend most of their time in the seat driving back and forth to the dealer to fix it.
Driving? Getting towed more like.
10k miles on a 720s in almost 5 years now 0 issues. Same with the elva.
Where's Chris Harris? He is the only who knows this machine well enough to tell the difference.
@Taverish it looks like @McLaren is doing exactly what you are doing with the P1.
Freddie,
I want your P1 to smoke the 750S. 🙏🏼👊🏼
I'm sure he will now he has a benchmark to compete with
Bro the 720s is faster than P1 750S 765LT
AutotopnL tested it on Autobahn look at numbers 1/4 mile 1/2 mile 1 mile 0-100 0-200 0-300 kph top speed everything the 720s is faster than McLaren P1 those numbers verified by VBOX and DRAGY
765LT and 720s were similar from 0-250 km/h
After 250 km/h 720s was pulling away in side by side GPS acceleration comparison
1:35 Most people say the P1 without the electric bits would be the 675LT, and that’s the closest thing to one. It’s interesting that a 750S is compared to a P1. Must be that good.
@@MrIke303
I thought McLaren don’t even make their own engines?
Facts ❤❤
@@MrIke303they’re made by Ricardo based on a design licensed from Nissan.
@mquin359 pretty sure it was the rods in his 675LT that shit the bed
@@MrIke303I guess you never owned or driven one, because if u had u won’t make stupid comments like that 👍
Ferrari is out here playing chess while Lambo and McLaren are still playing checkers.
Thanks for some quality drone and external shots. That 750S is pretty lean and mean!
What’s the actual aim with this car given the existence of the 765lt? Is this better?
This is the base car, the replacement for 720S
More driver focused than 720S but less raw and unrefined than 765LT
Day to day, or for road trips yes it will be better than 765LT
On a track day or an Alpine pass the 765LT will be better.
only made 765 of the lt , it was a limited edition , this is readily avaliable . Also has a next gen interior vs 765
That's a nice track to test it! Estoril in Portugal! 🇵🇹
I wish it was more of a radical redesign but it’s pretty neat. Love the 720s and it’s more extreme variants
McLarens are cars that one could stare at for hours and never get bored, but would hesitate to actually own one, even if they had the money.
This Guy is great :D and he absolutely makes a good Job on the Review
Tavarish is about to answer the un-hybridized P1 question. Should be pretty light.
That's so fire 🔥
Amazing, McLaren 750s 👍👍👍
Love it already 😁
I love it ❤❤very much 😍 750s
This guy's funny - he needs to be in more videos!
I have several McLarens.... all are very reliable so far.... i believe the export cars are well built compared with those sold in local uk market 😂
Blud i have 10 mclarens and i hate them
still beautiful
does it come with upgraded rods and pistons cuz the old ones were too weak
Love it that top gear is making in depth car reports again. Thanks Top Gear! Been a fan since the Tiff days
So basi ally what you are saying is @Tavarish is right all along and removing the hybrid system and having a more powerful IC engine is the way to go to make the best P1
And he got so much grief for going that way. Freddie is a top man and I suspect he will create something more spectacular than this 750S
Very cool 😎
Adhesive aeroplane wires would shed a lot of weight off the vehicle as well. In fact, aeronautical materials would help reduce weight significantly.
You didn't mention shorter gears it one the most exciting things in this upgrade
People who say that 911s are all the same will be the same people who will say that the 750s is the same as the 720s.
Porsches evolve, and most today are iterations of one model (992). McLarens are actually branded as different vehicles, yet look nearly identical.
Will it breakdown, blowup, go on fire like all other Mclarens, highly likely? Yet to do a track day, car meet or organised drive without seeing a Mac get recovered
The t50 review is out but when is the video coming out
How can the manage to grip which such a tiny 245 section front tyre😮😮
This is exactly what Porsche have been doing with the 911 for years. Small incremental changes.
Why isn't Mclaren calling this a mid-cycle refresh of the 720S?😕😕😕
Do they still catch fire?
Great car...
What a beauty😍
Glad to see the wheels not come off during the show.
When something is so perfect why do you need to change so much, these are at last getting the recognition they deserve.
Nice time to launch car, McLaren is doing so well in f1 now
Im expecting huge drop in 720S price so finally I will buy one.
Try the Regera from Koeningsseg, 1500 HP, 500 petrol, 1000 electric, cluch less tranmision, and so on.
Not its 1100 petrol. 707 electric
@@davidkato1150 ty, and Sorry for error.
I love the way he talk about this car 😂
Let's see if Tavarish can top this with his P1 salvage rebuild. Im sure he will
So basically 750s is a more affordable and a less exclusive 765lt !!..
270 mph! Wow!
It's more likely kmh. This was in Portugal.
Freddy's P1 will be awesome!
The silver is beautiful
They just love rebranding the same car. This is partly the reason they depreciate so heavily, a losing formula similar to jaguar.
Let’s guess the name on LT version. My guess is 789LT😂😂
To compare the all mighty new 750 with a 10! Year old p1 is pretty fun. The p1 who even did the new thing all new hypercars do now, Electric.. come on, no one choose a 750 over a p1.
Beautiful car. McLaren do make some absolutely wonderful driving machines it has to be said.
They really do.
The only place where I think they lag behind a lot of their competition are the interiors.
Take something like an F8 Tributo for example.
The interior is just a wonderfully sculpted, refined and elegant place to be, with the finest materials all mated together with the eye of an artist.
Even Mercedes are miles ahead in their higher end cars.
McLaren's interiors are still a little too humdrum for my liking yet, and it's something they need to work on.
After all, realistically, the percentage of people who will buy a 750S purely for track days is extremely small.
Yes, it's about the driving experience. But it's also about the living experience too.
It needs to be a place people are happy to be in and happy to be seen in.
F8 is a shit car, you don't have to believe just test drive both or at least get in the co-pilot seat & yall get it.
@@billionaire1159 the drive is irrelevant as I was talking about interior quality.
McLaren need to step up on theirs.
Just saw Jethro's review on evo, no comparison.
In the states we call it a mid-cycle update.
Probably the best supercar on sale. The hybrid cars are way too heavy
I wish it was a hybrid...even if it had the exact electric motor and batteries from the Artura
Wasn't the 720S' rear wing already carbon fiber?
1:27 tavarish is working on that
Ollie beeing cheeky and at the start of the video obviously not realising or maybe can't refer too, that Tavarishs P1 Evo is what this is. He is making a way better road car, than this pricey 750S imo. I think it is a pricey markup for a facelifted car......Mclaren plz update that 15yr old steering wheel plz 😢 my question is when is this car coming to GT7....😅👍
10:39 plugged in car play? you mean there is no wireless?
Please come on... don't expect too much
So so difficult to improve on its stupendously delicious predecessor; but I'll take this 😉😉
What angle is bad on ehat is onebof the greatest looking cars ever... up there with the E-Type
Cool for car boys
They said the build quality was something they really focused on with the Artura and look where that got them. It's the only thing holding them back
Still no easy button for the lift 😅
Opening joke wasn’t funny, heard it a billion times already
We need Chris Harris reviewing the 750s.
I know of a flat plane v8 that sounds good: GT350R
Ferrari?
What would it be life is a P1 wasn’t a hybrid? Literal Freddie Tavarish is showing us with his.
I will take 2 please 😊😊
Surprised the previous models never had forged wheels, thinner glass, and seats dripping in carbon.
sorry, which McLaren's drive the same??
Still got those horrifically gopping front light sockets.
Looks the exact same as every other boring McLaren with the smae Ricardo V8 with a slight tune
Where is Clxon, miss him
I'm sure the car is amazing...but I really struggle to get excited by McLaren's design language (inside and out). It looks a bit...underwhelming inside, and the exterior looks very generic...supercar? Again, probably a brilliant drive, but I can't see being won over by this car. I admit I couldn't tell you one McLaren from the next - they all more or less look the same to me.
That’s because they literally use the same damn parts on all of their cars. The P1 shared an ungodly amount of parts with their other cars. Laziest supercar manufacturer out there.
@@MrIke303 While you are not wrong, I can understand them. The development of different cars just costs sooooo much money. Every little piece is tested to exhaustion. And when you can spread the development costs over more cars, you can have a - ok that sounds absurd - reasonably priced super car... And well, they are if you compare price vs. performance to other manufacturers.
But tbh... I'd still probably settle for a new Porsche instead
Nice iPhone 15 or is just a 750s 😅?😊
Happy birthay and Aniversary 1ST.
do we have to have cbeebies
I'm mind blow that my AUD $711 Kenwood touch screen stereo has WIRELESS Apple Car play and Android Auto but McLaren can't do this for this several hundred thousand dollar car.
the names, numbers as names thing really does get confusing
Let's hope the build quality improves greatly. I've been in 3 McLarens and they've all had terribly built interiors
did they fix the connecting rods which like to fail and go through the engine block? always like the looks dont like the quality though..he never mentioned whether they did or not, that would be admitting that there are problems with the engines, which McLaren has never admitted even though hundreds of engines have failed
There's no issue on stock cars so there's no reason for them to change anything. And no 100s of engines have not failed.
This is a 720s with a bodykit... funny how Top gear's cynicism disappears when its a British brand. Unlike their Ferrari reviews.
I completely forgot this car was announced
Same here. I feel like maybe it’s because the 765LT is that good. It still seems so new and amazing to me.
It’s funny you write this actually. The other day I was thinking of McLaren. And I wondered what happened to the McLaren GT. I barely hear of it or see any videos of it. Just seems so forgotten. In the same way, I had forgotten they announced the 750S. It’s got huge shoes to fill.
8.79M subscribers and QC just missed the audio levels being way low?
Fine for me.
Everyone giving it to McLaren for the looks when the 911 hasn't changed for 30 years
Mclaren looks awesome but build quality is soo bad.
From all of the TG staff, they choose the worst one to test a brand new super car. Good thing Catchpole has done it on Hagerty as well, I didn’t even see it but I already know it’s on a whole new level.
Watch mine on the 750 😁👍
Why do all car reviewers put out the same old diatribe about McLaren's not being different enough from each other, yet other manufacturers appear to always get a pass eg Porsche, Lamborghini etc
