    Thanks as always for the file download. I did make a couple changes as I had 10" x 10" material to make Santa's envelope. The back piece required one piece, but I replaced the U-shaped spacer with multiple rectangles of suitable lengths. This allowed me to combine way the envelope layer and the emblem, using the rest of the sheet for the spacer pieces. I made extra so multiple spacers could be used for a little extra "depth" for more letters. Really nice project, thanks!

    I do want to echo a comment from below on considering materials as part of the laser selection process. I love my Ortur LM2 Pro2, but really miss being able to more easily work with clear acrylics and glass as I develop the hobby. You might also talk a bit about longer term maintenance and operating costs as part of the comparison.

    Along with size, speed, and cost another consideration to factor in is material. I love my diode laser, I don’t mind the wait too much (most of the time anyway) and I appreciate the bigger build size for the stuff I’m making and the cost was reachable for dipping my toes into the laser pool. However, I do wish for the ability to work with certain materials because of frequency like acrylics that I can’t touch with my 5W S9. So I think that ultimately along with the other factors desired materials is something to consider as well.

    For those of us who use our CNC machines with a laser attachment, we can use mm per hour to sound impressive. So on my Genmitsu 6050 I can run my engraves at a max speed of between 60 and 120 thousand mm per hour...LOL...Fortunately for me I don't have to make a living running my laser, it's strictly for my own fun and entertainment. Another great video. I am really enjoying my new Monport K40, but I have found that I really need to get air assist going on the K40, Engrave works fine but when I try to cut intricate small cutouts it just burns it up. So for the small stuff I still need to use my D1. I have ordered the parts for the air assist, hope it will not be too difficult to install and it solves the burning problem.

      No Ben, the file info is stripped when you bring the graphic onto the work bed. It's done on purpose so you don't ruin the original file and it stays safe. A work around is, type some descriptive text or a file name and put it on a tool path. Select all, click File --> Export and save it as an svg, dxf or ai, or import it to an Art Library. That way the file name will be with it when you import it in the future and the tool path doesn't output.

    You're generalising a little bit there. An apples to oranges comparison. If you had the same wattage lasers with similar beam compression and air assist on all three machines the speeds would have been more comparable. I do agree that the higher powered 40-130watt diode-based laser machines are far more expensive than the CO2 laser tube based machine of a similar wattage. Pros: CO2 laser is purpose built for this type of work. Cons: Smaller work area and the laser is water cooled which adds to maintenance.
    A great video that demonstrated why you should go for a higher powered machine and to opt for a CO2 based if you can. Personally, I wouldn't recommend anything less than 20watt, it's a pretty common size for diode lasers these days and usually around the same price as a 10watt.

      It was supposed to be an apples to oranges comparison! There are no 40-130W diode lasers. The current max optical output is 20W, +- 2. We're talking optical output, not wattage power draw from a brick. I'm not sure where you're finding a 20W diode laser for around the same price as a 10W. Just the 20W module alone is the same price as most complete 10W machines. The real purpose of this video was to show speed, which equals $$$ if you're doing this as a business. A Co2 can produce from 200-1000% more product than any diode on the market in the same amount of time depending on type and power.

    Does the monport40 have air assist?

    • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
      @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy  Před rokem +1

      No it doesn't Brandon. I don't know of any K40s that do. I am trying to get them to add it at the factory. It is extremely simple to add though.

      Thank you for your response. I am looking into buying a laser engraver. I do woodworking and leatherwork as a hobby and I think an engraver would be a great addition.

    Rich you are too hard on yourself. You know your market, people come here to see you make stuff, get ideas and learn. This is not a drone video where people are coming to see beautiful flights and slick video editing where moves are syncronized with the music. Guess what I am saying is don't worry about your video editing skills, we come for the content.
    I do find it amusing that you favor the k40 over the 50w. I have a K40 (lightburn capable), an Atomstack A5 M40 and a 60w 20X28. The vast majority of my work is on the 60w just because I can use larger sheets in it. The lanterns I make I can fit on 1 sheet of 12X20. when I was doing them using the k40 I was having to cut up smaller sheets on the table saw to barely fit each piece so that I could get them in the bed. Now it is habit even if I am running small jobs to use the 60w.

      For larger jobs I always go to the 80W Steve, but most jobs can be done on the 40, at least for me. Thanks for the assuring comments!

    Having in mind CO2 lasers, I could hardly justify buying 20w diode. But that's just me.
