I once walked downtown to go to the store when the snow was literally reaching up to my knees because my car was snowed so heavily down I couldn't get it out of the drivethrough.
I knew a person who said that the Alabama would shut down over a dusting that doesn’t even accumulate on roads. It took at least a foot and a half of snow to shut down northern Wisconsin schools.
It's always about how prepared the road crews are for getting the roads passable. Right when it starts snowing is when the roads get covered in ice and cars end up in the ditches. With prolonged snow it doesn't end up as a layer of ice.
I love how Mangs is talking about the importance of keeping your infantry at full HP while one of his infantry is being shot down to half. Excellent timing
Not sure if you're aware, but: Rivals unlocks when you finished ALL other missions and reach 97% campaign map completion. So that changed from the GBA, it doesn't matter if you pick Sami in the Eagle missions.

We know that it does exist and that it won’t softlock your elite campaign… but is it still the “break your kneecaps over and over again” levels of difficult?
Something they could have done, aesthetics wise was (during snow) have there be huge piles of it, and the animation would be the units halfway buried in snow or something. Feel like that could have been a visual representation of how it's more difficult for units to traverse it
Mangs, if it's true that the AI can't cheat anymore in FOW, Challenging Rivals should be easier this time around. Also, two differences that I noticed from the classic campaign: - You start with 2 less infantry units; - Olaf has 2 mechs instead of 2 infantry units.
Can confirm that Rivals is absurdly easy compared to the OG. Kanbei's Error is much easier as well. Cleared both in just two attempts and I am by no means a skilled AW player.
I'll be honest, I find the unit art especially to be actively painful to look at. The original games had such nice unit arts and this game has... I don't even know what to call it. (to be clear, the animations are really well done, it is just that the art itself that is animated looks really bad).

Advance wars 1 challenge campaign is hilarious cuz during certain missions there really is no other way to win other than "look at the map beforehand and abuse the ai quirks."
The Blue Moon big noses make it so that the soldiers resemble a crescent moon when they talk in cutscenes. True patriots, having the flag impressed on their faces. Also, animations are really cool and I'd rather you keep them. If people seem to not like them, speeding them up is a good compromise.
I knocked out during the AW2 Campaign Stream, but big congrats and props to Mangs for his perseverance and dedication to finishing the AW2 campaign in one stream with about 10 mins to spare!
On the one hand i'm excited because I love the Mangs Advance Wars lets plays. On the other hand i'm sad because I know advnace wars Alpha isn't finishing anytime soon D:
Nothing to do for figuring out Speed Rankings on each mission except to see what your score is after each day's completion. Given the 96 score for beating this on day 9, it's overwhelmingly likely that day 8 is the limit for 100 points in speed. I think I might go keeping a running list of Mangs's clear times and speed rankings. Hopefully it'll help out anyone gathering up this intel for wikis and whatnot. Plus the rare casual player who happens across it.
1:18 Just as a heads up, the conditions to unlock Rivals are different in Reboot Camp. You have to 100% the campaign to unlock it, so after you beat the final mission, you will then have the option to go back and refight the missions you didn't fight when offered the choice of your CO in missions earlier. So like the different versions of the Green Earth missions, or the two Max strikes/Folly mission.
97% actually. When you clear all the alternate missions, you'll reach 97% completion and unlock Rivals. Clear that, and you can unlock Nell for War Room and VS Mode for both AW1 and AW2.
And here we are, challenge campaign. We're all looking forward to Rivals but this time around it seems it won't be as you remember. At least the AI was tuned up ( and doesn't cheat in FoW)

Mangs, you have to consider that norvegians have the same snow immunity as Olaf, for italians that amount of snow is enough to cancel school, I am not kidding xD
11:11 i Actually think combining was a mistake, seeing as you can pull back the 5HP infantry, attack with the healthy infantry, and have the exact same result but keep the extra infantry, it doesnt matter really in this mission but, generally that wouldve been a better move
I have recently just beat the challenge campaign also to unlock Nell you need to 100% the advance wars 1 campaign on any difficulty I recommend classic or casual BC it's easier also it seems kanbei error on challenge campaign is easier you start of with a bomber which you never did in the the original game

In case no one told you Mangs, you need to finish the AW1 campaign, unlock all the alternate routes you didn't take, then beat every mission you didn't finish and then Rivals unlocks. You don't need to use Eagle in the final battle

Honstly from watching the stream it feels like they have co intelligence like famicom wars Cos like olaf feel just like aw1, but then hawke and such would make more intelligent maneuvers Might just be me but the ai seemed to get smarted when sonya, drake, and hawke came into play
Happy for you that the remake stayed true, or at least very close, to the original. I for one was very happy with Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2/Secret of Mana 2 (fan translation ROM only)), Baldurs Gate 1&2 in and so on. Question: I assume it is possible to 300/300 every mission, are you going after a perfect score, or will you leave it at "S rank is S rank"?
I just finished sea of hope with an s rank, which made me laugh because I only barely won on the last day by routing adder. I got 100 for everything but technique which got close😂
2 less infantry units in your starting lineup, and the 2 enemy infantry next to the artillery replaced with mechs. Can get rough if you're not careful. Can't go for the enemy tank or art 1st turn or your tank just gets clobbered.
Hey mangs, I think they designed the campaign in a way where getting the bonus missions is way less tedious, like after your stream I decided to buy it and went on the route where I chose Andy in max strike and normally to access the bonus mission I would need to have sunk olafs armada, which I didn’t and the game gave me olafs sea strike anyway I guess they just removed the requirements for this missions aside from rivals, so you’d probably get the Sonja missions regardless of how long it took, maybe it’s a bug I don’t know

hey man love the vids. since you asked for feedback: not a fan of the voice acting, and i think the enemy animations could be turned off (keep your own on though). keep up the good stuff!
Personally I'd prefer if you kept the animations on and kept voicing the characters. It's just nice, it adds a bit of life to the game! And I didn't watch your two giant streams to be honest so I kind of want to see it in the let's play instead.

I lived in the widwest, then moved to Tennessee. Half an inch of snow constitutes an actual emergency. These people...

They did a pretty good job with this remake. I’m so glad that its finally out after all the delays

Changes on this map: Olaf has Mechs instead of Infantry. Nell has two less Infantry than normal.
I have recently been playing AW2 GBA and having a blast. I am thinking I will buy this remake as I want Advance Wars to have more games in the future!

The big Blue Moon noses are because they are all based on the generic Blue Moon soldier seen in dialogue in the original AW2.
Snow doesn't slow things down on roads, which is why there isn't much of it on the road and city tiles, Mangs.

I got a line of dialogue from Hachi where he said some people ban him from Versus and Online matches because he's too unfair.
Back in the original version of these games, I would use the APC to decoy/bait enemies all the time too.

Technique is also calculated on a units lost in a single turn basis. A detail people keep glossing over.

At the very least, symmetrical fog of war will stop at least a few of those missions from being super painful.

I really grew on this remake, especially on Emulator, definitely replaces the original 2 for me, especially with the modding possibilities.
