    I think many people here don't like Santiago because it's a very big city (like 6 million people here) and living with a fast rythm, having to travel maybe 45 min-1 hour to your job in the rush hours can be very stressful. And also because of Chile is at the end of the continent many people have never travelled other countrys so they don't even know what's going on or how is everything outside so they cannot value the good things they have.
    If you talk with people that travel or with people who have a good situation in terms of job (or money in general) they always will appreciate Santiago because in the middle-good neighborhoods you can have a very good and enjoyable life ! 😁
    As a chilean I appreciate the good points you made in your review and I totally agree even with some of the negatives! And I also love Barrio Italia and Ñuñoa, its definitely a good place to stay if you visit the city or even if you stay to live ! 😁

      Thank you for such a detailed comment! - We're accustom to larger cities. We came straight from Bogota Colombia where we were for about 2 years straight. I think you're right, large cities can be a turn off for many and Santiago is a bit at the end of the World, so it's a city the seems to get unnoticed comparatively.

    Shoulda gone to Quebrada de Macul though, you can enter for free and you can actually go to cerro San Ramon from it (probably not in one day though), very beautiful, though in these months it tends to be a little more dry.

    As a chilean myself Im glad you enjoyed your visit to Santiago. I must say though that the city is not as safe today as it was before 2019 and like any other big capital you must be aware of your surroundings and avoid empty streets down town, specially at night. Using your phone while walking the streets is not a smart move either. If you're a tourist keep an eye on "motochorros" or bikers on sidewalks. They can steal your phone in a flash. Hope this helps anyone who's visiting in the near future.

      This is EXACTLY what we kept hearing from people... We came straight from Bogota Colombia, which is where we were for about 2 years... • @Laweaquesea0
    @Laweaquesea0 Před 11 dny

    I share much of what you said, but what happened after the social unrest was that the city, which had been very divided by social classes for years, became even more divided due to these class differences. After the unrest, our politicians didn’t take the necessary steps to make the changes that would allow the general population to live in complete harmony. Instead, they made empty promises out of fear of what was happening, but never followed through. The majority of the people who are the most disrespectful to others are those with more money. These wealthier individuals are the ones who have no sense of belonging to the country they live in, let alone the city they live in. They’re always talking about wanting to leave Chile or Santiago because they have the capital to do so, and therefore, they feel no sense of belonging. This is not the case with middle-class or lower-middle-class people, who are always greeting their neighbors and are proud of their roots and where they live.
    But this is typical of Chilean society and the city of Santiago. It doesn’t happen in other regions of Chile because people are more humble and live a quieter, more modest life than those in the city. I'm glad you’re coming to Chile and that you like our land. It’s unfortunate that there are people who invest time in scaring tourists by saying that this country is dangerous, when in fact, it has only a 3% crime rate at the Latin American level, making it one of the safest countries in all of Latin America. So, when you read someone saying that Chile is a dangerous country nowadays, it’s for the reasons I mentioned above. It always comes from people who claim to be patriots, who probably no longer live in Chile, and who never had the courage to enjoy the beautiful things the city has to offer because they always stayed in their own comfort zone and never ventured out of their own places.
    Cya soon..❤❤

    It's bizarre that you have an issue with the bathroom sink taps. Kitchen tap, bathroom tap; it's the same source of water. Is bathroom water not safe to drink in the USA? Does it come from a separate source that is infected with cholera or something?

    • @lifetheorycouple
      @lifetheorycouple  Před 2 měsíci +1

      We understand that the source of water is clean. And that is something to be very proud of... However, the issue we have is drinking that water from a public restroom. We don't know who was the last person to touch that facet or the last time it was cleaned. We don't know if whoever touched the bathroom sink space/facet/handle really used soap or not. We can only imagine there is a higher probability of being exposed to all types of bacteria in a public space... We would not drink from a bathroom facet unless we were truly desperate. We have not seen this behavior in any other country, even those with clean sources of water, we have lived or visited. --- So, in our opinion, it is bizarre/disgusting to fill up a bottle of water from a bathroom sink. --- On a more positive note, we did enjoy that there were some establishments with sinks, outside of bathrooms, with signs stating something like 'for drinking, not for washing hands' explicitly implying to fill up your bottles of water there. In those locations we happily filled up our bottles of water.

    Let me tell you something about Mote with huesillos, this is a typical drink for Chilean, IT'S NOT ONLY A DRINK it's a drink to help with your hunger as well when you are thirsty. It's very nutritious because the soft wheat is like a cereal and the dry peach is an addition to the flavor of the drink. Another thing about the people who goes to the public restroom to drink water, most of them are immigrants who lives in the streets of Santiago. Most of the people of Santiago buy drinking water.
    I lived in USA and saw homeless BATHE in public bathrooms, so it's not unique from Chile.
    We welcome a lot people, but most of the Chilean DO NOT LIKE THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, there is a lot chaos where they live and work.
    People of Santiago are not happy the way Santiago looks now. Santiago was a very orderly city, there was no people selling food on the street or so much chaos like today.
    If you can watch an old video of Santiago Chile for example in the 80s or 90s. you will see the difference.
    I'm sorry for writing with capital letters. I write this way because I want to highlighted what it's weird to you.

      Thank you for the view and comment!
      We didn't even expect Mote con Huesillos to be somewhat like a drink... I think as a dessert/refreshing treat, it's just too different. So, not for us. I can see how the mote contains nutritional value along with the peaches themselves. But that doesn't justify our dislike of the taste, the texture, and the mixture of the two things. But, I do encourage anyone visiting Chile to try it out to form their own opinion.
      Drinking from the bathroom facet... The people who were doing this and encouraging this were no homeless. One was a bar tender telling us to just go fill up the water bottle in the bathroom sink after we had ordered a bottle of water... One was a mother filling up water bottles for their children at San Cristobal. It was a hot day, I'll give them that... It just seemed normal in Santiago for people to do this... Which is great because the water must be that clean. We haven't seen this behavior in any other Latin American country.

    Así es, el mote con huesillo es asqueroso al igual que el pastel de choclo. Las personas son bastante mal educadas en general, no tienen un buen trato natural a los turistas. Normalmente sólo los reune las ideas de odio según sea el tema del día, puede ser por política, deporte o inmigración. Es verdad que no hay sentido de comunidad, no aprecian su ciudad, le dicen Santi-asco (Santi-disgust) y aborrecen que les critiquen aunque sean verdades porque no están dispuestos a cambiar aunque sea para mejor, somos como una tribu aborigen con tecnología.

      There are definitely differing opinions. We did not like Mote con Huesillo... But we did enjoy the Pastel de Choclo. --- People from Santiago do seem a little 'stand off-ish' and don't like to mingle with strangers... This felt different when we travelled to Vina Del Mar, Curico, and the Patagonia region. People were a bit more receptive in those parts outside of Santiago.

    I am surprised that you did not list "Chilean Spanish" as one of the negatives. It is hard to understand. Also, they tend not to like Colombians and it is worse if you are a woman. They think that we are shallow with lots of work done and are there to steal their man. I hated dealing with their beetchiness because they were jealous or something. I also hated being called La + my name.

      HA! - Chilean Spanish is off isn't it?!... Jonny felt like he was understood better because his Spanish doesn't always come out right... And since that seems to be kind of what Spanish sounds like at times in Chile, Jonny had an easier time communicating in Chile. While in Colombia, he has to really work out the pronunciation, otherwise people just don't understand. --- We were only here for a month and did not experience any of the cultural-discrimination you are mentioning.

      @@lifetheorycouple I guess you feel it more if you are working with them. We did not really understand their Spanish and had to look up the definitions online and my God, that sounded RUDE. We also found a lot of their words funny like fome, cachai, lo estás viendo as in are you working on that, etc. Maybe your experience as someone living short term is more positive and you were there with a gringo. We had colleagues from Valle del Cauca who lived there long term and they did experience some kind of discrimination, even if it is something like saying stuff in front of you like "Chile used to be safe until Colombians, Venezuelans and Haitians arrived". I had a very rude co-worker named Nicols, she really had it out for me for no reason and then I asked one of the other Colombians based in Chile what the heck was up with her and he said that she hated me because I am a Colombian woman :/

      Apologies if we offended. The water is clean, and that's great! We loved that there were dedicated drinking fountains specified for filling up bottles of water. They even had signs saying 'No lava manos...' However, we do find it disgusting to drink water from a public bathroom sink. --- On the bread piece, we did say, it's not a negative for many, but it is for us. We do eat bread from time to time, but it's something we don't consume daily but rather maybe once a week.

    Chileans are many times very clean people. The same cannot be said about some immigrants. I never did see in the many years I lived there a person using the bathroom, not washing their hands and then drinking from their hands but Chile has change a lot in the past ten years with the open door to immigration but it has been even more true in the past two years. The person you saw doing that was most like not Chilean.

      Apologies if we offended. Our point about drinking water isn't that the water is unclean... We just can't bring ourselves to drinking water from a public restroom sink... We'd have to be pretty desperate to do that. But, we did like that there were some water fountains throughout the city labeled for drinking and not washing hands. At those, we filled our water bottles up.
