    The problem is that netflix is spending 17B a year on content without much to show for it. is well know that netflix overblows budgets on bad shows, and then goes and cancels a good show after a few seasons.

      Thats cause the „bad shows“ actually bring in the money while the good ones often aren’t hyped enough. Squid game probably only got so hyped due to its overblown violence and not due to its deconstruction of capitalist society

    No, not price, but value. Spotify has music that can be replayed hundreds of times. TV shows are typically view once only. CZcams has new content every second. Netflix has only a handful of movies people want to actually watch/rewatch. Every consumer will eventually ask the same question, am I getting good value from this service?

    • @AbrahamSamma
      @AbrahamSamma Před 2 lety +10

      That is true to a certain extent. HOWEVER, I would advise Netflix to learn from Paramount when it made Star Trek TNG: focus on creating smart, tight series with a viciously loyal following that are rewatchable. These tend to cement subscribers like me (you may already guess what series make me stick to Netflix). Accumulate rewatchable, high quality shows like these and you're guaranteed atleast a defensible position in terms of subscribers. Films are great if they're high quality as well. They shouldn't just fund anyone's project. They should try to really vet projects based on merit and quality. That might also mean being a bit exclusive about what shows get to their platform.

    • @AbrahamSamma
      @AbrahamSamma Před 2 lety +6

      Plus, they really should try to focus on each genres equally and with a little more sensibility. I've noticed they tend to favor certain genres more than others, producing weird shows that no one can/should/would watch. They're unwatchable except during times of global outrage and ridicule. Those tend to peter out quickly. I am looking at you Goop. They really should stop that.

      @BarrySManifold Před 2 lety +3

      And it is also because of the competition. Amazon Prime, Disney, HBO Max are all competing to give their best offers.
      CZcams is actually bad: like removing the dislike button and shadowban for no clear reason. But nobody talks about it, because practically CZcams is a monopoly right now. Dailymotion doesn't have enough attention despite it's getting better.

    • @edselgreaves6503
      @edselgreaves6503 Před 2 lety +1

      Bad example because Spotify also loses more money on their service paying studios license fees to use the music on their service than they actually make from subscribers paying for it. In fact, podcasts make way more money for Spotify because a target demographic of people keep tuning in regularly as scheduled. The expenses they have to pay is minimal and almost anybody can join in and start one, not just Hollywood celebrities. Joe Rogan is king amongst podcasters on Spotify, that's why they haven't fired him but were okay saying goodbye to Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and whoever else said goodbye and yanked away their music catalog off from Spotify's platform.
      The reason why Spotify will always be around is because music streaming is usually held in balance by perfect competition. They all have the same basic music catalog, it doesnt really matter which one you choose because your favorite artists are going to have their albums on there, the popular radio songs are all going to be featured on each platform, almost all of them have the same price for the same subscription tier with the same benefits, the only thing that differentiates Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, is stuff like podcasts, playlists, hi fidelity lossless audio, etc. Just very small changes on individual platforms that can make or break your decision to choose which music subscription service to choose. Not like video subscriptions where the entire thing is vastly different, no one shares the same content, and you pay Hollywood huge amounts to make new exclusive content for your platform just to get you to stay loyal for another extra month

    The market needs something like a Spotify who literally only handle the hosting and apportion royalties without being a content creator.
    We've come full circle - Netflix singlehandedly killed video piracy, then everyone making copycat solutions blew subscription costs out of the water to the point where cable might be competitive again; it's fundamentally impossible to have a efficient market long term when every studio is running a separate service, and consolidation would not make things better overall. Nowadays piracy looks very good again because of just what a disaster the mess of expensive apps has become.

    • @ruthlim1285
      @ruthlim1285 Před 2 lety +13

      But I think Netflix is forced to be a content creator. They wanted to be like spotify and they did at first. Problem is unlike music who is produced by a very very big group of different people and companies, good movies and series are way way more expensive to produce and there are only few major players other than those many minors.
      It is because Disney want to have their own pie and stop supplying Netflix, same as HBO and etc. I think that is why Netflix felt threatened and started on making content themselves.
      Their price and tactics is getting a bit ridiculous yes and they keep wasting money on bad shows is right but because of how the industry structure differs from music, I doubt there can ever be a “spotify/apple music” in the streaming space. Because those giant with a lot of movies and series under their bag and copyright wants a share and don’t want to let a middleman earn. And if Netflix don’t try to make content, it will also get stale but yeap.

    • @Proton_Decay
      @Proton_Decay Před 2 lety +4

      @@ruthlim1285 Agreed.
      I think the only good end-game is a pay per view model.
      I'd gladly pay 15 cents an episode or something instead of subscriptions.
      Increase the granularity of user choice.
      Giant streaming companies managing huge catalogs meant to appeal to a broad audience at a fixed price is EXACTLY what made cable unattractive in the first place.

    • @ruthlim1285
      @ruthlim1285 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Proton_Decay I don’t think that will work out nor will the big companies be willing to offer that deal. For one, I don’t think Netflix can even do that because if their most popular series are bought like let’s say a kdrama, the cost is already there. And the cost to produce movies and drama are way way more then music which may work with a 15c per play. Not to mention quality content requires way more money.
      And also particularly for movies, renting is pretty much available at 4.98$ (in my country currency) which is essentially a period viewing model and I see that close to per view. They won’t want to drop that price anymore to something like 15c.
      And if you want something to view that is cheap then there is an option of CZcams. CZcams works cause it is not their expenses to make those content. And youtubers many are unable to survive on the money youtube paid. Most survive by the donations from their fans/sponsorship and ads they took on the side which is way more.
      There are costing involved and while I think a per view model may work but maybe not because I doubt they can drop down costing to something most people like.

    I still can't see how they plan on limiting password sharing? How can you limit this without putting too much pressure on the "honest" users? IP lock? Well what about when I'm on my way to work or on a holiday. Lock the specific devices? Well what if they break/get stolen,...
    The low-cost ad option might actually make sense, as long as they don't push ads onto the other levels. It will probably depend on what will be their revenue from ads if/when they go through with it.
    But the biggest problem is, in my opinion, the quality programming. Yes the Adam project, that was used as an example, was great, and there are definitely others, but there are so many really terrible ones.
    I'm probably going to catch some hate for this but whatever. There are many shows (or movies) which have/had the potential to be great, and often still did very well, but they could have performed so much better if the focus was on the quality of everything (show, story, characters,...) rather than their inclusivity. And sadly there were many really bad shows and movies which, in my opinion, were made just so that Netflix could showcase just how inclusive they are. And I'm not saying that inclusivity is bad, I don't care if a character has a certain skin colour or sexual orientation or whatever, but I do care when it's the only thing that defines their character or when it's a major change compared to source material...

I was so ofput by brigderton because in the opening scene there was already a sex scene it really doesn’t add value for me

    Somebody (not me) shares a subscription with 2 other people. This is because Netflix, in the age of 4K streaming, only offers 480p video quality on their basic plan meant for one person. So these 3 people got together, paid for the premium plan and now share the cost which works out cheaper than if all three had a basic plan. Netflix is unintentionally incentivising password-sharing by forcing people to pay more for low picture quality. If they offered 4K picture quality on their basic plan, somebody would've stuck on the basic plan.

    The difference between HBO Max and Netflix is that the former believes in scouting, cultivating and enhancing a couple of truly special pieces of content for their platform. Netflix on the other hand writes a check and throws everything at the wall and hopes things stick like Squid Games. Don’t fret if the second season doesn’t meet its goals but just inform the production team the show will not be renewed for a fourth season and give them a lot of advance notice to wrap all the show’s “loose ends” before or during the third season finale.

I guess if they get 10 million additional subscriptions from cracking down on password sharing that is still a huge positive for them.

    Netflix doesn't give you a yearly plan. They give you a monthly plan based upon your paying capabilities.
    Here in India the basic plan in which you can use Netflix on both computer and mobile is about 200 INR that yearly is about 2400, plus you need an internet connection which cost around 239 per month 2868 annually.
    On the other hand Disney+ in collaboration with hotstar gives a 499 annual plan which at first subscription also gives user the internet package for 1 month.
    To sum up the whole cost of annual Disney+ subscription with
    Yearly internet connection is 3367 INR . Whereas annual subscription of Netflix and yearly internet connection would cost you 5268 INR
    Given the current economyYou can't blame someone for opting for cheaper things.

    Give the people the best possible service, money comes after. I'm currently doing an MSc in investment and finance but I don't believe money should be the motivating factor behind decisions. Firstly, they should probably make all subscriptions tiers stream in 1080p at a minimum. Secondly, Netflix shouldn't compete for the time of the people, they're not youtube, instagram or tiktok. They should release a hit movie or two and shows a month, should be sufficient. I'd enjoy netflix more if I spend more quality time on it instead of just more time. I also hold a few shares of the company.

      Im always a bit surprised when i see comments like these on youtube, like do you really think the executives at netflix havent crunched the numbers to the core? Like what you said about 1080p streaming for everyone is a good theory but i could argue that it would reduce the incentive to upgrade to plus or premium. Your side of the argument may seem more compelling then mine but ultimately you would have to assume that a team of experienced executives have weighed all the variables most likely with the help of AI or advanced mathematics which exceed by far the logic of an individual currently studying investment and finance.

      @Account-wi9wd Před 2 lety

      @@michaelfordsham2715 Think of it this way. Competitions offers at least 720p as a standard. If you offer 480p either they use the plans that cost more (which is already at a much higher price than competition), or they switch to competitors. Let us bare in mind that you can easily find pirated copies of the movies/shows online at that low levels of quality for free. They probably have that plan there to psychologically make customers pay a little extra for a higher quality. But think of this, if this plan is so useless and pricey, they're missing out on a large number of price concious customers. They're already planning on having a ad-supported plan to target these types of customers, so clearly they want them. They aim to have a profit margin of 20%, but in the competitive environment that may not be possible. No need to offer poor products just to keep a certain margin which isn't even sustainable. Finally, the more people that watch netflix the more subscribers it attracts, both due to more revenues which lead to more production and due to networking effects (when people talk about shows in this case). But yeah, thats a few of my arguments. Just because people are in a certain position doesn't mean that have the best of ideas.

      @@Account-wi9wd 1st of all youre overestimating the availability of online free content as its full of ads, malware, youre fourced to keep the window open, websites keep on getting shut down and i really dont think people look at it as a viable option against netflix. Netflix at 480 has a such clear advantage over free online content that i beleive the amount of people that rely on free content that would be swayed to pay 10 bucks a months if netflix upgraded their viewing quality would be neglible. Secondly, to hone in on your point about rasing the standard subscription model to 1080, i understand your point of view , but for a company the size of a netflix it becomes a pure numbers game i.e. amount of new suscribers tempted by the higher quality vs the minimisation of the incentive to upgrade to more expensive streaming. With the amount of data and analytics at netflix's disposal i think they have the lead on you with this one. And thirdly when you mentioned the importance of prioritizng the brand and experience over profit margins or revenue maximisation in the original comment, i beleive its possible that this situation is different for 2 reasons. 1. There is a limit how much you can turn a streaming service into a brand when the product is clear and cut and hopefully value for money (as opposed to apple,tesla or nike for example) 2. maybe what you studied in school was a pointer for mainly starting and growing a business as opposed to mammoth company which reaches a point where it must simply crunch the numbers and fight competition

      @@michaelfordsham2715 I've read news articles today that support one of my suggestions which was to release higher budget movies/shows instead of releasing lower budget ones since they don't compete for the customer's time. We'll wait and see if Netflix soon upgrades to minimum quality to 720p or 1080p. Most likely the 720p option will be used for mobile-only customers since it is difficult to spot the difference between 720p and 1080p on smaller devices. Also, customers outside of developed nations are more price sensitive, so they would most likely prefer pirate websites if the quality if the same. The main market for growth is India but the consumers there are very proce sensitive which is why Netflix significantly lowered its prices there.
