    Haley Reinhart's version of "Creep" is not only the absolute best in the line up today, it's even better than the original.
    I mean, it didn't get 120 million views by accident. People watched if for a reason and the reason is, it is by far the best version ever done. Indeed, it didn't stay on the Billboard Jazz Chart for 68 straight weeks for no reason at all. It stayed because people know perfection when they hear it .
    All the other renditions pale badly in comparison to the Haley Reinhart cover of "Creep". Hell, even the original pales in comparison. It just can't get any better.

    PMJ and Haley all day, one mic, one take, on a day off. They take the song to an entirely different place while still respecting and representing the turmoil expressed in the original version. The slow sultry beginning and ending as a raging declaration of affirmation.
    I liked the Kina version as well.

    I can (and have) listened to Haley Reinhart’s with PMJ over and over and still love it and find fresh each time. The many other audience videos of the song, both with PMJ, her own band or various other bands I also really enjoy. I have tried to get my son to record his version of "Creep", It's amazing, but he isn't interested in doing it. He sang it one night at a Karaoke contest and he won. I may be biased because I'm his father, but he does have a full college scholarship in music because of his voice, the kid can sing. I may also be biased where Pau is concerned, but all bias aside, I love her version because it's simple and raw, just her amazing voice, and an old upright piano. With only that, she can project her emotions and touch people's souls.

      Along with music, he's also doing the political science route, which takes up a lot of his time. His team is leaving Wednesday to speak about a bill at the state legislature. We only see him now sometimes on long weekends, holidays, and school breaks. He knows how tough it is in the music industry so he's keeping his options open. Worst case scenario, music has paid for his college education. @@ashlenamusic

    I get chills every time I listen to this song, glad you liked it Ash!! Haaley is correct, she came in 3rd on American Idol 2010. Should have been 1st, but those shows are popularity contests. She did a great cover of Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love! She has at least a couple of albums she produced, LoFi Soul and Roll The Dice. I would love to hear Pau sing this again, now that her voice has matured, she has greater range and power now IMHO!!! Have a good one!😊⚡️

    • @vidpie
      @vidpie Před 8 měsíci +3

      Lo-Fi Soul was Haley's fourth full album. Roll The Dice is an EP. Both were independently prouduced by her and released through Reinhart Records.
      Haley's debut album "Listen Up!" was produced with Interscope.
      Her second, "Better," with her music publisher, Ole.
      Her third album, "What's That Sound?," with Concord Records.

    I love Both Haley's and Pau's renditions equally.
    One is the ultimate in traditional refinements elegantly rendered, the other pure raw emotional energy. You can guess which is which. These are both second to none. But any true artist on a given day can reach to their best on a song of this artistic merit
    Its that kind of classic
    Regarding musical frissons Angelina Jordan singing the outside version of Feeling Good hits me like an electric shock to the base of the spine when she lifts her head to the sky and climbs to the heavens and drops to paradise on earth vocally at yhe tender age of ten.

  • @andgar923
    @andgar923 Před 8 měsíci +19

    Obviously everyone can sing. It comes down to two factors: the composition and the ‘X’ factor.
    I tried to be as objective as possible. I feel that some were a showcase of their vocal abilities and that’s fine. Some very good compositions displayed, but I personally felt didn’t capture the song’s essence, which is isolation, depression, alienation etc
    At the end I felt that one artist grasped the meaning of the song best and became the WORDS and feelings of the song.
    This artist could’ve easily made a more complex version, but decided to make it about the song and not about them. Didn’t try to wow us with their vocal abilities and just laid it out for us to feel.
    Paulina Villarreal Vélez.

      You are spot on with your comment.

    • @DanKaschel
      @DanKaschel Před 2 měsíci

      I think this comment phrases the decision as inherently virtuous. Pau had little time and had no choice but to lead with raw emotion and simplicity. And she pulled that off well.
      Haley's version has infinitely more vocal nuance -- she's an amazing vocalist, but her rendition is also less charged and personal, giving her the space to introduce nuance. That's the trade-off.
      As for communicating meaning, I give the edge to Haley. Pau relayed the same meaning for the song that basically every cover has since the original. But Haley's interpretation was a poignant exploration of what it feels like to blame yourself for failing to please someone who fundamentally cannot be pleased -- to try to contort yourself into a shape they will accept. To me, that is a more interesting concept.
      I prefer Haley's version but feel a little put off by comparing two renditions that have so little in common. Pau's rendition wins overwhelmingly on spontaneity and raw emotion, neither of which were Haley's goals.

      Okay, you don't connect with Haley's version. However, I canna understand how you csn possibly call it "common". It is the least "common" of all the versions I have ever heard. Her voice is also unique, particularly in the range of vocal colours she shows.
      This version weems almost as if it was the original version song and /Radiohead and subsequent versions modern attempts at the song.
      Dislike it, fair enough. But "common"? Don't be ridiculous.

    • @DanKaschel
      @DanKaschel Před 2 měsíci

      If Haley's version felt common or played out, the lack is in your ear, not the rendition.
      Don't mean that as an insult. There are lots of styles I lack the ear for. But I promise there is a world of innovation and nuance in Haley's performance for lovers of that style.

    @OGK_Show Před 8 měsíci +2

    I’ve heard a number of covers and none of them can touch the original for me because they all focus on the vocal emotion of the song and lay it across a very different instrument layer. Yet for me it’s the combination of both from the original that sets the song on fire. All these emotional vocal performances are indeed fantastic, but they simply don’t connect with me like the original. For example, I’ve never heard a cover that attempts to parlay the energy of the electric guitar work of the original. The static crunch that precedes the chorus is so powerful. Then as it backs hits screaming with a sonic wave it ignites the emotion into a blast of energy that all the other vocal excellences fail to translate. Obviously, this feeling is not shared by the multitudes given the popularity of the many covers, but it’s why I fail to be moved by them, including Pau’s great performance. That’s cool for everyone. I just wanted to add my perspective when it comes to admiring the covers. Understand I think these are excellent covers and I understand why so many love them.

Tarkus, just like me, also wouild love to see you react to Eivor - Fallung free (Live at the Old Theatre in Torshavn) ! For a good reason ! We both know, that during this song, you will not only be speechless, but also get goosebump after goosebump after goosebump.... probably all over your body again. Jack Savoretti,, my other suggestion, will probably have the sane effect on you when you hear his voice for the first time.... I can tell you, the man does not look like he sings (just to give you an "appetizer") 🙂 Hooverphonic, my last suggestion, is a Belgian trip hop band who did a specially arranged concert in Amsterdam in 2912, with added orchestra. The whole concert is simply wondeful and the singer who was in that band during this time, Noemi Wolfs, has a beautfiul and unique voice. "Heartbroken" is one of my favourtie songs from that concert.
    PHEW.... that was a lot, again... thanks for reading (in advance) and thanks for this wonderful reaction video !
    See you soon, either here, or on patreon !
    'Best wishes from your fan Gerry

    Well, you know who I'd choose, right? Choosing from all these versions is like comparing sunsets. Or picking your favorite TW song - it's usually the most recent one. There is something to be said about going over the top with it, though. Technically the performance is great, but is it faithful to mood of the lyrics? Maybe not so much. Especially taking it into a dramatically different genre. A lot of covers suffer from that IMHO. I'm reminded of the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Simple Man". A lot of folks would say that Shinedown's cover is better than the original. And yes, I love Shinedown's song and think Brent Smith's vocal performance is amazing. But does it make sense in the context of the lyrics? Not exactly. As for getting the chills. Yes that happens to me with some performers. Floor Jansen of Nightwish gives me chills a lot.

      I actually think the style re-contextualizes the lyrics brilliantly. I hear it as the words of a woman in a relationship with a narcissist, contorting herself into whatever shape will please, never grasping they they can never be pleased.

    After reading some comments, I thought… who is Pau? Had to search and she is from The Warning and it hit me. I know many reactors are reacting to the Warning lately, but this is first song I have ever heard her sing so it makes sense to me now why people like her version better as they have developed an attachment to her previously which I get so much, but this being the first time I have ever heard her sing… nah. Guess I better go down the Warning rabbit hole and see what all the hype is about - always love discovering new music

    She wins by K.O., she is untouchable to convey émotions without overplay it. What did Pau is what must suit for the song (like The Warning always do for their own songs) itself and not thinking of showcase her own habilities (what all other singers didi with this song).

      The song WAS NOT written for a woman to perform. From a man's perspective, its about worthyness. From a woman's perspective it's about envy. Changes the entire meaning of the song. BUT, I think it's better when a woman sings it.

    Hey - Kathy here - just found your channel and so glad to see you doing this one. It is one of my favorites of Creep covers. But if you want to see another version, check out Brian Justin Crum, he was on America's Got Talent. When he finished, the audience didn't make a sound for 4 to 5 seconds after he finished, then the roof was blown off. I have seen all the ones you have mentioned, but you didn't mention Brian, but you have to see it. Stripped down and really amazing. And Haley, she was on American Idol. If you like her, you need to check out some of her other performances from that show, they were amazing. She came in 3rd, but I think she should have won! And for a fun fact, she was sick when she walked in to record this and said let's do this in one take, and they did. And yeah, she changed keys and took it up and blew out that ending! The End! LOL

    great reaction aslena. this female vintage interpretation and character embodiment of this classic is absolutely stunning.. just because she is a beautiful woman versus the presubscribed concept of stalker dude of the original by radiohead does not mean she can not be rejected by someone or society as a whole for being her true self and the imperfections that come with that. maybe she is obsessive, jealous or just does not fit the expected submissive girlfriend, wife, etc narrative of that time. all this creates an internal tug of war and debate within herself of what do i need to change for someone (or society) to accept or love her (i.e. be special) vs her loving herself for being authentic (i.e. remain a weirdo). although the specific circumstances are unique for each individual, we have all been there at some point and why so many people can relate to this song.
    however, the true masterpiece of the extraordinary performance is really just how well haley reinhart creatively taps all those mixed and conflicting emotions of the lyrics though her expansive and incredible vocals of soft breathiness, cries, belts, growls and scats strategically combined with her movements and facial expressions that creates this crazy push and pull effect that brings all those emotions out of us in both painful and satisfactory ways. her performance is an emotional roller coaster ride with postmodern jukebox providing the theme park underneath her. it's almost like she goes through the 12-steps of rejection and self acceptance in 4 minutes and 55 seconds. it is amazing and will go down as one of the best performances of our time.

In my opinion, neither can Haley and the part at 9:00 really removes any emotions and rather makes me wanna stick my fingers down my throat. Also, I'm not too fond of her hands on her body all the time. It does not give me the feeling that she wants a perfect body, but that she already thinks she has one. Maybe it's all because I hate all kinds of jazz music? 🤣🤣🤣

      @@TheUnderdogDe Those are all jazz type things you dislike about Haley performance, so I think you are right about why you dislike it. Jazz tends to compress everything and emotions are just one of them. On the other hand PMJ specializes in "jazzifying" songs , so on that basis they do a pretty good job. Floor would likely "floorify" it , I think so wouldn't aim in the same emotional direction. Having said that , Floor grew up actually feeling like the freak, when she was a kid and a teenager, so may bring more than you think.

    New to the channel, and very much enjoying your reactions. I'd kind of been looking for someone to do a comparison of Creep covers, particularly with Pau and Haley/PMJ, so thank you for this. I think covers con go two ways: an attempt to copy the original, or an attempt to make your own. Pau and Haley definitely make it their own, such that you can listen to the original followed by the cover and not feel like you have the same song on repeat. Haley now "owns" this song, like Joe Cocker took ownership of With A Little Help From My Friends from The Beatles following his performance at Woodstock. I've seen her in concert; she closes the show with it and just brings the house down. Radiohead has the angsty teen version, Pau has the "rip your heart out" version, and Haley has the adult version, and all three are greatness.

Haley has always been a vocal genius, but she's coming at this as a pro with a pro arrangement... while Pau is coming at it from the vantage point of being a fan of the song who learned and performed it in 3 hours live on her phone stream... totally different, and Pau wins for emotion to me... gut wrenching.... but Haley as a professional performance wins from that perspective...
