- The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-23; NATO reporting name: Flogger) is a variable-geometry fighter aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau in the Soviet Union. It is considered to belong to the Soviet third-generation jet fighter category, along with similarly aged Soviet fighters such as the MiG-25 "Foxbat". It was the first attempt by the Soviet Union to design look-down/shoot-down radar and one of the first to be armed with beyond visual range missiles. Production started in 1970 and reached large numbers with over 5,000 aircraft built. Today the MiG-23 remains in limited service with some export customers.
The basic design was also used as the basis for the Mikoyan MiG-27, a dedicated ground-attack variant. Among many minor changes, the MiG-27 replaced the MiG-23's nose-mounted radar system with an optical panel holding a laser designator and a TV camera.

In Serbian aerotechnical institute, Moma Stanojlovic, we had several IRAQI MIG 21's and one MIG 23's on maitanance.
After invasion on Iraq they stayed in institute on sun, rain and snow for 15 years... after all that time, when we crancked them up, they all started as only one day pased from maitanance.
We had western tech also, and by our statistics, western helicopters had 3 time more failures than Russian... this is unbiased info, i am nither Russian nither NATO guy.
Fck yeah... Soviet stuff was made to laaaast a loooong time... probably one of the reason why they collapsed... the stuff they made was too high quality meaning less sales because you only buy 1 of something and no need to change for a few decades xD

The best thing about MiG-27 is that massive GSh-6-30 a 30 mm 6 barrel gas operated gatling cannon, its as powerful as the A-10 GAU-8

I read a lot of comments and I find this distressing. Funny but every time i heard of the MiG-23 it's always occidental peoples who tell us their opinions or somes "facts" based on American way of thinking. They always compare the Mig-23 (Third generation) with the fourth generation American aircrafts. Sorry guys but it's a serious mistake. It's like comparing the MIG-29 with the F-4 and thinking they are in the same fighter generation. The F-4 will always looks like a shit. It's what we doing with the Mig-23. In the reality you have to compare the Mig-23 with the F-4/F-104S/Saab Viggen/ Mirage F-1/ IAI Kfir/ F-5. In front of these planes he dosen't have to be ashamed, truly not. I studied the MIG-23 and his combat records and it was a lot more competent fighter jet than what the" Occidental specialists" tell us. Funny... How a military superpower can waste is time and is money building 5000 absolutely useless and worst jet ever ? It's the same thing with the MIG-21 (Second generation) vs the F-4 (Third gerenation). With this point of view, when you see the kill ratio of the Migs, they dosen't have to be ashamed. I would say they did well. Really. A good example of a fair combat is the Angola/South Africa war. The Angola/Cuban MIG-23 crushed the SAF Mirage F-1 even in dogfight.
Try to find a good Soviet MIG-23MLD pilot and ask him what he think of the MiG-23. Believe me the story will be a lot more different.

The Mig 23 flown by Syrians shot down both the F15 and the F16 in a2a combat. Also a Soviet Mig 23 shot down a Pakistani F16.
You dont have clue boy yes is true that Mig -23 was 3 gen jets but he is not air superority aircraft you can compare mig -23 and F-16 Mig 23 is actually bild for dual purporse ass high alltitude interceptors in earla 1970 and also high speed for bombing mission in enemy territory later ass interceptor was replaced by Mig 25 And Mig 31 so in fight with F-16 only advadntage for Mig 23 would his speed in high attitude but in close air combat it would be difficult to overmanerve F-16 . This wrote pilot of Mig 21 and Mig 29. I guess now something about Migs

The Mig 23 is very beautiful industrial design, its so sleak and long.
Mig-23 was a good and underrated aircraft. They had defeated F-16s but were outclassed by F-15, though not completely helpless. They had a 5:1 numerical advantage against F-15s however.

Very beautiful aircraft! Bulgarian air force also used a lot of Mig 23 planes, but they were retired in 2007.
Ye and now we wanna buy 35 year old f16's instead of the gripen..
Almost all eastern bloc countries had very big armies due to conscription and had incredible amounts of military equipment. Bulgarian army size was 300000, now its 30000. All the funding came from the USSR, but when that collapsed no country was able to maintain its ginormous armies. So a lot of shit was retired and put into storage. For example, Bulgaria has 2000+ tanks in storage and only uses about 250 of those.

Good work Matsimus but I think you forgot to mention Cuba in the video, During the 80s and 90s Cuba received different versions of this aircraft and even some of them saw combat during the Angola vs South Africa.
Here is one of the engagements between the Mig-23 and the Mirage F1:
On September 27, 1987, Cuban Major Alberto Ley Rivas and Lieutenant Chao Gondin in MiG-23MLs engaged two Mirage F-1CZs of the Sout African Air Force’s 3rd Squadron and fired three R-60 (“AA-8 Aphid” IR-homing) missiles. According to them, one F-1CZ exploded upon impact by an R-60 and crashed in enemy territory, and the other retired to Namibia after being struck by a second missile. This aircraft lost its drag chute and sustained serious damage to its hydraulics. When the pilot, Captain Arthur Piercy, landed at his base at Rundu, Namibia, he ran off the end of the runway, over a ditch, and struck a rock which scraped off the landing gear and caused the ejection seat to fire. Unfortunately, the parachute did not deploy before Captain Piercy hit the ground and his back was broken. He survived but was medically retired from the SAAF. The aircraft was cannibalized for parts to keep #205 flying. Major Rivas was awarded 1.5 victories for this action, and Lt. Gondin a half kill. This event is well-known in Cuba and confirmed by the Russians and Angolans, but not by the South Africans. According to them, the pilot of the second Mirage, Commander Carlo Gagiano, fired a Matra 550 IR missile at the MiGs (without result) and, after the action, escorted Piercy to Rundu where he (at least) landed safely.

@@designbam780 The USAF can be surprisingly vindictive when it comes to enemy kills against US planes, even going so far as attributing losses to friendly fire, ground fire or 'technical problems' just to deny the enemy air force a kill.
It took them 10 years to admit that Scott Speicher was downed by an Iraqi Mig-25 instead of 'a SAM' and they still claim the loss of a Pakistani F-16 in the Afghan War was due to friendly fire instead of Soviet Mig-23s. And lets not forget the ridiculous numbers in the Korean war where the USAF continues to insist that only 78 Sabres were shot down despite strangely also listing over 200 Sabre pilots as KIA.
@@fludblud yeah, the Korean war was major statistical bullshit where the Americans think it was a total American supremacy despite the war turning out to be a stalemate and in the air mig-15 was slightly superior to the f-86 in alot of ways. It was really the less experienced North Korean pilots that let down the mig-15 a bit.
@@augustsinyukov8497 Yeah, ultimately the Sabre's saving grace was its radar assisted gunsight which gave less experienced pilots an important advantage in achieving the Sabre's generally accepted 5:1 kill ratio (unlike the bullshit 10:1 claim of the USAF). However in the hands of experienced pilots, the MiG-15's better speed, agility and weaponry were clearly evident as all the top scoring aces in the war were Russian pilots.
@@fludblud The actual 86 vs 15 ratio is about 2:1 in favor of the 86. However when the 15 was flown by Soviets (and not North Koreans) then the ratio was closer to 1:1. Google RAND corporation F86 v Mig 15.
Please do note the 15s primary role was to shoot down bombers and not to engage 86s.

MiG-27 also had a Gatling gun instead of GSh-23. You can actually see it in this video at a moment.
MiG-23 is also famous for that incident when the pilot had technical issues, thought the plane was going to crash and ejected. But the plane didn't crash, it leveled up and kept flying, eventually entering air space controlled by NATO. Needless to say it caused alarm... At one point it was intercepted and the interceptor pilots reported that there was no canopy and seat, meaning the pilot ejected. In the end, it ran out of fuel and crashed in Belgium.
MiG-23 is often considered as one of the worst fighter planes made in USSR. It didn't have amazing service record. There were some unconfirmed reports that Indian Flogger has shot down a Pakistani F-16A using middle range missile, but - unconfirmed. Still, interesting part of aviation history.
I do hope one day some company comes out with a radio control Mig 23 / 27 scale model for radio control enthusiast. I love this jet so much it is one of my most favorite of all the Russian Jets.

I think a sketch is a must when you try to describe mechanical design.
It should be noted that the wing sweep system used by the MiG-23 was in many ways a Soviet development building off Shukoi’s success with the Su-22, an excellent attack aircraft in its own right derived from the Su-7. Interestingly, the sweep system was simpler than Western equivalents, being manually operated and only having three sweep angles, with 45 deg. being the intermediate position that was the primary flight mode (the minimum sweep setting was used for take off and the max for high speed attacks). This “simple” system could sometimes make the aircraft difficult to control, and MiG-23’s also suffered from problems wherein the bearings in the sweep system’s wing pivots would lock up after high g maneuvers. This caused *alot* of crashes early in the MiG-23’s career and this and it’s lower maneuverability made it unpopular amoung pilots.
The MiG-23 came out of the same school of thought as the early F-4 Phantom’s, the thought that long range missiles were going to replace dogfighting and future fights would be decided by who could reach altitude quick enough and vector well enough to get off the first shots. That wasn’t wrong in the grand scheme of things but the tech of the 60/70’s just wasn’t there yet. I’ve always said that the MiG-23 was an F-4 done right, because it had a gun from the get go and whilst it lacked maneuverability it was far smaller and cheaper than the F-4.
If people want to play with this plane, the Strike Fighters IOS game is highly recommended it’s not super accurate but it is great fun.
The intakes of the MIG-23 are an exact copy of the F-4 Phantoms that were reverse engineered from one the Soviets obtained.

This is my all time Favorite Jet Fighter it's Beautiful and Brut at the same time. Has an impressive weapons load can carry 10 missiles for Dogfighting, 8 Short Range Missiles and 2 Medium or Long Range Missiles and a Duel Barrel 23mm cannon. has not a spectacular combat record 25 kills to 102 downed in air to air combat. Had 4 Die-cast Mi-23 Flogger Dynaflites when I was a kid. These has moving wings which was cool for such a small plane.dont have any of them now and haven't found any since 1985. Gonna keep looking though and add it to my fighter collecting when I do finally find one.
Great video, a lot of information in a short amount of time. If the Mats-universe wants to know more, check out "Red Eagles" and "America's Secret Mig Squadron" both about the Constant Peg program. MiG's were acquired by the US and allies from defections and grey market transactions, and were studied in depth. The take-away from the MiG-23 was that it could go fast, but was dangerously unstable while doing so. One of the Constant Peg pilots was killed by a Mig-23 while test flying it, and a number of pilots noted how squirrely the plane could get at high speeds.
Note that the aircraft that was "tested" was a downgraded version of what the Soviets flew.
the Indian Air Force operated a fleet of 183 brand new MIG-27 ML multi role ground attack fighter from 1986 - 2015 . . . the last MIG-27 ML multi role ground attack fighter was retired in 2016 . . . in 1989 around 168 of the 183 MIG-27 ML multi role ground attack fighter were upgraded to MIG-27H (Block 2) multi role ground attack fighter standard . . . it was an indigenous upgrade, mostly new avionics that included partial glass cockpit MFD & MDPs, combined but secure GPS/GLONASS anti-jamming communication, HUD & new EW suite . . .

MiG-23, Flogger G was a fighter version. It had a major issue with its Gsh 30mm cannon. MiG27, Flogger J was the export close air support version. brasscat
Mig 27s were deployed alongside IAI Kfires in Sri Lankan airforce during the war. It's funny these fighters were enemies a decade before.

If they just had a great engine, this airframe really had so much potential. We would have seen them in active service to this day. I feel the same for the Mig 29 airframe. These Russian designs were so great.

Yeah cost is a huge factor cause when you cheap out and cute coasts you get a crummy and dangerous plane that kills pilots and sucks in a fight like this trash. The one kill in the entire history of this jet was a screw up shoot down of a civilian airliner while dozens of mig23 and 27 have been shot out of the sky. These where pilot killing trash!

Well, the Flogger was one that followed the 1970'ies fashion with swing wing.
As allways the main problem was the engines and the ability to tolerate high turbine inlet temperatures.
materials technology improved the ability with directionally solidified turbine blades.
Generally the russian compressors were quite good, but the hot end of the engine had a very limited life.
The only really successfull swing wing was actually the Tornado - and that was because Rolls-Royce made the RB199 engine with three spools. It will indeed take an insane englishman to even contemplate such a contraption - and even put it into production.
So far as I understand it: The problem is not twin-spooled engines where the fan axel actually pass through the inner spool; but how the devil do you manage the middle spool and rebalance the damned thing after major overhaul?
I think the answer lies: The Amnesiac Association was asked how they managed to remember their meetings and other appointments? The answer was:

The russian An-72 Coaler has a similar arrangement (if that is the right word?). Now all engines use oil and loose lubricant in the labyrinth seals between the spools, but where Coalers are concerned their ready position on the apron is marked by two very large white circles - which is a rather crude way of making the pilot aware that the aeroplane is pissing lubricants like a drunken sailor in a pub lavatory.
That is basically ignoring the problem all together and hope the damned thing won't weld itself solid in the air.
The other way around it is done i the civilian Trent where the engine is derated so it will not have to undergo maintainance so often. It has a Time Between Overhaul that is about 4 times longer than the F117 (PW2000). The answer to: How do you maintain it? Don't!!!
But the Tonka? I really don't know.
What about the F-14 Tomcat it’s a superb Naval Fighter Jet and it’s swing wing. Also I thought the F-117 was powered by the F-404 non afterburning engine you know the variant of the Hornet engine.
The tornado was the most successful swing wing, NOT. No air to air kills ever and it famous as flying joke from 91 cause the Brits lost a bunch when there arrogant stupidity back fired flying though ww1 tech Anti aircraft ARTILLERY at tree top level cause the Brits though that was a smart idea in treeless desert, not. RAF used to be huge arrogent SOBs about all the time they spent training low lever map of the earth, till it proved to be a terrible idea in the gulf war and the RAF tornados all got blasted by every Iraqi yahoo shooting his ak up In the air. Thing was so small and over loaded it had no range unless you strapped huge drop tanks on that killed the preformnce and used up most of the few hard points. F14 hands down best swept wing and likely best interceptor ever. Range out the wazoo, way more payload then tornado, the only fully automated variable geometry wing and hell unlike any of the others say for the f111 it was carrier capable.
logicbomb007 Remember that initially F-111, the MiG-23 counterpart at the time of the development was meant to be a fighter, but Americans failed in making it into a fighter as it turned out to be too heavy. They did turn it into a bomber, which was a good step.,
Swing wing is feature of 3d generation jets. French Mirage F1 has the same feature.

The most funny aspect about the MiG-23 designation is how many times it was recycled in the Western press: First it was assumed that the arrow-winged Experimental E-2A would be built as the MiG-21, and the Arrow-winged E-5 as the MiG-23. Then, as it became obvious that only the delta-wing type would enter production, the MiG-23 was used for the Experimental E-152 "Super MiG", and later it was assumed that another MiG Prototype, the E-8 (bearing some resemblance to the Eurofighter Typhoon) would be accepted as the MiG-23. That the "Foxbat" was initially called the MiG-23 just completes the picture.
Cuba/Angola flew MiG-23’s and MiG-21’s against South Africa during the border war. They certainly were better aircraft than the aging Mirage F1’s/III’s that we had due to Apartheid sanctions, better aircraft couldn’t be bought (like F-16’s). Although the MiG pilots were no match for the pilots South Africa had.

You forget to mention that Mig-27 was the first Soviet aircraft that had Gsh-6-23 minigun which was an total failure in the beginning of its test. It caused a catastrophic failures in flight during firing its six barrel cannon which leads to sudden lost of air speed, damages of some electronic and hydraulics due to its recoil and incredible rate of fire. In some test of this canon one plane has lost its canopy in flight after conducting a short burst fire. The only reducing the rate of fire har resolves those problems but the main idea of standard high rate of fire of that canon then was under a question!
The gsh 6-23 was a lot more manageable as compared to the Gsh 6-30 which did cause the damage

Fun fact:
The MIG-27 had the infamous overpowered GSh-630 (6 barrel, 30 mm). The vibration of the gun caused all kinds of problems, electronics failing, cracks in the fuselage, and so on. The MIG-23 fuselage was simply not strong enough for that monster of a cannon.
But it found its true place (with water cooling) in the AK-630 and Kashtan CIWS systems, that some guy called

I still believe the YE-8 would have been a better platform.. much more maneuverable similar powerful engine. It had one accident that caused it to be cancelled..
They were dangerous to their pilots because of their ejection seats, had zero radiation shielding from their radars (leading to a lot of cancer), had poor missiles but was fast as hell and could disengage from a fight at will. The Russians could pound them out and export them to everyone. Quantity however does not win in the air. Now... on the ground.... heh heh heh....
Regarding the ejection seat, most fighters of that era had the same issue - Look at the F-4 Phantom where pilots would joke that you would "meet your maker in a martin-baker."
Despite ALL this issues.... I'd love to fly a high fidelity sim of it in DCS. : D

They were:
1) definitely not dangerous to fly
2) definitely not trash in a fight
3) they had no issues with ejection seats
4) it was DEFINITELY not under-powered
And that comes from pilots who actually trained on them and flew them. MiG-23 was well loved. So stop trying to make stuff up.

Pretty sure east german didn't have the MiG-27 but rather the MiG-23BN fighter bomber. One of the main differences is that the MiG-23BN still had the GSH-23 while the MiG-27 had the GSH-6-30

Mig 23 for its time was a powerful plane it can accelerate very fast in a short time with a engine making 28,600lb thurst
But in the right hands it is possible to get it to accelerate fast in a short time

You didn't include the mid-1980s most avanced model that can give a modern fourth gen fighter a run for its money.
The Soviet Union had a number of fighter aircraft that were radar equipped and more sophisticated, they just did not export them. They were never in the frontal aviation (FA) , or marine aviation (AV-MF), but in the air defense organization (PVO). Mostly from Sukhoi. SU-9, Su-11, and Su-15. 9 and 11 look like the MIG-21 with a bubble canopy, but they are much larger and twin engine. The Yakolev Yak-28P was a converted bomber with a big radar in the nose. The Tupelev Tu-128P was a failed bomber design converted into a long range interceptor for protecting Siberia from US bombers. The Tu-128P was armed with the monster sized R-4 missiles (NATO callsign: AA-5 "Ash"). I'd love to see a video on the Tu-128P.

in my regard, those are the best 3rd gen aircraft in the world, they eated Atlas Cheetah' (south afrikan "Kfir", or improved Mirage III) for breakfast during Angolan conflict.
Now the updated versions remain capable legacy aircraft even for upcoming next, 3rd decade of XXI century

And an effective aircraft at that, not designed for dogfights but rather for firing a missile and immediately speed back to friendly territory

Early mig-23s were problematic but Mig-23ML and up were amazing aircraft. East German pilots preferred them over the F-4Fs.

The only problem with the mig-23 was it's BVR weapons system. The r-23/24 missile(s) were crap. They couldn't turn very well. They couldn't hit an aircraft maneuvering at over 5g. It also was NOT very good in a dogfight . It was however, very good at retreating. It also had great thrust and acceleration. The MLD version had dog tooth cutouts on the inner wings. These supposedly created vortex for each wing which helped with agility.
Bigest problem of MiG-23 was early version MS that had basicaly MiG-21 avionics. No BVR missiles and crapy radar. And those are the ones that saw most combat. Proper ones with R-23/24 came later with decent radar and also IRST.
MS was not an early version, it was a 3rd world export version. It is the one that saw combat in Syria (they bought those, thinking that it's a great deal for the money) - but then they realized how mistaken they were, and immediately started requesting the latest ML variant - which in fact had avionics superior to the F-16A.
The terrible track record of the MIG-23 comes from the undereverythinged -23MS in Syria, and of course "ignoring what is bad for you". Other variants did well in Iran and Angola, including the downing of 2 Iranian F-14A Tomcats and in Afghanistan a Pakistani F-16A.

Yeah, although, I am not sure on whether they purchased their ML's after the war - or during. They started with MS's though, which are frankly trash.
ML production started in '78, MLD in '82.
Syria received MS '73-'75, MF from '78, MLD probably '84-'85. And some UM trainer and BM ground attack versions.
In '74 an MS variant shot down 2 F-4's with 3 missiles during a mission that was meant to be a weapon test, and was about to engage a 3rd with cannon when he was shot down by friendly SAM fire. Eh.

My old Army buddy bought one, less than 2 weeks ago I had my picture taken sitting in the cockpit of it, here's the ironic thing, in the mid 80's him and I were Air Defense gunners (Vulcan) in the Army and back then never in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I'd be sitting in the cockpit of one having my picture taken.

MIG 23 is in the same class as Phantom. Of course it's not a match for F 16.
