There are so many types of coffee served in Portuguese coffee shops, that even natives get confused sometimes, let alone foreigners.
In this video, we will demystify the whole thing. Mr Jorge, who has worked in the sector for over 40 years, is going to help us understand what are the types of coffee served in Portugal and how strong each one is.

I have listened to this three times so far as we will be in the north for a month soon. Thank goodness for slow playback to help me pronounce what we will try and order :). What is a macchiato called and can I shorten descafeinado to decaf some how or just learn the whole word? It sounded like he was saying descaf?…. Obrigada, this is super helpful☕️☕️👏
Macchiato in Portuguese is café pingado. And I’m afraid we say the who word for decaf: descafeinado.
So phonetically you will ask for: ca-FEH peen’GAH-doo d’sh-ca-fay-NAH-doo 😁

And it’s fine to have the whole word, this way I get more courage to have to say the whole order 🫣💪. I thought macchiato was pingado but wasn’t sure so thank you for setting me straight! Hi Carla, I’m learning Portuguese and am a native Spanish speaker. I find it easier to understand some speakers and others I’m just lost. I very much understand both of you on this video and was wondering if you could share which region you the gentlemen are. I’m curious if I am finding certain regions to understand easier. Thanks.
Olá, N Maiso 👋🏽 I’m not sure where sr. Jorge is from but I’d say he’s from the Grande Lisboa area and so am I. That’s probably the accent you’ve been exposed to before and therefore easier for you to understand 👍🏽 Also, it’s not just about the accent but how clearly some people pronounce their words and obviously the speed in which they speak will also make a difference.

Desculpe, com base no que eu disse no vídeo, pode parecer que o garoto escuro seja a mesma coisa que o pingado, mas na realidade o pingado tem sempre mais café do que o garoto, porque o garoto é uma bebida mais fraca, por isso tem sempre mais leite do que café - se for escuro é porque simplesmente tem mais quantidade de café do que um garoto normal (ou um garoto claro) 👌🏽

Can you please let me know what a straight black cup of coffee is called? Is it bica/expresso?
Yes for the Portuguese Bica/expresso is the normal black cup of coffee, but that’s the small cup - very strong. But in case for you a normal straight black cup of coffee is something bigger and a little more diluted, then make sure to ask for the abatanado or abatanado cheio 👍🏽
Super so I'll be having a garoto duplo with just a little more leche than a dash! so how do I correctly order that!
😊 in the video sr. Jorge tried to correct himself when he spoke about the “garoto” coffee - it’s mainly milk with a drop of coffee. “Café pingado” is the one where you have a normal coffee and then a dash of milk is added.
If you want a decent amount of coffee and more than just a dash of milk I’m thinking you should try order a dark “meia de leite”. Order it this way: uma meia de leite escura, por favor.
This way you’ll get a bigger cup than the espresso one, a good amount of coffee with a decent amount of milk 😀

Posso fazer uma pergunta? O Sr Jorge disse (7:58) "onde a gente faz". Já deparei-me com esta forma significando "we" mas na forma singular, portanto "where we make..". A minha pergunta é porquê? Alguém podia explicar-me por que razão não diz apenas "nós fazemos"? Daria uma nuanca diferente? Muito obrigada.
“A gente” (com o artigo!) é uma variação corrente (ou familiar) do pronome “nós”, ambos têm o mesmo significado. Embora, por vezes e não tão commumente, “a gente” possa ser usado para nos referirmos a um grupo de pessoas (um povo) que não nos inclui, ou seja, em inglês podemos traduzir “a gente” como “the people” - portanto, deve prestar atenção ao contexto 👍🏽

O café americano não existe nos cafés portugueses, só abatanado.
@@evacookie913 É bom que os proprietários de cafés não pensem da mesma forma que você. Encomendei um Americano em 20 cafés diferentes e fui servido e ninguém hesitou por um momento.
